How long does it take for first unemployment check from Washington ESD?
Just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get your first payment? I know I have to do the weekly claims but I'm not sure when to expect that first check to actually hit my account. My bills are piling up and I'm getting stressed about the timing. Anyone know the usual timeframe for Washington ESD to process first payments?

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks after your claim is approved, but that's assuming there's no adjudication issues. You have to file your weekly claims during that time too or you won't get paid for those weeks.

•Thanks! Do you know if weekends count toward the processing time?

Natasha Kuznetsova
•Weekends don't count as business days for processing, so keep that in mind when calculating.

Mine took forever because they had to verify my identity first. Ended up being almost 6 weeks before I saw any money. Make sure all your info matches exactly what's on your Social Security card.

•Oh no, 6 weeks?? That's terrifying. How did you know they were doing identity verification?

•They sent me a letter and it showed up in my online account. Check your messages on the Washington ESD website regularly.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legitimate? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real, they basically handle the waiting and calling for you. Worth checking out if you can't get through the normal way.

•I was skeptical too but actually used Claimyr last month when my claim got stuck. They got me through to someone who explained the delay. Pretty straightforward process.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 4 weeks and still nothing. They make it impossible to reach anyone and when you do get through they give you different answers every time. I'm about to lose my apartment!

•I feel you man, this is so stressful. Have you tried calling first thing in the morning?

•Tried everything - early morning, late at night, different numbers. Nothing works!

For first-time filers, here's what usually happens: 1) You file initial claim 2) Wait for approval (1-2 weeks if no issues) 3) File weekly claims 4) First payment processes 5-7 business days after weekly claim. So total time is typically 3-4 weeks from initial filing to money in your account.

•This is super helpful, thank you! So I should expect about a month total?

•That's about right if everything goes smoothly. The key is making sure you file those weekly claims on time.

•What if you miss a weekly claim? Can you still get paid for that week?

Natasha Kuznetsova
•You might be able to do a late claim but it's complicated. Better to just file on time every week.

My experience was pretty typical - filed on a Monday, got approved the following Friday, filed my weekly claims that Sunday, and got paid the Thursday after that. So about 3 weeks total from filing to payment.

•That gives me hope! Did you have any complications with your claim?

•Nope, everything was straightforward. I think it helps that I had all my employment info ready when I filed.

Make sure you're checking your account online regularly. Sometimes they need additional info and if you don't respond quickly it delays everything. I almost missed a request for wage verification because I wasn't checking.

•Good point, I'll start checking daily. Where exactly do those messages show up?

Javier Mendoza
•In your secure message center when you log into the Washington ESD website. There's usually a notification if you have new messages.

honestly it's such a crapshoot... some people get paid right away others wait months. really depends on your situation and if they flag anything weird about your claim

Oliver Wagner
•What kind of things get flagged? I'm worried I might have messed something up.

•stuff like if you quit vs got fired, if your wages don't match what the employer reported, identity issues, etc

If your claim goes into adjudication, that's when things can take forever. Mine was in adjudication for 6 weeks before I used Claimyr to finally talk to someone. Turns out it was just a simple clarification they needed about my separation from my employer.

•How do you know if your claim is in adjudication?

Emma Thompson
•It'll show up in your account status. Usually says something like 'adjudication in progress' or 'pending review'.

•Mine said that for 2 months! Finally got resolved but man what a nightmare.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my bank account like 10 times a day waiting for that first payment. It did come eventually but the stress was unreal.

•That's exactly what I'm doing right now! Obsessively checking my account.

•I get it, you're not alone. Just try to be patient and keep filing those weekly claims.

One thing to remember - your first payment might be less than expected because of the waiting week. Washington ESD doesn't pay for your first week of unemployment, so your first check covers week 2 and beyond.

•Wait, so I lose a whole week of benefits? That's not fair!

Natasha Kuznetsova
•Yeah it's called the waiting week. It's just how the system works unfortunately.

•I thought they got rid of the waiting week during COVID?

•They did temporarily but it's back now for regular unemployment claims.

Three weeks if you're lucky! I know people who waited 3 months because Washington ESD is completely overwhelmed and understaffed. The phone system is a joke.

Oliver Wagner
•3 months?! How did they survive that long without income?

Isabella Santos
•Credit cards, borrowing money from family, food banks. It's horrible what they put people through.

For what it's worth, I also used Claimyr when I had questions about my weekly claims. The agent was able to explain some stuff that wasn't clear on the website. Made the whole process less stressful knowing I could actually talk to someone.

•I'm definitely going to look into that if I run into issues. Thanks for the recommendation!

Also make sure your direct deposit info is correct. I had a friend whose payment got delayed because they had an old bank account on file. Check that stuff before you even file if possible.

•Good catch! I'll double-check that right now.

•Yeah better to fix it now than wait weeks for a payment that goes to a closed account.

the whole thing is just a waiting game unfortunately. keep filing your weekly claims and eventually the money will show up. try not to stress too much about it

Final tip - keep records of everything. Screenshot your weekly claims, save any emails or letters from Washington ESD, write down dates and times you called. If there are issues later, you'll want that documentation.

Oliver Wagner
•That's smart advice. I'll start keeping a file of everything.

Hang in there OP. I know it's scary waiting for that first payment but most people do get their benefits eventually. The system is slow but it usually works out in the end.

My advice is to apply for everything you can while waiting - food assistance, utility help, rental assistance. Don't just sit there waiting for unemployment to come through.

Oliver Wagner
•That's a great point. I should probably look into other resources too.

•Definitely. Your local DSHS office can help you figure out what you qualify for.

Just wanted to say thanks for asking this question OP. I'm in the same boat and all these answers are really helpful. Nice to know I'm not alone in this stress!

One last thing - if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD and can't get through, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it beat spending hours on hold. Just something to keep in mind if you run into roadblocks.
