How long does it usually take for Washington ESD unemployment to get approved?
I submitted my unemployment application through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't gotten any correspondence yet. I'm starting to get anxious because I need to know if I'll have income coming in soon. For those who have been through this process recently, how long did it take from when you first applied until you got your first payment? Is 10 days normal or should I be worried something went wrong?

The typical timeframe for Washington ESD to process a new unemployment claim is 2-3 weeks if there are no complications. Your 10 days is still within the normal range. However, if they need to verify your employment history or investigate any issues, it can take 4-6 weeks or longer.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I haven't gotten any requests for additional documentation so hopefully that's a good sign.

•Yeah, no news is usually good news with Washington ESD. They'll definitely contact you if they need anything else.

Mine took exactly 3 weeks from application to first payment. The waiting is the worst part but hang in there!

•Good to know! Did you have to do anything during those 3 weeks or just wait?

•Just filed my weekly claims and waited. Make sure you're doing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval!

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I discovered Claimyr recently and it's been a game changer. They help you actually reach a live agent instead of getting stuck in phone hell. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of this before but definitely bookmarking it. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible.

•That's actually pretty clever. I've wasted so many hours trying to get through to them the regular way.

TYPICAL GOVERNMENT INEFFICIENCY! They take forever to approve claims but expect you to file weekly claims immediately. The whole system is backwards.

•I mean, they do have to verify everything to prevent fraud. It's frustrating but there's a reason for the process.

•Sure but other states manage to do it faster. Washington ESD is just slow.

Wait, you're supposed to file weekly claims before getting approved? I thought you only did that after approval!

•Yes, you need to file weekly claims starting the week after you apply, even while waiting for approval. If you don't, you could lose those weeks of benefits.

•Oh no, I think I missed filing last week then. Can I still file it late?

•You might be able to file it late but there could be issues. I'd try calling Washington ESD or using that Claimyr service someone mentioned to get clarification.

My claim got stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks because they needed to verify my last employer. Turns out the company had changed their corporate name and Washington ESD couldn't match the records initially.

•Yikes, 6 weeks! How did you finally get it resolved?

•I had to provide documentation showing the company name change. Once I got that to them, it was approved within a few days.

Pro tip: make sure all your employer information matches exactly what's on your W-2s and pay stubs. Any discrepancies can trigger additional review.

•That's good advice. I double-checked everything when I applied so hopefully I'm good.

I applied in November and it took almost 4 weeks because of the holiday delays. If you're applying around any major holidays, expect longer processing times.

•Good point about holidays. Washington ESD definitely slows down during those times.

The uncertainty is so stressful. I kept checking my account multiple times a day when I was waiting for approval.

•Same! I've been obsessively checking the website hoping for an update.

•Try not to stress too much. Once it's approved, you'll get all the back payments for the weeks you filed claims.

If your claim gets denied, don't panic. You can appeal and often win if you have good documentation. The appeals process adds time but it's worth it if you deserve benefits.

•Hopefully I won't need to worry about that, but good to know appeals are possible.

Been waiting 3 weeks now and starting to get really worried about paying rent. This waiting period is brutal when you have bills to pay.

•I totally understand the financial stress. Have you looked into any local emergency assistance programs while you wait?

•Haven't thought of that. I'll look into what's available in my area.

My neighbor used Claimyr when her claim was taking forever and she said they helped her get through to someone who could explain what was holding things up. Might be worth trying if you're really anxious about the delay.

•Second mention of Claimyr in this thread. Might be worth checking out if I don't hear anything soon.

The worst part is not knowing if there's a problem or if it's just normal processing time. Washington ESD really needs better communication.

•Agreed! Even just a status update saying 'still processing, no action needed' would help so much.

Quick question - do you get an email when your claim is approved or do you have to keep checking the website?

Manny Lark
•You should get an email notification, but I'd still check the website regularly just in case.

Mae Bennett
•Thanks, I'll keep doing both then.

For what it's worth, once you're approved, the payments usually come pretty quickly. Direct deposit is much faster than waiting for a debit card.

•I set up direct deposit when I applied, so that should help.

I was in your exact situation last month. Applied, waited anxiously for 2.5 weeks, then suddenly got approved and received my first payment within 3 days. The waiting is awful but try to stay patient.

Make sure you're keeping records of your job search activities even while waiting for approval. You'll need to report those on your weekly claims.

•Good reminder. I've been job searching but haven't been keeping detailed records. I'll start doing that now.

The 2-3 week timeframe is pretty standard unless there are complications. Since you haven't been asked for additional information, you're probably just in the normal processing queue.

Last thing - if you do need to contact Washington ESD and the regular phone lines aren't working, that Claimyr service people mentioned actually worked for my sister. She was able to get through and find out her claim was approved but there was a glitch preventing the notification email from sending.

•Wow, that's exactly the kind of situation where being able to talk to someone would be huge. Definitely keeping Claimyr as a backup option.
