How long till Washington ESD unemployment pays you after filing?

Just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Thursday and I'm wondering how long till unemployment pays you? I've never been through this process before and I'm stressing about when I'll actually see money in my account. I know I have to file weekly claims but when does the first payment actually come? My bills are due next week and I'm getting really anxious about the timing.

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim to when you get your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim. You have to complete your weekly claims every week too.

Do you know if weekends count toward that timeline? I filed on Thursday so I'm trying to figure out exactly when to expect something.

0 coins

Business days only. So if you filed Thursday, count from Friday as day 1. Also make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time or it will delay everything.

0 coins

In my experience it was closer to 4 weeks before I saw any money. Washington ESD has been really slow lately and there's always some kind of adjudication or verification they need to do first.

0 coins

4 weeks?? That's way longer than I was expecting. Did you have any issues with your claim or was that just normal processing time?

0 coins

Normal processing time unfortunately. They had to verify my employment history which took forever.

0 coins

Same here - took about a month before my first payment showed up. The waiting is brutal when you have bills to pay.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent within minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than calling the regular number and getting hung up on constantly.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Is it legit or just another scam? I'm always suspicious of services that charge for government stuff.

0 coins

It's totally legit - they don't ask for any personal info, just help you get through the phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

0 coins

I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Definitely worth it when you can't get through the normal way.

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 6 WEEKS for my first payment and every time I call they just say 'still processing' with no real timeline. Meanwhile my rent is overdue and I can barely afford groceries.

0 coins

That's awful, I'm so sorry you're dealing with that. Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push things through.

0 coins

I hadn't thought of that. Do you know how to find out who my rep is?

0 coins

You can look it up on the Washington state legislature website. They have a district finder tool.

0 coins

Just want to clarify something for OP - you won't get paid for your first week because that's considered a waiting week. So even if processing is fast, you're looking at at least 2 weeks from filing to first payment.

0 coins

Wait, what's a waiting week? Nobody told me about that when I filed.

0 coins

It's basically an unpaid week that everyone has to serve. So if you filed this week, next week would be your waiting week, then the week after that would be your first payable week.

0 coins

I think they got rid of the waiting week during COVID but I'm not sure if it's still waived or not.

0 coins

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't been paid yet. I made the mistake of stopping because I figured what's the point if I'm not getting money, but then I had to go back and file all the missed weeks which was a nightmare.

0 coins

Good to know, thanks. I was wondering about that. How often do you have to file them?

0 coins

Every week, usually Sunday through Saturday is the claim week and you can file starting Sunday evening I think. Don't quote me on the exact times though.

Pro tip: sign up for direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card they send takes even longer and has fees. At least with direct deposit you get your money faster once it's approved.

0 coins

How do I set that up? Is it in the SecureAccess Washington portal?

0 coins

Yeah, log into your unemployment account and look for payment preferences or something like that. You'll need your bank routing and account number.

0 coins

The debit card isn't that bad honestly. I like having my unemployment money separate from my regular checking account.

0 coins

I got my first payment exactly 14 days after filing but I think I got lucky. My claim was pretty straightforward - laid off from a regular job with clear documentation.

0 coins

That gives me hope! Mine should be straightforward too, just a regular layoff situation.

0 coins

Yeah if you were a W-2 employee and got laid off it should be pretty fast. It's when you're self-employed or have weird work situations that things get complicated.

0 coins

Check your online account every few days to see if there are any pending issues that might delay your payment. Sometimes they need additional documentation and they don't always notify you right away.

0 coins

What kind of issues should I be looking for?

0 coins

Things like identity verification, work search requirements, or if they need to verify your wages with your employer. It'll show up in your account if there's something pending.

0 coins

When I was waiting for my first payment I called every single day trying to get an update. Probably called 200 times over two weeks and only got through twice. The system is just overwhelmed.

0 coins

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. I was doing the same thing - calling dozens of times a day and getting nowhere. At least with that service I could actually talk to someone.

0 coins

I might have to try that if my next claim gets stuck. The regular phone system is basically useless.

0 coins

honestly just be patient, the money will come eventually. i waited like 3 weeks but then got a big lump sum for all the back weeks at once

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. Did you get paid for all the weeks you filed claims for?

0 coins

yep except for the first week which was my waiting week. everything else came in one payment

0 coins

The key is to make sure you satisfy the work search requirements while you're waiting. They can deny your whole claim if you're not actively looking for work and documenting it properly.

0 coins

What exactly do I need to do for work search? How many jobs do I need to apply to?

0 coins

I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check the Washington ESD website for current requirements. Keep detailed records of everything.

0 coins

And make sure you register with WorkSource WA if you haven't already. That's usually a requirement too.

0 coins

I remember being in your shoes last year. The waiting is the worst part but once the payments start coming they're usually pretty reliable. Just hang in there.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. It's just scary not knowing when money is coming when you have bills due.

0 coins

I totally get it. See if you can work out payment plans with your creditors while you wait. Most companies are understanding about temporary unemployment situations.

0 coins

Quick question - are you sure you completed the entire application? Sometimes people think they're done but there are additional steps that aren't obvious.

0 coins

I think so? I got a confirmation number and it let me file my first weekly claim. What other steps might there be?

0 coins

Just double check your account to make sure there aren't any pending forms or verifications. Sometimes they add requirements after you file.

0 coins

The timeline really depends on your specific situation. If you quit your job vs. got laid off vs. got fired, they all have different processing requirements. Layoffs are usually the fastest.

0 coins

I was laid off due to budget cuts so hopefully that helps speed things up.

0 coins

Yeah that should be straightforward. Just make sure you have documentation from your employer if they ask for it.

0 coins

One more thing to try if you need to reach Washington ESD - I've had better luck calling right when they open at 8am or during lunch hours when it might be less busy. Still took forever but at least I didn't get hung up on as much.

0 coins

I tried that but even at 8am sharp I was caller number 500+ in the queue. It's just impossible to get through normally.

0 coins

That's why services like Claimyr exist. The regular system is just broken for actually reaching anyone who can help.

0 coins

Just want to add that you should expect your first payment to be smaller than your full weekly benefit amount because they usually hold back some for taxes unless you opt out of withholding.

0 coins

Good point, I forgot about taxes. Is there a way to change the withholding amount?

0 coins

Yeah you can adjust it in your account settings. I'd recommend having them take out at least 10% so you don't get hit with a big tax bill later.

0 coins

Bottom line - expect 2-4 weeks for your first payment if everything goes smoothly, but it could be longer if they need to investigate anything about your claim. Just keep filing weekly and be patient.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the advice. This has been really helpful. I'll just keep filing weekly and try to be patient.

0 coins

Good luck! The waiting sucks but the money will come. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and work search requirements.
