How long does it take for unemployment to start - Washington ESD timeline questions
I just filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes before you actually start receiving payments? I know I have to file weekly claims but I'm not sure when the money actually hits your account. My last job ended about 10 days ago and I'm starting to stress about bills. Anyone know what the usual timeline is from filing to first payment?

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim to receive your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim. You'll need to file your weekly claims during this waiting period even though you won't get paid for the first week (that's the waiting week).

•Thanks! So even though I don't get paid for the first week, I still need to file that weekly claim?

Alexander Evans
•Yes exactly, you have to file every week or you could lose benefits for those weeks. The waiting week just means you don't get paid for it.

depends if your claim goes into adjudication or not. mine took 6 weeks because they had to verify my employment history

•How do you know if your claim is in adjudication? Is there somewhere on the website that shows this?

Evelyn Martinez
•yeah it will show up in your account status. mine said 'adjudication in progress' for weeks

I had issues reaching Washington ESD when my claim was delayed and found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It was worth it for me to get answers instead of calling hundreds of times. The peace of mind was huge when I was worried about my claim status.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that before. Might be worth looking into if I can't get through myself.

The standard timeline is 21 days for your first payment if everything processes smoothly. Here's what happens: Week 1 is your waiting week (unpaid), Week 2-3 your claim processes, and by Week 3-4 you should see your first payment. However, if Washington ESD needs to verify your work history, income, or reason for separation, it can take much longer.

•This is really helpful, thank you! Is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

•Make sure all your information is accurate when you file weekly claims, respond quickly to any requests for information, and keep filing your weekly claims even during delays.

WASHINGTON ESD IS SO SLOW! I waited 2 months for my first payment because they "lost" my paperwork. The whole system is broken.

Alexander Evans
•That's frustrating but not typical. Most claims process within the standard timeframe unless there are complications.

•Maybe not typical but it happens way too often. I know three other people who had similar delays.

•I think it depends on your situation. Mine went through in exactly 3 weeks like they said it would.

make sure you're doing your job search requirements too. if you dont log your job searches in WorkSource WA they can delay or deny your benefits

Ruby Garcia
•Oh I didn't know about job search requirements. How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Lucy Taylor
•You need to complete 3 job search activities per week and log them in WorkSourceWA. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, or networking activities.

I'm in a similar situation - filed 8 days ago and getting anxious about when payments start. Good to know it's normal to wait a few weeks.

•Hang in there, the waiting is the hardest part. As long as you keep filing your weekly claims you should be fine.

•Thanks, I'll try to be patient. Bills don't wait though!

Another question - do they direct deposit the payments or send checks? I set up direct deposit when I filed but want to make sure.

Lucy Taylor
•If you set up direct deposit it usually takes 1-2 business days to hit your account. Paper checks take longer, about a week by mail.

•Perfect, thanks for all the info everyone. Feeling much better about the timeline now.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned - I used it when I couldn't get through to check on my adjudication status. Really helped me understand what was happening with my claim instead of just waiting and wondering.

•Did they actually help resolve the issue or just help you get information?

Benjamin Carter
•They helped me talk to an agent who explained exactly what documents I needed to submit. Without that call I would have been waiting much longer.

Pro tip: check your account online every few days to see if there are any action items or requests for information. Sometimes Washington ESD needs additional docs and if you miss it, your claim gets delayed.

•Good point, I'll make sure to check regularly. Is there a mobile app or do I need to use the website?

•Just the website as far as I know. Log into your SecureAccess Washington account to check your unemployment claim status.

I remember being so stressed about this same thing. The uncertainty is awful when you're counting on that money. But most people do get their first payment within a month of filing.

Ruby Garcia
•Yeah the uncertainty is the worst part. Glad to hear most people get it within a month.

Katherine Ziminski
•Exactly. Once the payments start they're usually pretty regular, it's just that initial wait that's tough.

One thing to watch out for - if you worked in multiple states or for federal government, it can complicate things and take longer to process your claim.

Ruby Garcia
•I only worked in Washington so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

Noah Irving
•You should be fine then. Straightforward in-state claims usually process faster.

Also make sure you understand the difference between your benefit year and your weekly benefit amount. Your benefit year is how long you can collect (usually 26 weeks) and your weekly amount depends on your past wages.

Ruby Garcia
•How do I find out what my weekly benefit amount will be?
0 coins
Vanessa Chang
•It should show in your account once your claim is processed. It's based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period.

•Thanks for the reassurance! It really does help to hear from people who've been through it.

Important: don't forget that you can't just sit around waiting. You need to be actively looking for work and available for work to keep getting benefits. Washington ESD checks up on this.

Ruby Garcia
•Yeah I'm definitely job searching. Just trying to understand the timeline for the benefits while I look.

Julian Paolo
•Good approach. The benefits are there to help while you find new work, not replace working entirely.

I had a friend who used some service to help call Washington ESD when her claim was taking forever. Think it was called Claimyr or something? She said it was a lifesaver when she couldn't get through on her own.

•Yeah someone mentioned that earlier in the thread. Might be worth considering if you get stuck.

•Right, I should have read more carefully! But yeah, she had good results with it.

The key thing is to be patient but also proactive. File your weekly claims on time, respond to any requests quickly, and check your account regularly. Most people get their first payment right when expected.

•This whole thread has been super helpful. I feel much more prepared now for what to expect.

•Glad it helped! The unemployment process can be confusing but it works for most people once you understand the timeline.

One last tip - if you do run into issues or delays, don't panic. There are resources available to help you get through to Washington ESD and resolve problems. The waiting is stressful but most claims do get resolved.

Ruby Garcia
•Thank you! I'll keep that in mind if I run into any problems.

Just want to echo what others said about Claimyr - when I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get answers, using their service to connect with an agent was really worth it. Sometimes you need that direct contact to move things along.

•Good to know there are options if I get stuck. Hopefully I won't need it but it's reassuring to know it's there.
