How long does unemployment take to kick in after filing with Washington ESD?

Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and still haven't seen any payments hit my account. My employer laid me off two weeks ago and I'm starting to panic about rent. The website says my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give any timeline. How long should I expect to wait before my first payment? I've been doing the weekly claims like it says but nothing's happening.

It usually takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment after filing. Washington ESD has to verify your employment history and wages first. Did you get any determination letters yet?

No letters yet, just the confirmation that they received my application. Should I be worried?

0 coins

Not yet, but if it goes past 3 weeks definitely call them to check on it.

same boat here, filed 10 days ago and still waiting. this is so stressful when you have bills to pay

0 coins

Right? I wish they'd at least give us a better timeline estimate.

The waiting period can be frustrating but there's a process they have to follow. First payment typically comes 2-4 weeks after filing, depending on how quickly they can verify your information. If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered Claimyr.com - they help you get through to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to call for days but keep getting busy signals.

0 coins

Never heard of Claimyr before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

0 coins

It's legit - they basically call the Washington ESD phone lines for you and connect you when they get through. Saved me hours of redialing.

FOUR WEEKS and counting here!! Washington ESD is absolutely useless. They take forever to process anything and their phone system is a joke. I've called probably 200 times and never gotten through.

0 coins

Four weeks?? That's insane. Did you ever find out what was causing the delay?

0 coins

Still don't know! My account just says 'pending' with no explanation. Completely ridiculous.

0 coins

Make sure you're continuing to file your weekly claims even while waiting for the first payment. If you miss any weeks, it can delay everything even more.

0 coins

Yeah I've been doing those every Sunday. At least that part seems to be working.

0 coins

wait we have to do weekly claims before getting approved? nobody told me that

0 coins

@profile7 Yes, you need to file weekly claims starting the week after you apply, even while your initial claim is being processed.

0 coins

The whole system is set up to discourage people from claiming. They make it as difficult and slow as possible hoping you'll just give up and find work.

0 coins

I mean, isn't the point to encourage people to find work? But I agree the process shouldn't be THIS slow.

0 coins

There's encouraging work and then there's making people homeless while they wait for benefits they're entitled to.

0 coins

For what it's worth, once your claim is approved the payments are usually pretty reliable. The initial waiting period is definitely the worst part of the whole process.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. I just need to get through this first hurdle.

0 coins

Mine took exactly 17 days from filing to first payment. Had to verify my identity with some extra documents but after that it was smooth sailing.

0 coins

Did they contact you about the identity verification or did you have to figure that out yourself?

0 coins

They sent me a letter asking for additional documents. Keep checking your mail and your online account.

0 coins

update: just got my determination letter today! says I'm approved but first payment won't be until next week. so about 3 weeks total for me

0 coins

Congrats! That gives me hope. What did the letter say exactly?

0 coins

basically just that I'm eligible and what my weekly benefit amount will be. nothing too exciting but at least it's progress

0 coins

The key is to not panic if it takes longer than expected. I know that's easier said than done when you're stressed about money, but Washington ESD does eventually come through.

0 coins

Trying to stay positive but it's hard when rent is due soon.

0 coins

I totally understand. Maybe reach out to local assistance programs in the meantime?

0 coins

Just want to add that if anyone is having trouble getting through to Washington ESD customer service, I used Claimyr last month and it worked great. They got me connected within like 20 minutes when I had been trying for weeks on my own.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost?

0 coins

It's worth checking out their site for current info, but honestly it was worth it just to get answers about my claim status.

0 coins

been there done that. the waiting is the absolute worst part. hang in there OP!

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement!

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication that's when you really need to talk to someone. Mine was delayed because of some issue with my previous employer's response.

0 coins

How do you know if it's in adjudication? My account just says 'under review.

0 coins

If it's been more than 2-3 weeks and you haven't heard anything, it might be worth calling to check. That's when Claimyr really comes in handy.

0 coins

I remember my first time filing for unemployment - the uncertainty is awful. But in my experience Washington ESD is generally pretty good about getting payments out once they approve you.

0 coins

That's good to know. I guess I just need to be more patient.

0 coins

Make sure all your contact information is up to date in your account. Sometimes they try to reach you and if they can't, it slows everything down.

0 coins

Good point, I'll double check that right now.

0 coins

UPDATE: Finally got through to someone after using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my claim was stuck because of a clerical error on their end. Should have my payment by Wednesday. Wish I'd known about this service weeks ago!

0 coins

Oh wow, so it really does work! I might have to try that myself.

0 coins

Yeah it was actually pretty simple. Much better than hitting redial 100 times a day.

0 coins

pro tip: keep documenting your job search activities even while you're waiting for approval. you'll need those records later for your weekly claims.

0 coins

Good reminder, I've been keeping track but wasn't sure if I needed to yet.

0 coins

The waiting period sucks but at least Washington state has pretty decent unemployment benefits compared to other places. Once it kicks in you should be okay.

0 coins

True, I know I'm lucky to be in a state with good benefits. Just need to get there first!

0 coins

fingers crossed for you OP! the first payment is always the scariest wait but it gets easier after that

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the advice and support. This thread has been really helpful!

0 coins

Hope this thread helps other people going through the same thing. The initial waiting period is stressful but Washington ESD does process claims fairly reliably once you get through the queue.

Definitely going to bookmark this for reference. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to share their experiences.
