How long does it take to get paid by Washington ESD unemployment?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to actually receive payment? I've been hearing different things from people - some say 2 weeks, others say up to a month. My claim status shows as pending right now. I really need to know what to expect because I have bills due soon. Has anyone recently gone through this process? What was your timeline from filing to getting your first payment?

It depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not. If it's straightforward with no issues, you should get paid within 2-3 weeks after filing your first weekly claim. But if there are any red flags or questions about your separation from work, it can take much longer.

•How do I know if my claim needs adjudication? Is there a way to check that on the Washington ESD website?

•You'll see it in your account if there's an adjudication issue. It will show as 'adjudication in progress' or something similar. If you don't see that, you're probably good to go.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten anything. My claim is stuck in adjudication hell and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to find out what's wrong. This is so frustrating!

•Have you tried calling early in the morning? I heard they open the phone lines at 8am and that's your best bet for getting through.

•I've tried calling dozens of times at different hours. Either it's busy or I get disconnected after waiting on hold forever.

•I had the same problem reaching Washington ESD agents until I found this service called Claimyr. You go to claimyr.com and they basically call for you and get you connected to an actual person. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It saved me so much time and frustration!

From my experience, if everything goes smoothly you should get your first payment about 2 weeks after you file your first weekly claim. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims on time every week, even if your initial claim is still processing.

•So I need to keep filing weekly claims even before my initial claim is approved?
0 coins
Zachary Hughes
•Yes, absolutely! If you don't file your weekly claims, you won't get paid for those weeks even if your claim gets approved later. It's like a weekly check-in that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

ugh this whole system is so confusing. i filed 2 weeks ago and have no idea whats happening. my account just says pending and theres no other info

•Pending usually means they're still processing your initial claim. As long as you don't see any issues flagged in your account, it should move forward soon.

•ok thanks. do i need to do anything else while i wait?

•Just keep filing your weekly claims and make sure you're doing your job search activities. You need to log your job search contacts in WorkSourceWA.

Here's the typical timeline I've seen: Week 1 - File initial claim, Week 2 - File first weekly claim, Week 3 - Get determination letter, Week 4 - First payment if approved. But this assumes no complications or adjudication issues.

Jeremiah Brown
•That's really helpful, thank you! What kind of complications usually cause delays?
0 coins
Chris King
•Usually things like questions about why you left your job, wage disputes, or if you worked in another state recently. Anything that makes Washington ESD need to investigate further.

I got lucky and received my first payment exactly 14 days after filing. But I had a very straightforward layoff situation with no complications.

•That gives me hope! My situation is pretty straightforward too - company laid off half the staff due to budget cuts.

•Yeah, that should be quick then. Just make sure you have all your documentation ready in case they ask for it.

Update: I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Turns out there was an issue with my employer's response that was holding up my claim. The agent was able to push it through and I should get paid next week!

Jeremiah Brown
•That's great news! How much did the Claimyr service cost?

Amelia Cartwright
•It was worth every penny to finally get answers. I was going crazy not knowing what was happening with my claim.

•Glad it worked out for you! Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things moving.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account every day obsessively when I first filed. Try to be patient - Washington ESD is pretty backed up right now.

Jeremiah Brown
•I'm definitely checking my account multiple times a day! It's hard not to when you're worried about money.

•I totally get it. Just try to focus on your job search in the meantime - it'll help pass the time and you need to do it anyway.

One thing to remember - your first payment will be for the week AFTER your waiting week. So if you filed on January 1st, your first payable week would be January 8th-14th, and you'd get paid for that week sometime in late January.

Jeremiah Brown
•Wait, there's a waiting week? Nobody told me about that!
0 coins
Royal_GM_Mark
•Yeah, the first week of your claim is unpaid - it's called the waiting week. It's been that way for years in Washington state.

Zachary Hughes
•Actually, I think they eliminated the waiting week during COVID and it hasn't come back yet. You should get paid for your first week now.

WASHINGTON ESD IS A JOKE! I've been waiting 6 weeks and still nothing. Meanwhile my rent is due and I'm eating ramen every day. This system is completely broken!!!

•I understand your frustration, but have you tried getting help with your specific case? There might be something specific holding up your claim that can be resolved.

•I've tried everything. Called, emailed, even went to the office in person. Nobody can give me a straight answer.

•You should try Claimyr - they specialize in getting people connected to Washington ESD agents who can actually help. Check out claimyr.com, they have a demo video that explains how it works.

For what it's worth, I filed my claim 3 weeks ago and just got my first payment yesterday. No adjudication issues, just normal processing time.

Jeremiah Brown
•That's encouraging! Did you get a determination letter before the payment came?
0 coins
Logan Greenburg
•Yes, I got the determination letter about 5 days before the payment showed up in my account.

my cousin works at Washington ESD and she says they're really backed up right now. they're trying to process claims as fast as they can but theres just so many

Royal_GM_Mark
•That makes sense. I've noticed the wait times have gotten longer recently. Probably seasonal layoffs adding to the volume.

•yeah she said january is always busy because of holiday layoffs and stuff

The uncertainty is almost worse than not having money. At least if I knew it would take exactly X weeks, I could plan around that. But not knowing is killing me.

Sophia Long
•I totally feel you on that. The not knowing is so stressful when you're already dealing with job loss.

•Exactly! And everyone gives you different timelines so you don't know what to believe.

Just want to add - make sure you're setting up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting a debit card in the mail can add another week to when you actually get your money.
0 coins
Jeremiah Brown
•Good point! I did set up direct deposit when I filed. How long does that usually take to process?
0 coins
Harper Thompson
•Direct deposit is usually next business day once the payment is issued. Much faster than waiting for a card.

I'm in a similar situation - filed 2 weeks ago and still waiting. Trying to stay positive but it's hard when bills are piling up.

The system works, but it's slow. I eventually got all my back pay once my claim was approved. Just hang in there and keep filing your weekly claims.

Jeremiah Brown
•That's reassuring to hear. I'm trying to stay patient but it's tough.

Has anyone else noticed that the Washington ESD website is super slow lately? It takes forever to load my claim information.

•Yeah, their website has been having issues. I think they're dealing with high traffic volumes.

•Makes sense. Probably a lot of people checking their claims constantly like me!

Quick question - do you get paid for the week you file your claim or starting the week after?
0 coins
Royal_GM_Mark
•You get paid starting from the week you file your claim, but remember there might be a waiting week depending on current rules.

Ella Lewis
•Thanks! I filed on a Wednesday, so I'm not sure if that counts as a full week or not.
