When will my unemployment start after filing with Washington ESD?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear anything back. My claim shows as 'under review' when I log into my account but there's no timeline given. I lost my job at a retail chain in Spokane and I really need to know when my benefits will actually start coming in. I've been applying for jobs but nothing yet. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD usually takes to process new claims? I'm getting really anxious about paying rent next month.

It typically takes 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process initial claims, but it can be longer if they need additional information or if your case requires adjudication. Have you received any correspondence asking for documents or clarification on your separation from your employer?

•No, I haven't gotten any letters or emails asking for more info. My employer said they would confirm my termination was due to lack of work, not performance issues.

•That's good - voluntary quit or misconduct cases take much longer. Keep checking your account daily for any updates or requests for information.

Same boat here! Filed 2 weeks ago and still nothing. The waiting is killing me financially.

•Glad I'm not the only one. This process is way more stressful than I expected when you're already worried about money.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. I was spending hours trying to call and getting nowhere, but this actually got me through to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim.

•Interesting, I haven't heard of that before. Did they charge you a lot to use it?

•I'd rather not get into pricing details, but it was worth it for me to finally talk to someone who could give me real answers about my claim timeline.

•Sounds too good to be true tbh. I'll stick with calling the regular number until I can get through.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 3 WEEKS and every time I call I get disconnected after an hour on hold. How are we supposed to survive while they take their sweet time???

•I feel your frustration but getting angry won't speed up the process unfortunately.

•Easy for you to say when you're not behind on your car payment!

For what it's worth, once your claim is approved, you'll receive benefits retroactive to your filing date. So even though you're waiting now, you won't lose those weeks of benefits if everything goes through properly.

•That's reassuring to know. I was worried I'd lose out on money for these weeks of waiting.

•Wait, is this true? I thought you only got paid from when they approve it, not from when you filed?

Quinn Herbert
•No, benefits are retroactive to your claim filing date as long as you continue filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval.

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even though you haven't been approved yet! I made that mistake and had to appeal to get those weeks back.

•Yes, I've been doing that. The system lets me file them even though my claim is still pending review.

•Good! That was my biggest mistake - I thought I should wait until approval to start filing weekly claims.

honestly the phone system is useless, i gave up trying to call after getting hung up on like 20 times

•That's exactly why I ended up trying Claimyr - the regular phone system was just impossible to get through.

Quick update - I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD today! They said my claim is in the final review stage and should be processed within the next few days. There's hope!

•That's great news! How long did it take you to get through on the phone?

Salim Nasir
•About 2 hours of calling and being on hold, but I finally got someone knowledgeable.

•2 hours?? That's insane that we have to spend that much time just to get basic information about our own claims.

I work in HR and see this all the time - Washington ESD is just overwhelmed right now. The 2-3 week timeframe is pretty standard unless there are complications with your work history or reason for separation.

•Thanks for the professional perspective. It helps to know this is normal processing time.

•No problem. The key is making sure you keep filing weekly claims and respond immediately to any requests for information.

Does anyone know if the job search requirements start right away or only after your claim is approved? I've been applying for jobs but wasn't sure if I need to log them yet.

Quinn Herbert
•You should start logging job search activities right away, even while your claim is pending. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week once benefits begin.

•Good to know, I'll start keeping better track of my applications.

Update: I just checked my account and there's a new message saying they need verification of my identity. I guess that's what's been holding things up. At least now I know what the delay is about!

•Identity verification is very common and usually just requires uploading a photo of your driver's license and Social Security card. Should move quickly once you submit those.

•Same thing happened to me - took about 3 days after I uploaded my documents for the claim to get approved.

•I'll upload everything today. Thanks for letting me know it moves fast after that step!

The identity verification requirement is new this year I think? My friend filed last year and didn't have to do that step.

•It's been implemented more widely to prevent fraud. Most states are doing it now, not just Washington.

For anyone still having trouble getting answers about their claim status, I really can't recommend Claimyr enough. It saved me so much time and stress compared to trying to call on my own.

•I'm curious about this too. Did they actually help you resolve issues or just get you connected to an agent?
0 coins
Hazel Garcia
•They get you connected to a real Washington ESD agent who can look at your specific claim and explain exactly what's happening. Much better than generic information online.

Just wanted to add that even though the waiting is stressful, Washington ESD is generally pretty good about processing straightforward claims. Hang in there!

Still nothing on my end after 3+ weeks. This is ridiculous. How are people supposed to pay bills while waiting indefinitely?

Quinn Herbert
•Have you checked if there are any pending issues or requests for information in your account? Sometimes people miss notifications.

Geoff Richards
•I check every day. Status just says 'under review' with no other details.

•This might be a good case for using Claimyr to get through to someone who can actually look at your claim and tell you what's causing the delay.

Pro tip: if you need immediate help with bills while waiting, check with local food banks and utility assistance programs. Many have emergency programs for people waiting on unemployment.

Final update - my claim was approved today! Benefits start next week and I'll get paid for all the weeks I was waiting. Total time was about 3 weeks from filing to approval.

For anyone keeping track, my timeline was: Filed on a Tuesday, got identity verification request the following Monday, uploaded documents Wednesday, claim approved the next Tuesday. So about 2.5 weeks total.

Remember that if your claim gets denied for any reason, you have the right to appeal. Don't give up if the initial decision isn't what you expected.
