How long before you receive Washington ESD unemployment benefits after filing claim?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes before you actually start receiving benefits. My savings are getting pretty low and I need to know what to expect. The website says it can take time but doesn't give specific timeframes. Has anyone recently gone through this process? How long did you wait from filing to getting your first payment?

It really depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not. If it's straightforward with no issues, you might see your first payment in 2-3 weeks after filing. But if there are any red flags or questions about your separation from work, it could take much longer.

•What kind of red flags would cause delays? I was laid off due to company downsizing, so it should be pretty clear cut.

•Layoffs are usually fine. Red flags would be things like quitting without good cause, being fired for misconduct, or having wage discrepancies. Since you were laid off, you should be okay.

took me about 18 days from filing to first payment but that was back in january. make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you havent been approved yet or you'll lose those weeks

•Good point about the weekly claims. I've been doing those religiously every Sunday.

•Wait, you have to file weekly claims before you're even approved? That seems weird.

•yes! if you dont file for a week you cant go back and claim it later. learned that the hard way

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for three weeks to check on my claim status and it's impossible. The phone lines are always busy and when I do get through, I get disconnected. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in under 30 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone at ESD.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone about my adjudication.

•Yeah it's real. They basically call for you and get you connected when an agent is available. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

•Sounds too good to be true but I might try it. Been calling for weeks with no luck.

The whole system is a joke. I filed in March and didn't get my first payment until May because they said they needed to 'verify' my employment history. Like, all my employers are in the system already! Washington ESD is completely overwhelmed and understaffed.

•Two months?! That's terrifying. How did you survive financially during that time?

•Credit cards and borrowing from family. It was awful. The backpay helped but the stress was incredible.

•This is exactly why I'm scared to file. The system seems broken.

For what it's worth, most claims do process within the standard timeframe. The horror stories get more attention, but plenty of people get approved and start receiving benefits within 2-3 weeks. Make sure you're checking your SecureAccess Washington account regularly for any messages or requests for additional information.

•I check it daily but haven't seen any messages yet. Just shows my claim is being processed.

•Same here. Filed two weeks ago and just waiting. The uncertainty is the worst part.

also make sure you're doing your job search activities. washington esd requires 3 job search activities per week and they will audit you randomly. keep good records or they'll deny your benefits

•I've been applying to jobs but didn't know about the specific requirement. What counts as a job search activity?

•applying for jobs, networking events, job fairs, informational interviews. just make sure you log everything in worksourcewa.com

•I thought it was only 2 activities per week?

•It's 3 activities per week for most people, but it can vary based on your situation. Check your eligibility requirements in your ESD account.

Got my first payment exactly 16 days after filing. No issues, clean separation, had all my paperwork ready. The key is being prepared and responsive if they need anything from you.

•That's encouraging! What paperwork did you have ready?

•Pay stubs, termination letter, any severance documentation. Basically anything that proves why you're unemployed and what you were earning.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got through to ESD today. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim - they needed verification of my last employer's business closure. Would have taken me forever to figure that out on my own.

•How much did it cost? I'm thinking about trying it too.

•It was worth it to finally get answers. Much cheaper than the stress and lost time of trying to call myself.

•Good to hear a success story. Might be my backup plan if I can't get through soon.

Been waiting 5 weeks and still nothing. My claim shows 'adjudication in progress' but no one can tell me what that means or how long it takes. Starting to think I should just give up and find any job I can.

•Don't give up! Adjudication just means they're reviewing something about your claim. It could be routine verification. Have you tried contacting them?

•Tried calling hundreds of times. Never get through. This is ridiculous.

•This is exactly the situation where Claimyr helped me. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to understand what's happening.

Just wanted to update everyone - got my first payment today, exactly 3 weeks after filing. No issues, just the standard processing time. Keep filing those weekly claims and be patient!

•Congratulations! That gives me hope. I'm at 10 days now so hopefully soon.

•Three weeks seems to be pretty typical from what I'm seeing. Glad it worked out for you.

The timing also depends on when you file during the week and when you complete your weekly claims. I've heard Friday filings can take longer because of weekend processing delays.

•I filed on a Tuesday, so hopefully that helps. Thanks for all the information everyone!

•I don't think the day matters that much. It's more about whether your claim is flagged for review.

Make sure you have direct deposit set up or you'll be waiting even longer for a debit card to arrive in the mail. Direct deposit is much faster once your claim is approved.

•Good point! I set up direct deposit when I filed, so that should help.

•The debit card option isn't that bad. Got mine in about 5 days after my first payment was approved.

Bottom line is most people get their first payment within 2-4 weeks if there are no complications. Keep filing weekly, check your account daily, and respond immediately to any requests for information. The system isn't perfect but it does work eventually.
