When do you get unemployment payments from Washington ESD after filing?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering when I can expect to actually receive payments. My claim shows as 'pending' in my account but there's no timeline anywhere. I need to know when do you get unemployment payments so I can plan my finances. Has anyone been through this recently? How long does it typically take from filing to getting your first check?

it usually takes 2-3 weeks after you file your initial claim before you see your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim

•Thanks! Do I need to do anything during those 2-3 weeks or just wait?

•you still need to file your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval

The timeline depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to verify your employment history or investigate any issues, it can take much longer - sometimes 4-6 weeks or more. Check your account regularly for any requests for additional information.

•How do I know if my claim is in adjudication? My status just says pending.

•If it's in adjudication, you'll typically see a status change or receive a letter explaining what they need to review. Sometimes they'll request documents through your online account.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to check on my claim status but can never get through! The phone system is impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling!

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm desperate at this point.

•They basically handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent becomes available. Much better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

From my experience, the first payment usually comes about 10-14 days after your claim is approved, not from when you first file. So if there are delays in approval, that pushes everything back.

Simon White
•That makes sense. So I need to wait for approval first, then another 10-14 days for the actual payment?

•Exactly. And remember you'll only get paid for the weeks you've successfully filed weekly claims for.

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday! I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to file them until my claim was approved and missed out on 2 weeks of benefits.

•Oh no! Can you go back and file for those missed weeks?

•Sometimes but it's complicated. Washington ESD might allow backdating in certain circumstances but it's not guaranteed.

•This is why I always tell people to file their weekly claims religiously, even if the main claim is still pending

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing. They make it so difficult on purpose to discourage people from claiming benefits they're entitled to.

•I understand the frustration, but there are legitimate reasons for delays - they need to verify eligibility and prevent fraud. Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues on your account?

•Nothing shows up but how would I know?? The website is confusing and I can't get anyone on the phone!

just got my first payment yesterday after filing 3 weeks ago, so it does happen eventually

•That's encouraging! Was your claim straightforward or did you have any complications?

Ally Tailer
•pretty straightforward, just standard job loss due to layoffs. no adjudication or anything

One thing that helped me was using Claimyr to actually speak with a Washington ESD representative. They could tell me exactly where my claim stood in the process and what was causing the delay. Sometimes there are issues that don't show up clearly in your online account.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money waiting for benefits.

•The peace of mind was worth it for me. Better than spending days trying to get through on my own and never reaching anyone.

I think there's also a difference between when they process the payment vs when it actually hits your bank account. Even after Washington ESD processes it, it can take a few more days depending on your bank.

Simon White
•Good point. Do they send payments by direct deposit or check?
0 coins
Miranda Singer
•You can choose either when you set up your claim. Direct deposit is faster - usually 1-2 business days vs 5-7 days for mailed checks.

Also remember that your first payment might be larger than usual because it could include backpay for multiple weeks if there were delays in processing your claim.

•That's actually really helpful to know. I was worried I'd lose those weeks completely.

Nasira Ibanez
•Exactly - as long as you filed your weekly claims, you should get paid for all eligible weeks once your claim is approved.

•Have you tried reaching out to local assistance programs while you wait? Some cities have emergency rental assistance.

•didn't know that was an option, will look into it thanks

My neighbor went through this last year and it took almost 2 months because they had to verify her previous employer information. The company had closed down so it was complicated. Just saying it can vary a lot depending on your specific situation.

Simon White
•Wow, 2 months is scary. How did she manage financially during that time?

Holly Lascelles
•She had to borrow money from family and apply for food assistance. Not ideal but she did eventually get all the backpay.

Quick tip - if you set up direct deposit, make sure your bank info is exactly correct. I had a typo in my account number and it delayed my first payment by another week while they fixed it.

•Good catch! I should double-check mine just to be safe.

•Yeah definitely verify it now rather than finding out the hard way like I did

The waiting is the worst part. I kept checking my account obsessively every day. Try to find other things to focus on while you wait because watching it won't make it go faster.

•Easier said than done when you're worried about bills! But you're probably right.

•I found it helpful to set specific times to check rather than constantly refreshing. Like once in the morning and once at night.

Just want to add that if you're getting conflicting information or still confused about your timeline, services like Claimyr can be really helpful. I used them when I couldn't figure out why my payments suddenly stopped, and the agent was able to explain there was a job search requirement issue I wasn't aware of.
0 coins
Simon White
•That's exactly the kind of thing I'm worried about - issues I don't even know exist.

•Right, sometimes there are behind-the-scenes things that aren't obvious from just looking at your online account. Having someone who can actually talk to Washington ESD on your behalf makes a huge difference.

One more thing - don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to be actively looking for work and documenting it even while waiting for your first payment. Some people think they can wait until benefits start but you need to be searching from day one.

•Thanks for the reminder! I've been applying to jobs but wasn't sure about the documentation part.

•Yeah you need to log your job search activities in the WorkSourceWA system. It's separate from your regular weekly claims but equally important.

Nasira Ibanez
•Exactly - failing to meet job search requirements can cause issues with your benefits even if everything else is processed correctly.
