When will I get my unemployment benefits - Washington ESD timeline confusion
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm getting really anxious about when I'll actually see any money. My claim status just says 'pending' and I've been filing my weekly claims like they told me to. I lost my job at a retail store and really need these benefits to cover rent next week. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to process claims? I'm seeing different timelines online and getting confused about what to expect.

The typical processing time for Washington ESD is usually 2-3 weeks from when you first file, but it can take longer if there are any issues with your claim that need adjudication. Since you filed 10 days ago, you're probably getting close to hearing something. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - that's really important.

•Thanks! I've been doing the weekly claims religiously. Should I be worried that it still says pending after 10 days?

Ingrid Larsson
•Not necessarily - 10 days isn't unusual, especially if they're verifying your employment history or if there's any question about why you left your job.

Mine took almost 4 weeks back in September. Washington ESD seems really backed up lately. The waiting is the worst part because you have no idea what's happening behind the scenes.

•4 weeks?! That's terrifying. Did you ever find out why it took so long?

•They never really explained it. Just said they had to verify some information with my previous employer.

If you're getting anxious about the timeline, I'd suggest trying to call Washington ESD directly to check on your claim status. I know their phone lines are busy, but sometimes they can give you more specific information about any hold-ups. I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to ESD agents faster - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you can't get through on your own.

•I've tried calling but always get the busy signal or get disconnected. I'll check out that Claimyr thing - anything to get some answers!

•Never heard of Claimyr but honestly if it helps get through to someone at ESD I'm interested. Their phone system is absolutely terrible.

The 'pending' status usually means they're still processing your initial claim. Once it's approved, you should get a determination letter and your first payment should come within a few days after that. Make sure your bank account info is correct in your profile.

•I double-checked my bank info and it looks right. So I should get some kind of letter before the money shows up?

•Yes, you'll get a monetary determination letter that tells you your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for.

•That's exactly what I'm doing! Refreshing the page constantly like it's going to magically change.

One thing to keep in mind - even after your claim is approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you get your first payment. So if you filed weekly claims for weeks 1, 2, and 3, you'd typically get paid for weeks 2 and 3 first, then week 1 gets paid later.

•Wait, what? There's a waiting period? Nobody told me about that when I filed.

•Yeah, it's called the waiting week. It's a standard thing with unemployment benefits. You'll eventually get paid for it, just not right away.

•I think they changed that waiting week rule during COVID but I'm not sure if it's still in effect or not?

Actually, the waiting week was eliminated in Washington during the pandemic and I believe it's still eliminated. So you should get paid for all eligible weeks without that delay.

•OK that's a relief! So many conflicting rules and information out there.

•Thanks for the correction - you're right, I was thinking of the old rules.

I'm in the same boat as you - filed 8 days ago and still pending. This is my first time ever filing for unemployment and I have no idea what's normal. The whole process is confusing.

•At least I'm not alone! It's definitely nerve-wracking when you need the money.

•For both of you first-timers, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier might be helpful just to get someone on the phone who can walk you through what to expect with your specific claims.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE. I've been trying to get through to someone for THREE WEEKS about my claim and it's like they don't want to help anyone. How is this acceptable?

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of happening to me. Did you ever get it resolved?

•Still working on it. Might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned because I'm desperate at this point.

Pro tip: if your claim gets stuck in adjudication, that's when the waiting can really drag on. Adjudication happens when there's some question about your eligibility - like if you quit vs. were laid off, or if there's conflicting information about your work history.

Tyrone Johnson
•How would I know if it's in adjudication? My status just says pending.

Carlos Mendoza
•Usually it will specifically say 'adjudication in progress' if that's the case. Plain 'pending' is more likely just normal processing.

I remember when I first filed it felt like forever but looking back it was only about 2.5 weeks total. The anxiety makes it feel so much longer than it actually is.

•That's probably exactly what's happening to me. Every day feels like a week when you're waiting for money you need.

Since you mentioned you worked retail, make sure Washington ESD has correct information about your hours and wages. Sometimes retail workers have irregular schedules that can slow down the verification process.

Tyrone Johnson
•My hours were pretty consistent but I did work at two different locations for the same company. Could that complicate things?
0 coins
Ingrid Larsson
•It shouldn't, as long as it's the same employer. They'll just verify your total wages from all locations.

Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what! Even if your initial claim is still pending, you need to keep filing or you'll lose those weeks.

•Yes, I'm definitely keeping up with the weekly claims. That seems to be the one thing everyone agrees on.

Update on the Claimyr service - I used it again last week to check on a different issue and got through to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes. Way better than the hours I used to spend trying to call on my own. Definitely worth it when you need actual answers about your claim status.

•That's really encouraging! I think I'm going to try it if I don't hear something by early next week.

•Just signed up for Claimyr myself. If it actually works I'll be amazed because nothing else has.

Just wanted to add that even though the waiting is stressful, Washington ESD will backpay you for all the weeks you were eligible once your claim is approved. So you won't lose money for the time it took to process.

Tyrone Johnson
•That's good to know! I was worried I'd somehow lose those first couple weeks.

i think the key is just to be patient (easier said than done i know) and keep doing everything you're supposed to do. file weekly claims, respond to any requests for info, and eventually it will go through.

Tyrone Johnson
•You're right. I just need to trust the process and try not to stress too much about things outside my control.

One last thing - once your claim is approved and you start getting payments, they usually come on the same day each week. Most people get them on Wednesday or Thursday, but it can vary.

•Good to know! I'll try to be patient and just keep checking my account. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information.

UPDATE: That Claimyr service actually worked! Got through to someone at ESD and found out my claim was just in normal processing, should be approved within the next few days. Finally some peace of mind.
