How long to start receiving Washington ESD unemployment benefits after filing?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to start receiving benefits. My employer laid me off two weeks ago and I'm getting stressed about bills. The website just says my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give any timeline. Does anyone know what the usual processing time is? I've never filed for unemployment before so I'm not sure what to expect.

The initial processing usually takes 2-4 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. Since you were laid off (not fired), that should help speed things up. You should get a monetary determination letter first showing your weekly benefit amount, then you can start filing weekly claims.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait for that letter before I can file my first weekly claim?

•Yes, you need the monetary determination before you can file weekly claims. But once you get it, you can backdate to when you first became unemployed.

took me 3 weeks when i filed in march, but my friend waited almost 6 weeks because they had to verify her employment history

•Six weeks?? That's terrifying. What made them need to verify her employment?

•she had worked for a small company that didnt report wages correctly or something like that

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible! The phone lines are always busy and when I do get through I get disconnected. Anyone else having this problem?

•I found something called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in like 10 minutes. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Worth checking out if you're stuck in phone hell.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•It basically calls for you and waits in the queue, then connects you when an agent picks up. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

The timeline depends on several factors. If your claim goes into adjudication, it can take much longer - sometimes 6-8 weeks. This happens when there are questions about your job separation, work availability, or eligibility. Simple layoffs usually process faster than separations involving misconduct or voluntary quits.

•What exactly is adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

Marcus Marsh
•Adjudication is when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before approving benefits. Since you were laid off, you probably won't go into adjudication unless there's missing wage information or other documentation issues.

•I've been in adjudication for 5 weeks now and nobody can tell me what's taking so long. The system is broken.

ugh this whole process is so stressful!! I filed 10 days ago and haven't heard anything. How are we supposed to pay rent while waiting weeks for them to process claims?

Kristin Frank
•Exactly! I'm already behind on my car payment and it's only been two weeks since I lost my job.

•I know it's frustrating but try to be patient. The benefits will be backdated to when you first filed, so you won't lose money if it takes a few extra days.

Make sure you're doing your job search activities even while waiting for approval. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they can ask for your log at any time. Don't wait until you start getting benefits to begin tracking this.

Kristin Frank
•Wait, I need to be doing job searches already? Nobody told me that when I filed!

•Yes, the job search requirement starts immediately when you file your claim. You need to log into WorkSourceWA.com and track your activities there.

•This is news to me too. The website is so confusing about what you need to do when.

In my experience, if you don't hear anything after 3 weeks, something is probably wrong. I'd try calling to check on the status. Last time I waited patiently for 5 weeks only to find out they needed additional documentation that they never told me about.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about. But everyone says calling is impossible.

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and actually got through to talk to someone. Turns out my claim was missing some wage information from my previous employer. Would have waited forever if I hadn't called.

The Washington ESD website says most claims are processed within 21 days, but that's only if there are no issues. Reality is different - I've seen people wait 2 months during busy periods.

•Two months?! How is anyone supposed to survive that long without income?

•That's why I always tell people to apply for food assistance and other emergency programs while waiting. Don't just sit there hoping unemployment comes through quickly.

been thru this 3 times over the years - first time took 6 weeks, second time 2 weeks, third time 4 weeks. really depends on their workload and if they need extra info from you

Kristin Frank
•What kind of extra info did they need from you?

Charity Cohan
•second time they wanted pay stubs, third time they needed verification of my last day worked because my employer reported wrong date

Just wanted to add that even after your claim is approved, there can be delays with the actual payment. My first weekly claim took an extra week to show up in my account even though it was approved immediately.

•So even after approval there are more delays? This is getting overwhelming.

•Don't panic! Once the system knows you, payments usually come within 2-3 business days. The first one is always slower.

PROTIP: Set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting a debit card in the mail takes even longer and you can't access your benefits until it arrives.

Kristin Frank
•Good point! I did set up direct deposit when I filed. Hopefully that speeds things up.

•Yes! Direct deposit is the way to go. The debit card option is terrible - fees everywhere and takes forever to get.

I hate to be pessimistic but with how backed up Washington ESD has been, I'd prepare for 4-6 weeks minimum. Better to be pleasantly surprised than constantly disappointed checking your account every day.

•You're probably right. I need to stop obsessing over it and focus on job searching.

•That's the right attitude. Use this time productively and the benefits will come when they come.

•Easier said than done when you have bills due! But yeah, stressing about it won't make it happen faster.

One thing that helped me was calling right at 8am when they open. Still took 45 minutes on hold but at least I got through. That Claimyr thing people mentioned sounds way easier though.

•I've tried calling at 8am but always get the busy signal. Maybe I'll try that Claimyr service.

•The 8am thing worked for me too but you have to call right at 8:00:00. Even 8:01 and you're out of luck.

Just remember that once you do start getting benefits, you have to file your weekly claim every week to keep getting paid. Don't miss a week or you'll have to start over with the whole process.

•When do I file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?
0 coins
Nasira Ibanez
•You can file anytime during the week for the previous week. Most people do it on Sunday for the week that just ended. Don't wait too long though.

The waiting is the worst part. Once you get your first payment everything feels more manageable. Just hang in there and keep checking the website for updates.

•We've all been there. The uncertainty is almost worse than not having the money yet.
