How long does unemployment take to be approved in Washington ESD?
I submitted my unemployment application through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My status just says 'claim pending' with no other details. I lost my job due to company downsizing and I'm getting really anxious about when I'll start receiving benefits. Does anyone know the typical timeline for Washington ESD to approve unemployment claims? I've never filed before so I have no idea what to expect.

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process a standard unemployment claim if there are no issues. Since you were laid off due to downsizing, that should be pretty straightforward. The delay is usually just due to their processing volume.

•That's somewhat reassuring. I was worried something was wrong since I haven't heard anything yet.

•yeah 2-3 weeks sounds about right, mine took exactly 16 days last year

Keep in mind that if Washington ESD has any questions about your separation or needs to verify information with your employer, it can take much longer. They might put your claim into adjudication which can add several more weeks to the process.

•What exactly is adjudication? Should I be worried about that happening?

•Adjudication is when they need to investigate something about your claim before approving it. Since you said it was a company downsizing, you probably won't have issues unless there are discrepancies in the information.

I had a similar situation last month - my claim was stuck in processing for over 3 weeks with no updates. I was getting frustrated trying to call Washington ESD because their phone lines are always busy. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person. They have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim.

•That's interesting - I didn't know there were services to help with calling Washington ESD. How does that work exactly?

•Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

•I've heard of Claimyr too but never tried it. Might be worth it if you're really stuck and need answers.

The waiting is the worst part! I'm on week 4 of waiting for my claim to be approved. Washington ESD says they're processing claims in the order received but it feels like forever when you're waiting for money to pay bills.

•Week 4?! That's making me even more nervous. Did they give you any reason for the delay?

•They said they're verifying my work history with my previous employer. Apparently some employers are slow to respond to Washington ESD's requests.

just keep checking your online account every few days. sometimes the status changes without them sending you an email notification

•Good tip, I'll make sure to check regularly. Thanks!

One thing to remember is that once your claim is approved, you'll get paid for all the weeks you were eligible, including the waiting period. So even if it takes 3-4 weeks to get approved, you won't lose out on those benefits as long as you've been filing your weekly claims.

•Wait, I need to file weekly claims even before my initial claim is approved? I didn't know that!

•Yes, you should file weekly claims starting the week after you file your initial application. This ensures you get paid for all eligible weeks once approved.

•This is super important - I made this mistake and lost out on 2 weeks of benefits because I didn't file weekly claims while waiting for approval.

The Washington ESD website says they aim to process claims within 21 days, but with high volumes it can take longer. I think they're still dealing with backlogs from all the people who filed during the pandemic recovery period.

•21 days seems reasonable I guess, though it feels like forever when you're waiting.

If you're really concerned about the timeline, you could try calling Washington ESD directly. The number is on their website. Fair warning though - you'll probably be on hold for a really long time if you even get through.

•I tried calling twice already and got disconnected both times after being on hold for over an hour. So frustrating!

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. They handle all that waiting and calling for you. Much less stressful than trying to get through yourself.

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST. I've been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing. Their system is completely broken and they don't care about people who need help.

•5 weeks?! That's terrible. Have you been able to talk to anyone there about what's causing the delay?

•I can't even get through to talk to anyone. The phone system just hangs up on you after hours of waiting.

My experience was pretty smooth actually. Filed on a Tuesday, got approved the following Friday. I think it depends on how busy they are when you file and whether there are any complications with your case.

•Wow, that's really fast! What industry were you in? Maybe that affects processing time?

•I was in retail. Maybe because layoffs are so common in retail they process those claims faster? Just a guess though.

Make sure you have all your documents ready just in case. Sometimes Washington ESD will suddenly ask for additional verification and if you don't respond quickly it can delay your claim even more.

•What kind of documents should I have ready?

•Pay stubs, termination letter, any separation paperwork from your employer. Also keep track of any job search activities you're doing.

The job search requirement is important too. You need to be actively looking for work and keeping records of your job search activities. This doesn't delay your initial approval but it's required for ongoing benefits.

•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week? I've been applying to a few but I'm not sure if it's enough.

•I believe it's 3 job search activities per week for Washington ESD. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc.

just wanted to say hang in there. the waiting is stressful but most people do get approved eventually. try not to worry too much about the timeline

•Thanks for the encouragement. It's hard not to stress when bills are due soon.

One more thing - make sure you're checking your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account regularly. Sometimes Washington ESD will send messages through that system that you need to respond to, and missing those can delay your claim significantly.

•I check it every couple days but haven't gotten any messages yet. I'll make sure to keep monitoring it.

My friend used that Claimyr service too and said it was really helpful. She was able to get answers about her claim status that she couldn't get any other way. Might be worth trying if you're getting anxious about the wait.

•I'm definitely considering it at this point. Better than spending hours trying to call myself.

Remember that Washington ESD can backdate your benefits to when you first became unemployed, so even if approval takes a while, you should still get paid for all the weeks you were eligible. The key is making sure you file those weekly claims.

Dmitry Ivanov
•That's good to know. I was worried I'd lose money if the approval took too long.

The average seems to be about 2-3 weeks for straightforward cases. If you hit the 4 week mark with no communication, that's when I'd really start pushing for answers from Washington ESD.

•Good benchmark. I'll give it another week and then start being more proactive about getting answers.

Update us when you hear back! Always curious to hear how long it actually takes for people. Seems like there's a lot of variation in processing times.

If you do end up needing to call Washington ESD and want to avoid the hassle, I'd definitely recommend trying Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it really saved me time and frustration when I needed to get through to them about my claim.

•Thanks for the recommendation. If I don't hear anything by next week I'll probably give them a try.
