How long does it take for unemployment to be approved in Washington ESD?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any determination letter yet. I lost my job at a retail store due to layoffs and I thought this would be pretty straightforward. I've been filing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to but I'm getting anxious about when I'll actually start receiving benefits. Does anyone know the typical timeline for Washington ESD to approve a regular unemployment claim? I need to know if I should be worried or if this is normal processing time.

Washington ESD typically takes 2-3 weeks to process initial claims, but it can take longer if they need additional information or if your claim requires adjudication. Since you're at 10 days, you're still within the normal processing window. Keep checking your account for any requests for additional documentation.

Washington ESD typically processes straightforward claims within 2-3 weeks if there are no complications. If your claim goes into adjudication for any reason (like work separation issues or wage verification), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Check your account for any 'To Do' items that might be holding things up.

•Thanks! I don't see any to-do items in my account. Does that mean it should be approved soon?

•Not necessarily. Sometimes they're still verifying your wages with your employer even if nothing shows up in your account.

Been waiting 3 weeks here and nothing. Called probably 50 times and either get disconnected or told to wait. This is ridiculous, I have bills to pay!

Mine took exactly 16 days from filing to first payment. No issues with my claim though - got laid off, had enough wages, filed immediately. If you have any complications it will definitely take longer.

The whole system is a joke. I've been waiting 5 weeks and every time I call they give me a different excuse. First it was 'wage verification' then 'quality review' now they're saying something about my job search requirements. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SEARCH FOR JOBS WITH NO INCOME???

•I understand the frustration, but you do need to be doing your job search activities even while your claim is pending. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you need to log them.

Pro tip: if you're waiting more than 3 weeks, something is probably wrong. Don't just sit there hoping - you need to get on the phone with them and find out what's causing the delay. I wasted 6 weeks just waiting when there was a simple issue that could have been resolved immediately.

The processing time can vary depending on your specific situation. Simple layoff cases like yours typically move faster than claims involving job separation issues or when Washington ESD needs to verify employment history. If you were laid off due to lack of work, that's usually pretty clear-cut for them to process.

Just remember that no news is usually good news with Washington ESD. If there were issues with your claim, they would have contacted you by now for additional information or documentation.

•That's a good point. I haven't received any requests for additional info, so hopefully that means everything is proceeding normally.

For what it's worth, I had my claim approved in exactly 16 days last month. Layoff due to budget cuts at my company. The determination letter showed up in my online account before I got the physical mail.

•Good to know about checking online first. I'll make sure to keep checking my account regularly.

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago and ended up using Claimyr to get through to an agent around the 3-week mark just to confirm everything was processing normally. The agent was able to tell me my claim was in final review and would be approved within a few days. Sometimes that peace of mind is worth it.

•That does sound like it would be worth it for the peace of mind. I'll definitely consider that option if I get to the 3-week mark.

•That's exactly why I used it too. Just knowing where things stood helped reduce the anxiety.

hang in there, you're still well within normal processing time. most people get approved between weeks 2-4 so you've still got time before you need to worry

To summarize what everyone's said - 2-4 weeks is the standard timeframe, you're at 10 days so still well within normal range, keep filing weekly claims, and if you need to contact Washington ESD after 3 weeks, you have options like Claimyr to help get through. Your situation sounds straightforward so I'd expect approval soon.

One last tip - make sure you have direct deposit set up in your account if you haven't already. Once you're approved, that'll speed up getting your first payment.

•Good reminder! I set that up when I first filed but I'll double-check it's correct.

•Yeah, direct deposit is way faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive.
