When do you get your first unemployment check from Washington ESD?

Just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Thursday and I'm wondering when I can expect to receive my first unemployment payment. I know there's a waiting week but I'm confused about the timing. Do I need to wait for my claim to be approved first? Should I keep filing weekly claims even if my status shows pending? I'm getting stressed about bills coming due and need to know what timeline to expect for that first check.

The waiting week means you won't get paid for your first week of filing, but after that it depends on when your claim gets approved. If there's no issues with your claim, you should see your first payment about 2-3 weeks after filing your initial claim.

So I definitely need to keep filing my weekly claims even while it shows pending status?

Yes absolutely! Keep filing every week or you'll lose those weeks of benefits. The system tracks all your weekly filings even during the approval process.

it really depends on if your claim goes into adjudication or not. mine was approved in like 5 days and i got my first payment the following tuesday after my second weekly filing

How do you know if your claim is in adjudication? My status just says 'your claim is being processed' which doesn't tell me much.

If it goes to adjudication, your account will usually show specific issues that need to be resolved. Since yours just says processing, that's probably a good sign that it's moving through normally.

I had a similar situation last month and was getting frustrated trying to get through to Washington ESD to check on my claim status. A friend told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent without waiting on hold forever. I was skeptical at first but tried it and got through to someone in like 10 minutes. They were able to tell me exactly where my claim stood in the process. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you want to see how it works.

Never heard of that before. Did they charge you anything for getting through to Washington ESD?

0 coins

There is a fee but honestly it was worth it to get answers instead of calling 50+ times and never getting through. Way less stressful than the usual Washington ESD phone nightmare.

0 coins

I'm curious about this too. The regular Washington ESD phone system is absolutely impossible to navigate.

Generally speaking, if you filed last Thursday and there are no complications, you're looking at getting your first payment around this coming Tuesday or Wednesday. Washington ESD processes payments on Tuesdays typically. But you HAVE to keep filing those weekly claims!

That would be perfect timing if it works out that way. I've been filing weekly so hopefully I'm on track.

Just remember the first week is unpaid due to the waiting week rule, so your first actual payment will be for your second week of filing.

The Washington ESD system is SO SLOW compared to other states. My brother in Oregon got his first check within a week. Here it takes forever and you can never get anyone on the phone to explain delays.

Every state is different with their processing times. At least Washington ESD has a pretty decent online system for checking your claim status once you get logged in.

decent is being generous lol that website crashes constantly

I'm in a similar boat - filed 10 days ago and still showing pending. The uncertainty is killing me because I need to know if I should be looking for temporary work or waiting for my claim to process.

You should always be doing your job search activities regardless of your claim status. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they do audit those.

Yeah I'm keeping up with WorkSource WA requirements, just wondering about taking on temp work and how that affects the claim.

Any work has to be reported on your weekly claim, even if it's just a few hours. Better to report everything honestly than risk an overpayment issue later.

From my experience, first payments usually hit bank accounts on Tuesdays if you're on direct deposit. If you're getting paper checks those take longer obviously. Make sure your banking info is correct in your account!

0 coins

I did set up direct deposit when I filed. Good to know Tuesday is the usual payment day.

0 coins

Direct deposit is definitely the way to go. Paper checks can take an extra 5-7 days and sometimes get lost in the mail.

If your claim is taking longer than expected, I'd try calling Washington ESD but good luck getting through. I tried calling for 2 weeks straight before someone mentioned Claimyr to me. Used their service and finally got to speak with someone who explained my claim was held up for identity verification. Got it resolved same day.

Identity verification issues seem to be really common lately. Did they tell you what specific documents they needed?

They needed a copy of my driver's license and social security card uploaded to the secure document center. Once I did that, claim was approved within 48 hours.

The waiting week is so frustrating when you're already stressed about money. I wish Washington ESD would eliminate that requirement like some other states have done.

0 coins

I think the waiting week is supposed to reduce fraudulent claims or something like that. Still annoying when you legitimately need the money right away.

At least you don't lose that week completely - you get it paid out when your claim ends if you're eligible for the full benefit period.

Pro tip: sign up for text alerts in your Washington ESD account. They'll send you notifications when there are updates to your claim status or when payments are processed. Saves you from constantly checking the website.

0 coins

I didn't know about text alerts! Where do you find that setting in the account?

0 coins

It's under account preferences or notification settings. Definitely worth setting up so you're not obsessively checking your claim status every day.

Been through this process twice in the last 3 years unfortunately. First time took about 2.5 weeks to get first payment, second time was only 8 days because I knew exactly what to expect and had all my documents ready.

What documents should someone have ready when filing to avoid delays?

0 coins

Have your last pay stub, reason for separation paperwork if you have it, and make sure your personal info matches exactly what's on file with your employer. Small discrepancies can trigger reviews.

The whole process is such a black box. You file your claim and then just have to wait and hope everything goes smoothly. At least the Washington ESD website usually shows if there are outstanding issues that need attention.

That's why I ended up using Claimyr when my claim seemed stuck. Sometimes you need to actually talk to a human to understand what's happening behind the scenes.

0 coins

The online account is helpful but it doesn't always explain WHY something is delayed or what specific action you need to take.

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you're worried about the timeline, start applying for jobs immediately and keep good records. The job search requirement kicks in right away and they can audit your activities retroactively.

0 coins

I've been doing job searches through WorkSource WA but wasn't sure if I needed to start immediately or wait for approval.

Melissa Lin

Start immediately! The job search requirement begins with your first week of filing, not when your claim gets approved. Keep detailed records of everything.

0 coins

Bottom line - if you filed last Thursday with no complications, you should see your first payment next Tuesday or Wednesday for your second week of filing. Keep filing weekly, keep job searching, and try not to stress too much about the timeline unless it goes past 3 weeks.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Feeling much more confident about the process now.

Good luck! The waiting is definitely the hardest part but it usually works out fine if you stay on top of your weekly filings.
