When do I get my first Washington ESD unemployment check after filing?
Just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm trying to figure out when I can expect my first payment. I know I have to file weekly claims but nobody explained the timing to me. Do I get paid right after my first weekly claim or is there some kind of waiting period? I'm really stressing because rent is due next week and this is my first time ever being unemployed.

There's typically a one-week waiting period for your first payment. So you'll file your initial claim, then file your first weekly claim, but you won't get paid for that first week. Your first payment comes after your second weekly claim is processed, assuming everything goes smoothly with no adjudication issues.

•So if I filed Tuesday, when should I expect my first actual payment to hit my account?

•If your claim gets approved without any holds, probably around 2-3 weeks from when you first filed. The waiting week plus processing time for your second weekly claim.

Just went through this myself. Filed on a Monday, did my first weekly claim the following Sunday, then had to wait another week to file my second weekly claim. Got my first payment about 4 days after that second weekly claim was submitted. The whole process took about 3 weeks total.

•That's actually really helpful to know the timeline. Did you have any issues getting through to Washington ESD when you had questions?

•Oh man, calling Washington ESD directly was a nightmare. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Eventually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent - saved me so much time and frustration.

•Never heard of that, how does it work?

The waiting week is state law, can't get around it unfortunately. But make sure you're filing your weekly claims exactly when you're supposed to or you could delay things even more. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the filing windows.

•what happens if you miss the weekly claim deadline?

•You can usually file a late claim but it might require additional verification or cause delays. Better to set a reminder and file on time every week.

This whole system is so confusing for first timers! I remember being terrified I was doing something wrong when I first filed. The Washington ESD website doesn't explain the timing very clearly either.

•RIGHT?? I've read through their FAQ like 10 times and still feel lost about half of this stuff.

•The key is understanding that your first week is always unpaid - it's called the waiting week. Then you get paid for subsequent weeks as long as you remain eligible and file your weekly claims on time.

ugh the whole washington esd system takes forever... took me like a month to get my first check because they had to verify my employment history or something

Scarlett Forster
•A whole month?? What happened with the verification?

•they said my employer didnt respond to their request for info so it went into adjudication. eventually got sorted out but was stressful

To clarify the exact timeline: Week 1 is your waiting week (no payment), Week 2 you file your first weekly claim (no payment yet), Week 3 you file your second weekly claim and should receive payment for Week 2. Payments are typically direct deposited 2-3 business days after your weekly claim is processed successfully.

•This breakdown is super helpful, thank you! So basically plan for about 3 weeks before seeing any money.

Arnav Bengali
•Exactly, and that's assuming no complications like adjudication or verification issues that could extend the timeline.

About that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier - it's basically a callback service that gets you connected to Washington ESD agents without the endless hold times. You go to claimyr.com and they call you back when an agent is available. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•sounds too good to be true... how much does it cost?

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't require any personal info upfront and focus on just getting you connected. Way better than spending my whole day trying to call Washington ESD directly.

•Might have to try this if I run into issues. The thought of being stuck on hold for hours sounds awful.

first time filing unemployment too and this thread is making me feel better about the timeline. was starting to panic that something was wrong with my claim

•Same! It's reassuring to know the 3 week thing is normal and not just me doing something wrong.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you're meeting the job search requirements from the very beginning. Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week and you need to log them in your WorkSource account. Don't wait until later to start this.

Scarlett Forster
•Wait, I have to be job searching already? I thought I had time to figure that out.
0 coins
Rachel Tao
•Yes, the job search requirement starts immediately unless you're on standby status. You'll need to register with WorkSourceWA and start documenting your job contacts.

Scarlett Forster
•This is getting overwhelming. Is there a good guide somewhere for all these requirements?

Arnav Bengali
The WorkSource registration is actually pretty straightforward once you get into it. Just make sure you're documenting everything properly because Washington ESD can audit your job search activities at any time.

•what happens if they audit and you messed up the documentation?

•Could result in disqualification or overpayment issues. Better to be thorough from the start than deal with problems later.

The whole first month of unemployment is just figuring out all these systems and requirements. It gets easier once you get into the routine of weekly claims and job searches.

•I hope so! Right now it feels like there are so many moving pieces I need to keep track of.

pro tip: screenshot everything when you file your weekly claims. if something goes wrong you'll want proof of what you submitted

Scarlett Forster
•Good thinking, I'll start doing that right away.

Just to recap for anyone else reading this: First payment timing depends on when you file, but generally expect 2-3 weeks from your initial claim filing date. The waiting week is unavoidable, then you need time for processing your second weekly claim. Stay on top of job search requirements and file weekly claims on schedule to avoid delays.

For anyone who ends up needing to actually talk to Washington ESD about their claim status or any issues, I really can't recommend Claimyr enough. Saved me probably 10+ hours of trying to get through on the phone the traditional way.

one more question - do payments come on the same day each week once you get into the routine?
0 coins
Arnav Bengali
•Usually yes, once you establish a pattern it's pretty consistent. Most people get their payments on Tuesdays or Wednesdays after filing their Sunday weekly claim.

Derek Olson
•that helps with budgeting, thanks

Rachel Tao
The consistency helps but always file your weekly claims as early as possible in the filing window. Don't wait until the last minute because if there are any system issues you might miss the deadline.

•Good point, I'll make sure to file first thing Sunday morning from now on.

This has been such a helpful thread! I wish I had found something like this when I first filed. The Washington ESD website really should explain the timing better for first-time filers.

Scarlett Forster
•Seriously! Having real people explain it makes so much more sense than trying to decode the official website.

started my claim last week so this timeline info is perfect timing for me too. glad i found this thread

Final reminder for everyone: Keep filing those weekly claims even if you haven't received your first payment yet. Missing weekly claims can cause much bigger delays than the normal waiting period. Stay consistent with the process and the payments will come.

And remember if you do run into problems and need to speak with Washington ESD directly, services like Claimyr are there to help you actually get through to an agent instead of spending your whole day on hold. Sometimes talking to a real person is the only way to resolve complex issues with your claim.

•Definitely keeping that option in mind. The horror stories about trying to call Washington ESD are everywhere.

•Yeah, having a backup plan for getting help seems really smart given how hard it is to reach them normally.
