How long before Washington ESD unemployment benefits start after filing?
I just submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website last Thursday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes before you actually start receiving payments. My last day of work was two weeks ago and I'm already behind on rent. The website says my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give any timeline. Has anyone recently gone through this process? How long did you wait before your first payment came through?

The waiting period can vary a lot depending on your situation. Generally, if your claim is straightforward with no red flags, you might see your first payment within 2-3 weeks after filing. But if there are any issues that need adjudication - like questions about why you left your job or if you had any other income - it can take much longer.

•What kind of red flags are you talking about? I was laid off due to company downsizing, so I thought that would be pretty clear cut.

•Layoffs are usually processed faster since there's no question about eligibility. You should be in the 2-3 week range unless they need to verify your work history or wages.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten anything! My claim shows 'adjudication in progress' and I can't get through to anyone on the phone. The Washington ESD phone lines are always busy.

•Have you tried calling first thing in the morning? I usually call right at 8am when they open.

•Yes! I've been calling every morning for a week straight. Either busy signal or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, you might want to check out Claimyr. It's a service that helps people get through to unemployment offices when the phone lines are swamped. I used it last month when my claim got stuck and couldn't reach anyone for weeks. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent is available.

•Is this legit? I've never heard of anything like that before.

•Yeah it's real. Check out claimyr.com - they specialize in helping people reach unemployment offices. Way better than spending hours trying to get through yourself.

•Interesting, I might need this if my claim gets delayed. Thanks for sharing!

The whole system is completely broken!! I've been waiting 5 WEEKS for my first payment and nobody can tell me what's going on. Meanwhile my savings are gone and I'm about to lose my apartment. This is ridiculous!

•I understand your frustration, but there are usually specific reasons for delays. Have you checked your online account to see if there are any pending issues that need to be resolved?

•My account just says 'under review' with no details. No pending issues, no requests for information, nothing!

Mine took exactly 16 days from filing to first payment hitting my account. No issues, straightforward layoff situation. Just had to be patient and keep filing my weekly claims even though I wasn't getting paid yet.

•That's reassuring to hear! Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

•Just kept filing weekly and made sure to do my job search activities. The payment showed up on a Wednesday if I remember right.

Don't forget you have to serve a waiting week too. Even if your claim gets approved right away, you won't get paid for your first week.

•Wait, what's a waiting week? Nobody told me about that when I filed.

•It's basically an unpaid week at the beginning of your claim. You file for it but don't get benefits for that first week. It's been that way for years.

•Actually, Washington eliminated the waiting week a few years ago. You should get paid for all eligible weeks including your first one.

The key thing is to keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't been approved yet. If you miss filing a week, you could lose benefits for that week even after you get approved.

•Good to know! I've been filing every Sunday like it told me to.

•Perfect, that's exactly what you should be doing. Keep that up until you start getting payments.

My experience was similar to others - about 2.5 weeks for my first payment. But I had a friend whose claim took 6 weeks because they needed to verify her previous employer information. It really depends on your specific situation.

•That's a huge range! I hope mine doesn't take 6 weeks.

•Yours should be faster since layoffs are usually pretty straightforward to process.

Update: I finally got through to someone using that Claimyr service mentioned earlier. Turns out there was an issue with my Social Security number not matching their records exactly. The agent was able to fix it right away and said my payments should start next week. Would have taken forever to figure that out on my own!

•Glad it worked out for you! Those kinds of simple issues can hold up claims for months if you can't reach someone to fix them.

•That's great news! I'll definitely keep Claimyr in mind if I run into any issues with my claim.

The Washington ESD website says most claims are processed within 21 days, but that's just for the initial determination. Payment timing can be different depending on your bank and how they process deposits.

•21 days seems like a long time when you're not getting any income. I guess I just have to be patient.

•I know it's tough, but that's just how the system works. At least once it starts, the payments are usually pretty reliable.

Make sure you're checking your mail too, not just your online account. Sometimes they send important notices that you need to respond to, and if you miss them it can delay everything.

•Good point, I'll keep an eye out for any mail from Washington ESD.

I remember when I first filed, I was so anxious about the timing. Ended up getting my first payment exactly 18 days after I submitted my initial claim. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, especially when you're worried about bills.

•18 days isn't too bad. I'm hoping for something similar. The uncertainty is definitely stressful.

•Hang in there! Once the payments start coming, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you were eligible, so you won't lose any money from the delay.

Has anyone had issues with the direct deposit setup? I'm worried my banking information might not have gone through correctly.

•You can check your payment method in your online account. If there's an issue with your banking info, it should show up there.

•Thanks, I'll double-check that right now.

Don't stress too much about the timeline. I know it's hard when money's tight, but Washington ESD is generally pretty good about processing claims. The system just takes time to verify everything.

One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts through my bank so I'd know immediately when the deposit came through. Saved me from obsessively checking my account balance every day.

My sister's been waiting almost a month now, but her situation is complicated because she had multiple part-time jobs. Simple layoff situations like yours usually go much faster.

•Yeah, I only had one employer so hopefully that makes things easier for them to process.

UPDATE: Finally got my first payment today! Took exactly 4 weeks from when I filed, but I got backpay for all the weeks I was waiting. Still frustrating how long it took, but at least the money is there now.

For what it's worth, I've helped several friends navigate the Washington ESD system and the timing has been all over the place lately. Some get paid in 2 weeks, others wait over a month. But everyone eventually gets their benefits if they're eligible.

Keep your chin up! The waiting period is definitely nerve-wracking, but once things get rolling, you'll be glad you stuck with it. Washington ESD benefits have really helped me get back on my feet during job searches.
