When do you get unemployment benefits after filing with Washington ESD?
I filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering when I can expect to actually start receiving benefits. My employer laid me off two weeks ago and I'm starting to stress about bills. I know there's a waiting week but I'm confused about the timeline. Do benefits start immediately after approval or is there additional processing time? Also when do I need to start filing weekly claims?

You'll have a one-week waiting period before benefits begin, but the timeline depends on whether your claim needs adjudication. If everything is straightforward, you could see your first payment 2-3 weeks after filing. You should start filing weekly claims immediately even while waiting for approval.

•Thanks! What exactly triggers adjudication? I'm worried something might delay my claim.

•Common triggers include quit vs layoff disputes, earnings discrepancies, or if you worked in multiple states. Most claims go through without issues though.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't received anything. My claim shows 'pending' but Washington ESD hasn't contacted me about any issues. This is so frustrating!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Have you tried calling them?

•I've called dozens of times but can never get through. The lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting an hour.

The waiting week is unpaid, then if approved you'll get benefits for eligible weeks you've filed. Direct deposit usually takes 2-3 business days once payments are released. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday even if your initial claim is still pending.

•Good to know about filing weekly claims right away. I wasn't sure if I should wait for approval first.

•Yeah definitely keep filing weekly claims or you'll lose those weeks permanently. Learned that the hard way.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered Claimyr at claimyr.com - they help you get through to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and redialing.

•Is this legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•It's real - they just handle the calling process for you so you don't have to sit there redialing constantly. Got me connected within 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days.

•I might try this if my claim gets stuck. Thanks for sharing!

ugh the washington esd system is such a mess... took me 6 weeks to get my first payment last year because they kept requesting random documents

Dyllan Nantx
•What kind of documents did they ask for?

•pay stubs, separation notice, id verification... just kept coming one after another with no explanation of why

To clarify the timeline: Week 1 is your waiting week (unpaid), Week 2 onwards are payable if you're eligible and approved. But you must file weekly claims for ALL weeks including the waiting week to establish your claim weeks.

•So if I filed my initial claim this week, I should file my first weekly claim this Sunday?
0 coins
TillyCombatwarrior
•Exactly. The weekly claim filing window opens Saturday evening and you have until the following Saturday to file for that week.

•Wait I thought you had to wait for approval first before filing weekly claims?

TillyCombatwarrior
•No, that's a common misconception. You should file weekly claims immediately to preserve those weeks.

The whole system seems designed to make you give up. Why make it so complicated just to get benefits you paid into???

•I know right? And then they wonder why people don't trust government programs.

•It's frustrating but the process exists to prevent fraud. Most legitimate claims do get processed within a few weeks.

Update: I just checked my account and it says I need to complete ID verification. Is this normal? How long does this usually take?

TillyCombatwarrior
•ID verification is very common now. Upload clear photos of your documents and it usually processes within 3-5 business days.

•Mine took 2 weeks for ID verification! And that was before my actual claim review even started.

Dyllan Nantx
•Ugh, I really hope mine goes faster than that.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit in your account settings immediately. Debit cards can take additional time to arrive and have fees.

Dyllan Nantx
•Good point, I'll set that up now. Thanks!

•The debit card fees are ridiculous. Direct deposit is definitely the way to go.

My cousin got her first payment exactly 3 weeks after filing. But she had a straightforward layoff with no complications.

•That gives me hope! Mine should be straightforward too - clear layoff due to company downsizing.

Just remember you have to actively look for work and keep a job search log. They can audit that at any time and if you don't have it, they'll disqualify you and demand repayment.

•How many job contacts do I need per week?
0 coins
TillyCombatwarrior
•Three job search activities per week minimum. Can include applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records with dates and contact info.

•Thanks, I'll start documenting everything now.

Another vote for Claimyr if anyone needs to reach Washington ESD directly. When my ID verification was stuck for weeks, they got me connected to an agent who resolved it the same day. Worth every penny when you're stressed about bills.

•How much does it cost?

•I don't remember exactly but it was reasonable considering I would have lost way more time calling myself. Check their website for current pricing.

The system was better before covid honestly... now everything takes forever and you can never reach anyone

•Yeah they're still overwhelmed from all the pandemic claims. Hopefully it improves soon.

Make sure your bank account info is correct when you set up direct deposit. I had one wrong digit and it delayed my payment by a week while they sorted it out.

•Good catch, I'll double check all my banking info.

Question - if my claim gets approved, will I get back pay for the weeks I filed while it was pending?
0 coins
TillyCombatwarrior
•Yes, if approved you'll receive payment for all eligible weeks you filed claims for, minus the one waiting week.

Peyton Clarke
•Perfect, that's what I was hoping to hear.

•Have you looked into local food banks or emergency assistance programs while you wait?

•Also try Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD. At this point you need answers about what's holding up your claim.

•I'll try both suggestions, thanks.

The key is patience unfortunately. Most claims do get approved eventually but the system is just slow right now.

One more tip - screenshot everything in your Washington ESD account regularly. I've heard of people losing claim information and having to start over.

Dyllan Nantx
•Great idea, I'll start doing that now.
