How long does unemployment application take to process in Washington ESD?
Just submitted my unemployment application through the Washington ESD website three days ago and wondering what I should expect for processing time. I've never filed for unemployment before and have no idea if this is normal or if I should be worried. My job ended last week due to company downsizing and I really need to know when benefits might start. Anyone know the typical timeline for Washington ESD to process new applications?

From my experience, Washington ESD typically takes 2-3 weeks to process initial unemployment applications if there are no complications. You should receive a monetary determination letter first, then an eligibility determination. Make sure you file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval.

•Thanks! Should I be filing weekly claims already even though I haven't heard anything back yet?

•Yes, absolutely file your weekly claims starting the week you became unemployed. You can't get paid for weeks you don't claim, even if your application gets approved later.

mine took forever last year, like 6 weeks before i heard anything and then it went into adjudication for another month

•Oh no, what caused the delay? Was there something wrong with your application?

•they said it was because my employer contested it but i never got any notice about that until way later

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your application status, I had great success using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They helped me get connected to an actual agent when I couldn't get through on my own. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me weeks of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment to kick in.

•The value is definitely worth it when you consider how much time you save not calling hundreds of times. Plus you get to talk to a real person who can actually check your claim status.

•I was skeptical about using a third party service but honestly after three weeks of not being able to get through to Washington ESD, I tried Claimyr and got connected within an hour. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim.

TYPICAL PROCESSING TIMES FOR WASHINGTON ESD: - Simple applications: 10-14 business days - Applications requiring verification: 3-4 weeks - Applications with employer disputes: 4-8 weeks - Applications requiring adjudication: 6-12 weeks You'll know there's an issue if you don't receive your monetary determination within 3 weeks.

•This is really helpful! What exactly is a monetary determination?
0 coins
Maria Gonzalez
•The monetary determination tells you how much your weekly benefit amount will be based on your past earnings. It's usually the first letter you get from Washington ESD.

•I never got a monetary determination letter but I can see my weekly benefit amount in my account online. Is that normal?

The whole system is so slow it's ridiculous!! I applied 5 weeks ago and still haven't gotten paid a dime. Meanwhile bills are piling up and Washington ESD just keeps saying 'your claim is under review' with no timeline.

•Have you tried calling to find out what specific issue is causing the delay? Sometimes there's a simple document they need that they haven't told you about.

•I've called probably 200 times over the past month and either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours.

•This is exactly why I recommend Claimyr - you don't have to waste time with the busy signals and disconnections. They handle getting you through to an agent.

Quick question - do they start processing your application immediately when you submit it online or do they wait until after the one week waiting period?
0 coins
Maria Gonzalez
•They start processing immediately. The waiting period is separate from the application processing time. You still need to file weekly claims during the waiting period even though you won't get paid for that first week.

•Got it, thanks! I was confused about whether I should wait to file my first weekly claim.

Check your SecureAccess Washington account regularly because sometimes Washington ESD will request additional documents and if you don't respond quickly it can delay your whole application. I almost missed a request for employment verification that was buried in my messages.

•Good tip! How often should I be checking? Daily?

Elijah Brown
•I'd check every couple days at least, especially in the first few weeks after applying. The notifications don't always work properly.

depends on your situation honestly... mine was pretty straightforward layoff and took exactly 2 weeks to get approved and first payment. But my friend who got fired took like 2 months because they had to do an investigation

•Mine was a layoff due to company downsizing so hopefully it's straightforward like yours was.

•yeah you should be fine then, layoffs usually process pretty quickly unless there's missing wage info or something

Just remembered - make sure you do the WorkSourceWA registration thing right away if you haven't already. I think that can slow things down if you don't do it.

Sophie Hernandez
•Yes, you need to register with WorkSourceWA within a certain timeframe. It's part of the job search requirements even while your claim is processing.

Emily Thompson
•I did register but wasn't sure if I needed to start looking for jobs already or if I should wait until my claim is approved.

•You should start your job search activities immediately. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week from the very first week you claim benefits.

One thing I learned - if your application gets stuck and you can't figure out why, getting an actual Washington ESD agent on the phone makes all the difference. They can see things in your file that don't show up in your online account. That's when services like Claimyr really pay off because you can actually reach someone.

•I might have to try this Claimyr thing you keep mentioning. I'm desperate at this point.

•Definitely worth trying if you've been stuck for weeks. The peace of mind alone is worth it when you're stressed about money.

everyone's experience is different but here's what i've seen: - if you get your determination letter within 2 weeks = probably smooth sailing - if it takes 3+ weeks = something might be wrong - if you don't hear anything after a month = definitely call

•This is a good rule of thumb, thanks! I'll give it the full 2 weeks before I start worrying.

Pro tip: keep copies of everything you submit and screenshot your confirmation pages. I had an issue where Washington ESD claimed they never received my application but I had the confirmation number to prove I submitted it.

Emily Thompson
•Good thinking! I did save the confirmation email but I'll screenshot my account too.

•Smart! Also keep track of all your job search activities from day one in case they audit your claim later.

Has anyone noticed if applications submitted on certain days of the week process faster? Like is there any advantage to applying on Monday vs Friday?
0 coins
Maria Gonzalez
•The day you submit doesn't matter for processing speed. Washington ESD processes applications in the order received regardless of when during the week they're submitted.

Zoe Walker
•Thanks, I was overthinking it I guess.

Update for anyone following this thread - I just got my determination letter today, exactly 11 business days after applying. No issues, straightforward layoff situation. Now waiting for my first payment which should come this week.

Emily Thompson
•That's encouraging! My situation is similar to yours so hopefully I'll hear something soon.

•Yeah keep filing those weekly claims and you should be good. The first payment usually comes about a week after you get approved.

word of warning - even after you get approved the payments can be delayed if there are any holidays or technical issues with the system. I got approved on a Wednesday and didn't get paid until the following Tuesday

Emily Thompson
•Good to know! At least once you're approved you know the money is coming eventually.

My processing time was exactly 15 calendar days from application to first payment in bank account. No complications, no adjudication, just a standard voluntary layoff due to position elimination. Filed all my weekly claims on time and did my job search requirements from week one.

Emily Thompson
•This gives me hope! I'm on day 4 now so hopefully I'll know something in the next week or two.

•You should definitely hear something within 2 weeks if it's a straightforward case like yours sounds.

just want to add that even if it takes a while to process you'll get backpay for all the weeks you were eligible and filed claims for. so don't stress too much about delays
0 coins
Emily Thompson
•That's reassuring! I was worried I might lose out on benefits if there were delays.
0 coins
Sophie Hernandez
•Exactly right. As long as you file your weekly claims and you're ultimately approved, you'll receive payment for all eligible weeks dating back to when you became unemployed.

The key is staying on top of any requests for information. I got a request for wage verification that I almost missed and it would have delayed everything by weeks if I hadn't responded within the 10-day deadline.
0 coins
Emily Thompson
•How did they notify you about the wage verification request? Email or through the website?
0 coins
Mateo Silva
•It showed up in my SecureAccess Washington messages but I didn't get an email notification. That's why you need to check regularly.

Bottom line for OP - if everything is straightforward you're looking at 2-3 weeks max. But definitely keep filing weekly claims and checking your account for any messages or requests. And if you hit the 3 week mark with no word, start making some phone calls to find out what's up.

•Perfect summary, thanks everyone! This thread has been super helpful for setting expectations.

•And remember if you can't get through on the phone, services like Claimyr can save you tons of time and frustration. Sometimes you need to talk to a real person to get answers.
