How long before unemployment is approved in Washington ESD system?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My status just says 'under review' but doesn't give me any timeframe. I've been laid off from my retail job and really need to know when I can expect my first payment. How long did it take for your claims to get approved? I'm starting to stress about rent coming up next week.

The processing time really depends on your situation. If your claim is straightforward with no complications, Washington ESD typically processes it within 2-3 weeks. But if there are any issues that need adjudication - like questions about why you left your job or earnings verification - it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

•What kind of issues would cause delays? I was laid off due to store closure so I thought that would be pretty clear cut.

•Store closure should be straightforward, but sometimes they need to verify your earnings history with your employer or if there are any discrepancies in your work history. Did you work anywhere else in the past 18 months?

Been waiting 3 weeks myself and getting really frustrated. Called Washington ESD like 50 times and can never get through to a human. The automated system just tells me to keep waiting.

•I had the same issue trying to reach someone at Washington ESD. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Did they charge you anything crazy?

•They focus on the value of actually getting through rather than the cost. For me it was worth it just to get my questions answered instead of calling 100 times.

Just got approved last week after waiting 4 weeks. No issues with my claim but it still took forever. The first payment should come within a few days of approval though, so that's good news.

•Four weeks?? That's so long. Did you get backpay for all the weeks you waited?

Zara Mirza
•Yes, they paid me for all the weeks I was eligible from when I first filed. So even though it took a month, I got the full amount.

The system is totally broken. I waited 6 weeks and then they said I needed to provide more documentation. Would have been nice if they told me that from the beginning instead of just letting me wait.

•What documentation did they ask for? I want to make sure I have everything ready just in case.

•They wanted pay stubs from my last employer and some form about my separation. Apparently my employer hadn't responded to their request for information.

•Yeah I've been doing the weekly claims. Just nerve wracking not knowing when it will be approved.

One thing to remember is that Washington ESD has been dealing with higher than normal claim volumes even post-pandemic. They're still catching up on processing times. The good news is that once approved, you'll get backpay for all eligible weeks.

•Higher volumes because the economy is still rough or just because they're understaffed?

NeonNebula
•Both really. There have been some layoffs in tech and retail sectors, plus they're still rebuilding their staffing after the pandemic surge.

Check your SecureAccess Washington account regularly. Sometimes they post updates or requests for information there that you might miss if you're only checking the main Washington ESD site.

•Good tip, I'll start checking that daily. Thanks!

If you're really concerned about the timeline, I'd suggest trying to get through to speak with someone at Washington ESD directly. I used Claimyr to get connected to an agent who was able to tell me exactly where my claim stood in the process. Much better than just wondering and waiting.

•How does that service work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

Sean Kelly
•They handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saves you from spending hours trying to get through yourself.

I'm at 5 weeks now and still pending. Starting to panic about money. Anyone know if there's anything I can do to speed this up?

NeonNebula
•Unfortunately there's no way to speed up the actual processing, but you can make sure you haven't missed any requests for information. Check your online account and any mail from Washington ESD carefully.

•I've checked everything multiple times. Just seems like they're taking forever with no explanation.

The waiting is the worst part. I was approved after 3.5 weeks but it felt like forever when you're stressed about bills.

•Exactly! The uncertainty is killing me. At least if they gave better estimates I could plan better.

Make sure you're continuing to look for work and keeping track of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires that you be actively searching and you'll need to report your activities when you start certifying for benefits.

•Good reminder. I've been applying places but haven't been keeping detailed records. Should probably start doing that.

QuantumQuester
•Definitely keep records. You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and be able to document them.

•Congrats! That gives me hope. Did you get any notice before the approval or did it just change status?

The whole system needs an overhaul. It shouldn't take a month to approve a simple unemployment claim. People have bills to pay and families to feed.

•I agree it's frustrating, but they do have to verify everything to prevent fraud. Still, they could communicate better about timelines.

From what I've seen, most straightforward claims get approved in the 2-4 week range. If you're still waiting after 4 weeks, it's worth trying to contact Washington ESD to see if there are any issues. Some people have had success using calling services to get through to an agent.

Diego Chavez
•I keep seeing people mention these calling services. Might have to try that if I don't hear something soon.

•Claimyr seems to be the main one people use successfully. They specialize in getting through to Washington ESD agents.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims while waiting. Even if your initial claim isn't approved yet, you need to keep certifying for each week to be eligible for backpay.

Diego Chavez
•Yeah I've been doing that. It feels weird filing for weeks when I don't even know if I'm approved yet.

Mei Chen
•I know it feels strange but it's required. You can't go back and claim weeks you didn't file for.

been through this process 3 times over the years and it's always taken 3-4 weeks minimum. just part of the process unfortunately

•Three times? That's rough. At least you know what to expect now.

Try not to stress too much. I know it's easier said than done when money is tight, but most people do get approved eventually. Keep doing everything you're supposed to do and it will work out.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, I'd definitely recommend trying Claimyr. I was able to get answers about my pending claim that I never could have gotten through the regular phone system. The peace of mind was worth it.

Diego Chavez
•I think I'm going to try that. Better than sitting here wondering what's happening with my claim.

•Yeah, they were able to tell me exactly what stage my claim was in and what to expect next. Much better than just guessing.
