How long does unemployment take to get approved with Washington ESD?
I submitted my unemployment application through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any correspondence yet. I'm getting pretty anxious about when I might start receiving benefits since I have bills coming due. For those who've been through this process recently, how long did it take from application to approval? Should I be worried that it's taking this long or is this normal timing for Washington ESD?

It really depends on your situation. Mine took about 2 weeks from start to finish, but that was pretty straightforward - no issues with my employer or work history.

•Did you get any updates during those 2 weeks or did it just suddenly change to approved?

•I got an email after about a week saying they needed to verify my identity and then another one when it was approved. Check your spam folder too.

The standard processing time for Washington ESD is typically 2-3 weeks for straightforward claims. However, if your claim requires adjudication (like if there's a question about why you separated from your job), it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. You should receive a monetary determination letter within the first week or two that shows your weekly benefit amount, even if your claim is still pending.

•I haven't gotten any monetary determination letter yet. Does that mean something's wrong with my application?

•Not necessarily. Sometimes they're delayed, especially if there's high volume. You can check your eServices account to see if there are any pending issues that need your attention.

Honestly, if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I found out about it when I was stuck waiting for 5 weeks with no updates. It's a service that helps you actually get through to an ESD agent - you can check it out at claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I've been trying to call ESD for weeks.

•Yeah it worked for me. Got connected to an agent within a day and found out my claim was stuck because of a simple verification issue that I could fix right away.

•Sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate at this point. The ESD phone lines are impossible.

UGH the waiting is the worst part!! I'm on week 3 of waiting and still nothing. My claim just says 'pending' and I have no idea what's going on. I've called probably 50 times and either get busy signal or hung up on after waiting forever.

•Same boat here. It's so frustrating when you need the money and have no idea what's happening with your claim.

•Right?? And the website is useless for getting actual information about WHY it's taking so long.

Have you checked if you have any outstanding issues in your eServices account? Sometimes there are things you need to respond to that aren't obvious.

•I logged in and don't see any alerts or messages. Just the same 'under review' status.

•That's good then. Probably just normal processing time. I know it's stressful but try to be patient.

honestly the whole system is broken. took me 8 weeks to get approved and that was WITH calling every single day. they're just overwhelmed and understaffed

Elijah Jackson
•8 weeks?! That's insane. How did you survive that long without income?

•barely. had to borrow money from family and use credit cards. it was awful

Just to set expectations - if your claim goes into adjudication, Washington ESD has to investigate the circumstances of your job separation. This happens when employers contest the claim or there are questions about eligibility. The adjudication process alone can take 3-6 weeks on top of the initial processing time.

•How would I know if my claim is in adjudication? Is there a specific status for that?
0 coins
Mason Davis
•Yes, it would show 'adjudication in progress' or similar language in your eServices account. You'd also typically receive a notice explaining what they're reviewing.

The timing really varies. Mine was approved in 12 days but my friend waited almost 2 months because his employer disputed it. Best thing you can do is keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - that way you get backpay once it's approved.

•I've been doing the weekly claims but it feels weird filing them when I haven't been approved yet.

•You're supposed to keep filing them. That's how you maintain your claim and get paid for those weeks once approved.

Has anyone tried that Claimyr thing mentioned earlier? I'm getting desperate trying to reach someone at ESD.

•Yeah I mentioned it earlier - it actually worked for me. Worth trying if you're stuck.

•I'm going to check out that video demo. Can't hurt to try something different at this point.

The whole system is a nightmare. I've been waiting 4 weeks and still no word. Meanwhile bills are piling up and I'm running out of savings. This is supposed to be insurance we paid into!

•I feel for you. It's definitely a stressful process when you're depending on those benefits.

•Thanks. It's just so frustrating that there's no transparency in the process.

One thing to keep in mind - even if your claim takes longer to process, you'll receive retroactive payments back to your filing date once it's approved. So don't lose hope if it's taking longer than expected.

•That's reassuring to know. I was worried I'd lose out on benefits for the weeks I'm waiting.

•Nope, as long as you keep filing your weekly claims during the waiting period, you'll get paid for those weeks.

For anyone still waiting - make sure you're checking your eServices account regularly and responding to any requests for information immediately. Delays in responding can really slow down the process.

•Good advice. I've been checking every few days but maybe I should check daily.

•Yeah, and check your email too including spam folder. Sometimes they send requests there.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone using that Claimyr service and found out my claim was stuck because they needed me to verify my identity. Agent was able to walk me through the process and now it's moving forward. Wish I had known about this weeks ago!

•That's great news! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr now.

•How long did it take for them to connect you with an agent?

•Less than 24 hours. So much better than trying to call directly.

The key is patience unfortunately. I know it's hard when you need the money but most claims do get processed eventually.

•You're right. I just need to try to stay positive and keep checking for updates.

if you're really struggling financially while waiting, look into local food banks and assistance programs. that helped me get through the long wait

Elijah Jackson
•That's a good suggestion. I hadn't thought about local resources.

•yeah 211 is a good number to call for local assistance programs

Final piece of advice - document everything. Keep records of when you filed, any correspondence you receive, and dates you try to contact ESD. This can be helpful if there are any issues later.

Elijah Jackson
•Good point. I'll start keeping better records of everything.

•It's always better to have the documentation and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Just wanted to update - I tried Claimyr and got connected to an ESD agent today! Turns out my employer had submitted some info that was holding up my claim. Agent was able to resolve it on the spot. Definitely recommend trying it if you're stuck.

•That's awesome! I'm going to look into that service too if my claim doesn't move forward soon.

•Yeah, the claimyr.com website explains it pretty well. Much better than the endless hold times calling ESD directly.

Thanks everyone for all the advice and sharing your experiences. It's helpful to know I'm not alone in this waiting game. I'll keep filing my weekly claims and checking for updates. If it goes much longer I'll definitely look into that Claimyr service that seems to have helped a few people here.
