How long to get unemployment benefits approved by Washington ESD?
I submitted my unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved and start receiving benefits. My employer laid me off due to budget cuts and I've been out of work for 2 weeks now. I'm getting really anxious about my bills piling up. I did the initial application and have been filing my weekly claims but my account still shows 'pending' status. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD usually takes to process new claims? I'm worried I did something wrong or missed a step.

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process a new unemployment claim if there are no issues. Since you filed 10 days ago, you're probably getting close. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - that's important for when they do approve you.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I have been doing my weekly claims so hopefully I'm on the right track.

•yeah definitely keep doing the weekly claims or you'll miss out on weeks of benefits

Mine took almost 4 weeks because they had to verify my work history with my previous employer. If your case goes into adjudication it can take longer. Check if there are any outstanding issues in your account that need attention.

•How do I check for outstanding issues? I don't see anything obvious in my account.

•Look for any messages or alerts in your eServices account. Sometimes they send you tasks to complete that you might miss.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to an actual agent. They have a system that calls for you and gets you through the phone queue. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. It was a lifesaver when I needed to talk to someone about my adjudication delay.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to Washington ESD.

•I get the frustration, but honestly it saved me so much time and stress. Worth checking out their site for the details.

•I might try this, I've been calling for days and can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD.

The whole system is ridiculous. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process claims. Meanwhile people are struggling to pay rent and buy groceries. Washington ESD needs to hire more staff or fix their broken system.

•totally agree, it's like they don't realize people need this money to survive

•I understand the frustration but they did improve processing times a lot compared to 2020-2021. It used to be much worse.

just be patient, mine took 3 weeks but then I got all the back pay at once which was nice

Isaac Wright
•That's good to know about the back pay. I was worried I'd lose those first couple weeks.

•Yeah as long as you file your weekly claims you'll get paid for all the weeks you were eligible once approved.

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires you to search for work and keep a log of your job search efforts. If you're not doing that it could delay your benefits or cause issues later.

Isaac Wright
•How many job searches do I need to do per week? I've been applying to a few jobs but wasn't keeping a formal log.

Mikayla Brown
•You need to do 3 job search activities per week and keep records. Could be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Better start documenting now.

•They usually don't audit job search logs unless there's a specific reason, but you should still do it properly.

I'm in the same boat - filed 2 weeks ago and still pending. This waiting is torture when you have bills to pay. At least we're not alone in this situation.

•It really is stressful. Hope yours gets approved soon too.

•Hang in there everyone, it does eventually get processed. I know the waiting sucks.

When I was laid off last year, my Washington ESD claim took exactly 3 weeks and 2 days to get approved. No issues, just their normal processing time. I remember being super anxious too but then one day I just got the approval notice and the first payment hit my account the next day.

Isaac Wright
•That gives me hope! Did you get an email when it was approved or did you just have to keep checking your account?

•I got both an email notification and a letter in the mail. The email came first though.

Pro tip: if your claim goes past 3 weeks without any communication, that's when you should definitely try to call Washington ESD to see what's up. Sometimes there are issues they don't tell you about until you ask.

•Good advice. I had to call when mine hit 4 weeks and found out they needed additional documentation I didn't know about.

•This is where that Claimyr service might come in handy - actually getting through to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

Don't panic yet - 10 days is still pretty normal. I work in HR and have helped several employees through this process. Washington ESD has been pretty consistent with 2-3 week processing times for straightforward layoff cases like yours.

•Thanks for the professional perspective. That's reassuring to hear from someone who sees this regularly.

•Do you know if there's anything that commonly causes delays in processing?

Katherine Hunter
•Usually it's employment verification issues, questions about the reason for separation, or incomplete information on the application.

I used Claimyr twice when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my claim status. First time was to check on processing, second time was about a payment issue. Both times they got me connected within a reasonable time instead of me spending hours trying to call. Really took the stress out of it.

•I might have to try this too. I've been calling every day for a week with no luck getting through.

The key thing is not to stress too much about it. I know easier said than done when you need the money, but Washington ESD does process claims pretty reliably. Just keep filing your weekly claims and be patient for a few more days.

One thing that helped me was setting up direct deposit if you haven't already. Once your claim is approved, you'll get paid faster than waiting for a check in the mail.

Isaac Wright
•Good point! I did set up direct deposit when I filed so hopefully that will speed things up once I'm approved.

Alfredo Lugo
•Yeah direct deposit usually hits within 1-2 business days after they process the payment.

I'm sure this has been asked before but does anyone know if the timing is different if you were fired vs laid off? I was let go for performance reasons and wondering if that makes my claim take longer to process.
0 coins
Kaitlyn Jenkins
•Performance-related terminations can sometimes trigger adjudication which would take longer. They have to determine if you were fired for misconduct or not.
0 coins
Katherine Hunter
•That's correct. Anything other than a straightforward layoff often requires additional review which can add 2-4 weeks to processing time.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know my claim finally got approved today! It took exactly 15 days from when I filed. Got the approval email this morning and already filed my weekly claim. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!

For anyone still waiting, I found that calling Washington ESD right at 8am when they open gives you the best chance of getting through. I called at 8:02am yesterday and was connected after about 20 minutes on hold.

Abigail Patel
•I'll try that tomorrow morning. Thanks for the tip!

•Or you could try that Claimyr service that was mentioned earlier. Might be easier than setting an alarm for 8am every day.

The whole unemployment system is designed to discourage people from applying. They make it as difficult and time-consuming as possible hoping people will just give up and find work instead of claiming benefits they're entitled to.
0 coins
Nolan Carter
•I don't think it's intentionally designed that way, but the system definitely needs improvement. Too many people struggling to get help.

Natalia Stone
•Either way the result is the same - people who need help can't get it quickly enough.

Just to close the loop on this thread - I see a lot of people worrying about timing. In my experience helping family and friends with Washington ESD claims, normal processing time is 2-3 weeks for layoffs, 3-5 weeks if there are any complications. The system isn't perfect but it does work eventually.

Isaac Wright
•This whole thread has been super helpful. I feel much better about my situation now and will just wait it out a bit longer.

If your claim is still pending after 4 weeks, definitely use that Claimyr thing someone mentioned to call Washington ESD. At that point there's probably an issue that needs to be resolved and you won't know what it is unless you talk to someone.

Ellie Perry
•Good point. Better to find out sooner rather than later if there's a problem.

•Exactly - that's when I used Claimyr and found out my claim was stuck in adjudication. Would have saved weeks if I'd called earlier.

Hope this helps future people searching for this info. The main takeaways seem to be: 2-3 weeks is normal for straightforward layoffs, keep filing weekly claims while pending, and don't be afraid to call if it goes past 3-4 weeks.

•Perfect summary! This thread has been exactly what I needed to read. Thanks everyone!
