How long does Washington ESD unemployment take to process and start paying benefits?

I just submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website last week and I'm wondering how long this whole process actually takes? My last job ended unexpectedly and I need to know when I can expect my first payment. The website says it can take time but doesn't give specific timeframes. Does anyone know how long it typically takes from filing to getting your first check? Also worried about the weekly claims - when do I need to start filing those?

It varies a lot depending on your situation. If everything goes smoothly, you might see your first payment in 2-3 weeks. But if there are any issues with your claim, it could take much longer. You should start filing your weekly claims right away even if your initial claim is still processing.

Thanks! I wasn't sure about the weekly claims timing. Should I be worried if I don't hear anything for a few weeks?

Not necessarily. No news can be good news sometimes. Just keep filing your weekly claims and checking your account.

Mine took about 10 days from filing to first payment, but that was pretty lucky. I had straightforward circumstances though - laid off due to company downsizing with clear documentation.

That's reassuring! Mine was a similar situation so hopefully it goes smoothly.

You're lucky! Mine's been in adjudication for 6 weeks now with no end in sight.

The initial claim processing typically takes 1-3 weeks if there are no complications. However, if your claim goes into adjudication (which happens when there are questions about your separation from work), it can take 6-12 weeks or longer. Your waiting week will be the first week you file, and you won't get paid for that week.

What exactly triggers adjudication? I want to make sure I avoid that if possible.

Common triggers include: quitting your job, being fired for cause, having multiple employers, or discrepancies in the information you provided versus what your employer reports.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status but their phone lines are always busy. It's so frustrating when you need answers and can't reach anyone. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

I had the same problem until I found claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

That sounds almost too good to be true. Does it actually work?

Yeah it really does! I was skeptical too but it got me through to someone in about 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own.

Just want to add that you MUST file your weekly claims every week even if you haven't received your first payment yet. I made the mistake of waiting until my claim was approved and lost out on several weeks of benefits.

Good to know! I'll make sure to keep filing every week.

This is so important! I see people make this mistake all the time.

The whole system is just broken honestly. I filed 8 weeks ago and still haven't seen a dime. My claim has been in adjudication forever and no one can tell me why or when it will be resolved. I'm about to lose my apartment.

That's awful. Have you tried calling the adjudication line specifically?

I've tried everything. Can never get through to anyone who can actually help.

You might want to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. If you really need to talk to someone, it could be worth it.

From my experience, if you're eligible for regular unemployment insurance, the timeline is usually: Week 1 - file initial claim, Week 2 - waiting week (no payment), Week 3 - first payment if everything is approved. But this assumes no complications.

That timeline makes sense. Fingers crossed mine goes that smoothly!

That's pretty optimistic. In my experience it's usually closer to 4-6 weeks even for straightforward claims.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims. Even if you don't hear anything for weeks, keep filing. And make sure you're doing your job search activities - they can ask for proof at any time.

How many job search activities do I need to do each week?

Lim Wong

•

It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements in your account.

And keep good records! I learned that the hard way when they audited my job search log.

I just got my first payment after 3 weeks of waiting. Hang in there! The key is being patient and making sure you don't miss any weekly claim filings.

That's encouraging! Was your claim pretty straightforward?

0 coins

Yeah, I was laid off due to lack of work, so no complications. Just had to wait for the system to process everything.

The worst part is not knowing where you stand. I wish Washington ESD would give better status updates instead of just saying 'in progress' for weeks on end.

Agreed! The communication is terrible. You're just left hanging without any real information.

0 coins

That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist - people get desperate to talk to someone who can give them actual information about their claim.

One thing that helped me was checking my account online regularly. Sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved that you won't know about unless you log in and check.

Good point! I'll make sure to check frequently.

Yes, and if you see any 'action required' notices, deal with them immediately. Delays in responding can really slow things down.

Been there, done that. Filed in early December, got my first payment right after New Year's. About 3 weeks total. Not bad considering the holidays.

That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

Just kept filing weekly and stayed patient. Made sure all my information was accurate from the start.

If you're really stressed about timing, you might want to look into local food banks or emergency assistance programs while you wait. It can take the pressure off a bit.

Good suggestion. The waiting period can be really tough financially.

I hadn't thought of that. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know it's an option.

Just remember that even if your claim takes a while to process, you'll get paid retroactively for all the weeks you filed (except the waiting week). So don't give up!

That's really good to know! I was worried about losing out on weeks while waiting.

0 coins

Exactly! As long as you keep filing those weekly claims, you'll get paid for all eligible weeks once it's approved.
