When will I receive my Washington ESD unemployment benefits after filing?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD's website last Tuesday and I'm wondering when will i receive my unemployment payment? My claim status shows as 'under review' but there's no timeline given. I've been laid off from my retail job and really need to know when to expect the first payment. Has anyone recently filed and can tell me how long it took? I'm getting worried about rent next week.

It usually takes 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process a new claim, assuming there are no issues. You should get a determination letter first, then if approved you can start filing weekly claims. The first payment typically comes about a week after your first weekly claim is processed.

•Thanks! So I need to wait for the determination letter before I can even file weekly claims?

Lucas Lindsey
•Exactly. You can't file weekly claims until your monetary determination is complete and you're approved.

mine took forever because it went into adjudication... ended up being like 6 weeks before i saw any money

Emma Olsen
•Oh no, what caused the adjudication? I'm hoping mine doesn't get held up like that.

•something about my previous employer not responding to their request for information. was a nightmare trying to get anyone at Washington ESD on the phone to explain what was happening

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone to check on your claim status, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to unemployment agents without waiting on hold for hours. There's a helpful video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Made a huge difference when I needed to talk to someone about my claim.

•Interesting, how does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

Austin Leonard
•They handle the calling process and connect you directly with an agent when one becomes available. Much better than sitting on hold trying to get through yourself.

•sounds too good to be true but honestly anything is better than the current system

The whole process is designed to delay payments as long as possible. Washington ESD is notorious for finding reasons to hold up claims. Even simple cases can take weeks longer than they should.

•That's discouraging to hear. I was hoping it would be more straightforward since I was clearly laid off through no fault of my own.

•Don't let the negativity get to you. Many claims do process normally within the expected timeframe. The horror stories get more attention than the routine approvals.

just checking in to say me too! filed last week and anxiously waiting. this whole thing is so stressful when you're already dealing with losing your job

Emma Olsen
•Exactly! The uncertainty makes everything worse. Hope yours goes through quickly.

While you're waiting, make sure you're keeping track of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week once you start filing weekly claims. Better to start documenting now even if you haven't been approved yet.

•Good point. Do I need to register with WorkSource Washington for that?
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•Yes, you'll need to register with WorkSourceWA and maintain an active job search profile. It's one of the ongoing requirements.

Isla Fischer
•wait, is it 3 job contacts per week? I thought it was more than that
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•It's 3 per week for most people, but can be higher in certain circumstances or if you're in a specific program.

honestly the whole system is a mess. took me calling probably 200 times over 2 weeks just to get someone who could tell me why my claim was stuck

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr are so valuable. They eliminate all that wasted time trying to get through.

Update: Just checked my account and I got a message saying they need additional information about my separation from employment. My employer apparently hasn't responded to their request yet. This is so frustrating!
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•That's pretty common. Employers have 10 days to respond to separation requests. If they don't respond, Washington ESD will usually proceed with the information they have.

Abigail Spencer
•And this is exactly how they delay claims unnecessarily. Your employer probably won't respond and you'll wait the full 10 days for nothing.
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•So does this mean another 10 days on top of the 2-3 weeks processing time?
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•It can add to the timeline, yes. But once they get the employer response or the deadline passes, your claim should move forward.

same boat here, filed 2 weeks ago and still nothing. starting to panic about bills

•At least I'm not alone in this. The waiting is the worst part.

I had a friend who got approved really quickly, like within a week. But then her first payment was delayed because she missed filing her first weekly claim on time. Make sure you don't miss that deadline once you're approved!

Emma Olsen
•Good to know! How do you know when to file the first weekly claim?
0 coins
Isla Fischer
•You'll get instructions with your determination letter. Usually you can start filing weekly claims right after you're approved.

One thing to remember is that even when your first payment comes through, it might be less than your full weekly benefit amount if you filed mid-week. The first payment is often prorated for partial weeks.
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•That makes sense. I filed on a Tuesday so I guess that first week would be partial.

If you end up needing to contact Washington ESD about your claim status or any delays, definitely consider using Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it really does work. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through on my own.

•I might have to look into that if this employer response thing drags on much longer.

•How much does something like that cost though?

Austin Leonard
•It's worth checking out their site for current info. For me the value was definitely there given how much time it saved.

The whole 'waiting for employer response' thing is such BS. They know most employers won't respond promptly but they use it as an excuse to delay payments anyway.

•It does seem like there should be a faster way to handle clear-cut layoffs.

•The process exists to prevent fraud and ensure accurate benefit payments. While it can be frustrating, it serves an important purpose.

just want to echo what others said about keeping track of job search stuff. they will ask for it eventually and if you dont have documentation you can get in trouble

Another update: My employer finally responded and my claim got approved! Got the determination letter today. Weekly benefit amount is $520 and I can start filing weekly claims this Sunday. Thanks everyone for the advice and support!

•Great news! Make sure to file that first weekly claim on time. You should see your first payment within a few days after filing.

•Awesome, gives me hope for mine! How long did the whole process end up taking?
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•About 3 weeks total from initial filing to approval. Not too bad considering the employer delay.

Anita George
•congrats! hoping mine moves along soon too

That's great! $520 weekly is a decent amount. Don't forget about the taxes - you can have them withheld automatically or pay quarterly.

Emma Olsen
•Good point about taxes. I'll probably have them withheld to avoid a big bill later.

Glad it worked out without needing to contact Washington ESD directly! But for anyone else reading this who does need to reach them, Claimyr is still the best option I've found for actually getting through to speak with someone.

Emma Olsen
•I'll definitely keep that in mind if any issues come up with my weekly claims. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Final reminder for the OP and anyone else newly approved - remember to report any work or income when you file your weekly claims, even small amounts. Failure to report income can result in overpayment issues later.

•Definitely will do. Thanks for all the guidance throughout this process!
