How long does it take for unemployment claim to process through Washington ESD?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear anything back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any correspondence yet. I'm starting to get worried because I need to pay rent next week. For those who have been through this process recently, how long should I expect to wait before my claim gets processed? I worked in retail management for 3 years before getting laid off due to store closure, so I don't think there should be any complications with my work history.

Processing times vary a lot depending on your situation. Simple claims with no issues usually take 2-3 weeks from submission to first payment. Since you mentioned retail management, they'll likely need to verify your wages with your former employer which can add some time.

•Thanks for the info. Do you know if there's a way to check what specifically they're reviewing?

•You can log into your eServices account and check for any pending issues or requests for additional information. Sometimes they need extra documentation.

Mine took forever - almost 5 weeks before I got my first payment. The Washington ESD phone lines are impossible to get through to check on status too.

•5 weeks?? That's crazy long. Did they ever explain why it took so much time?

•They said it was wage verification issues but never gave me details. Just had to wait it out unfortunately.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone to check your claim status, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helps people get through to unemployment agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your processing delays.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah it worked for me when I was stuck in adjudication limbo. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Sounds too good to be true honestly. The phone system is broken for everyone, how would some service fix that?

The 'under review' status usually means they're doing the standard wage and work history verification. This is normal for all new claims. If there were red flags they would have contacted you by now for additional information.

•That's reassuring to hear. I was worried something was wrong with my application.

•My claim showed under review for 3 weeks then suddenly switched to approved with all my back payments. Just be patient.

ARE YOU FILING YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS?? This is super important - you need to file every week even while your initial claim is processing or you'll lose those weeks of benefits!!!

•Yes I've been filing weekly claims through eServices. The system lets me file them even though my main claim isn't approved yet.

•Good! A lot of people miss this and then wonder why they don't get back pay for those weeks.

•Wait, you can file weekly claims before your initial claim is approved? I didn't know that.

Store closures are actually pretty straightforward for Washington ESD to process since the reason for separation is clear-cut. No misconduct or voluntary quit issues to investigate. Your timeline sounds normal for that type of claim.

•That makes me feel better. I was worried they'd question why I didn't transfer to another store location.

•Nah, if the whole store closed that's considered involuntary separation. You're good on that front.

•Have you tried calling? I know the lines are busy but sometimes you can get through early morning.

•tried calling like 50 times yesterday just busy signals and hang ups

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it handles the calling hassle for you so you don't have to spend all day redialing.

The system is backed up right now. I work at a temp agency and we've had tons of people laid off recently, everyone's filing claims at the same time. Just creates processing delays across the board.

•That makes sense. I didn't realize there was a surge in claims happening.

•Yeah the job market has been rough lately. Lots of retail and service industry layoffs.

Mine processed in exactly 2 weeks and 3 days. Filed on a Tuesday, got approved on the following Thursday. No issues though - straightforward layoff situation.

•That gives me hope! Did you get back pay for all the weeks you filed while waiting?

Makayla Shoemaker
•Yep, got paid for every week I had filed claims for. Just showed up as one big deposit.

Check your mail and email regularly. Sometimes Washington ESD sends requests for additional info that you might miss. If you don't respond quickly it can delay your claim even more.

•I've been checking both daily. Haven't gotten any requests for additional information yet.

•Good habit to have. The requests often have short deadlines so you want to catch them right away.

My friend used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and said it was a lifesaver. Got connected to an actual person at Washington ESD within like 20 minutes instead of calling for days.

•How much does it cost though? Probably expensive.

Anita George
•I didn't ask about cost but she said it was worth it to get answers about her delayed claim.

The fact that you can still file weekly claims is a good sign. If there were major problems with your application they would have blocked you from filing those.

•I hadn't thought about it that way. That does seem like a positive indicator.

Just want to add - make sure you're doing your job search activities and logging them. Even while your claim is processing you need to be meeting the work search requirements.

•Yes I've been applying to jobs and keeping track in WorkSourceWA. Wasn't sure if I needed to do that before approval.

Logan Chiang
•Better safe than sorry. They can ask for your job search log going back to when you started filing weekly claims.

•Wait, we have to log job searches in WorkSourceWA? I thought just applying was enough.

Don't panic yet. 10 days is still pretty normal processing time, especially with store closure layoffs since they verify everything with the employer. Give it another week before worrying.

•Thanks for the reassurance. I'll try to be more patient.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. Washington ESD typically processes straightforward layoff claims within 14-21 business days. Store closures are considered low-risk claims so yours should be on the faster end.

•That's really helpful to know from someone who sees these regularly. I feel much better now.

•Do you know what causes some claims to take longer than others?

•Usually it's disputed separations, wage discrepancies, or when someone has worked in multiple states recently. Clean layoffs with clear documentation move fastest.

Keep filing those weekly claims and hang in there. The waiting is the worst part but once it processes you'll get all your back pay at once.

Just to follow up on the Claimyr service I mentioned earlier - I used it when I was stuck waiting for adjudication and it really helped me get through to speak with someone who could explain what was causing my delay. Sometimes just getting that direct contact makes all the difference in understanding your claim status.

•I might look into that if I don't hear anything by next week. Thanks for the suggestion.

•The video demo made it look pretty straightforward. Might be worth trying if you're stuck.

Just remember that even after your claim gets approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before your first payment. So factor that into your timeline expectations.

Kylo Ren
•Good point. So even after approval I'm looking at another week before money comes in.

Brooklyn Knight
•Exactly. It's called the waiting week and everyone has to serve it for their first unemployment claim.

Based on everything I've read here, it sounds like your timeline is totally normal. Retail layoffs are pretty common and Washington ESD knows how to process them efficiently. You should hear something soon.
