How long does it take for unemployment to get approved Washington ESD?

Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any correspondence yet. I know they're probably swamped but I'm starting to get anxious about when I'll actually start receiving benefits. For those who have been through this recently, how long did it take from filing to actually getting approved and receiving your first payment? I'm worried I might have missed something or made an error on my application.

It varies a lot depending on your situation. If your claim is straightforward with no issues, it can be approved within 2-3 weeks. But if there are any complications like previous employers disputing the claim or issues with your work history, it can take much longer - sometimes 6-8 weeks or more.

That's what I was afraid of. I left my last job on good terms so hopefully there won't be any disputes. Did you have to do anything while waiting or just sit tight?

0 coins

Just keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. That's super important - you need to maintain your claim status by continuing to certify weekly.

mine took forever!!! like 7 weeks and they kept asking for more documentation. every time i thought it was done they wanted something else. so frustrating

0 coins

Oh no, what kind of documentation did they keep asking for? I want to make sure I have everything ready.

0 coins

proof of identity, wage records, separation notice from employer... seemed like they wanted everything twice

The approval timeline really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication. Simple claims with clear separation reasons (like layoffs) typically get approved faster. But if there are questions about why you left your job, eligibility issues, or wage discrepancies, your claim will go to adjudication which adds significant time - often 4-6 weeks minimum.

0 coins

How do you know if your claim is in adjudication? Does Washington ESD notify you or do you have to check somewhere?

0 coins

You should see it on your claim status page when you log into your account. It will show 'adjudication in progress' or something similar. They may also send you letters asking for additional information.

I had a really hard time getting through to Washington ESD to check on my claim status when I was waiting. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration trying to call on my own.

0 coins

How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you or what?

0 coins

They basically handle the calling process and get you connected to a Washington ESD representative. Way better than sitting on hold for hours and getting nowhere.

0 coins

Interesting, I've never heard of that before. Might be worth looking into if I can't get through the normal way.

0 coins

The whole system is a joke. I waited 9 weeks for my claim to be approved and when I finally got someone on the phone they told me it was just sitting in a pile on someone's desk. No real reason for the delay, just bureaucratic incompetence.

0 coins

Nine weeks?! That's insane. Did you eventually get all your back pay though?

0 coins

Yeah eventually got the back pay but it was a nightmare. Had to fight for every penny and prove I was still looking for work the whole time.

0 coins

That's exactly why it's so important to keep filing those weekly claims and documenting your job search activities even while waiting for approval.

0 coins

I'm in the same boat - filed 2 weeks ago and still waiting. The uncertainty is killing me. I've got bills to pay and no idea when the money will actually start coming in.

0 coins

Right?! The waiting is the worst part. I keep checking my account multiple times a day hoping something will change.

0 coins

same here... checking constantly doesn't make it go faster but i can't help myself lol

For what it's worth, Washington ESD has been processing claims faster than they were during the pandemic. Average processing time for straightforward claims is now around 3-4 weeks, which is much better than the 8-12 weeks we saw in 2020-2021.

0 coins

That's somewhat reassuring. I guess 3-4 weeks isn't too bad if that's really the average now.

0 coins

3-4 weeks is still way too long when people need money for rent and groceries. Other states do it faster.

0 coins

One thing that can speed up the process is making sure all your employer information is accurate and complete when you file. Any discrepancies in dates, wages, or separation reasons can trigger additional review time.

0 coins

I tried to be really careful about that but now I'm second-guessing myself. Is there a way to check what information they have on file?

0 coins

You can see some of it in your online account under the claim details section. If you notice any errors, you should contact Washington ESD right away to correct them.

0 coins

Just want to add that even after your claim is approved, there's usually a waiting week before you receive your first payment. So factor that into your timeline too.

0 coins

Wait, what's a waiting week? I thought once it's approved you start getting paid right away.

0 coins

Washington has a one-week waiting period for new claims. So your first week of benefits is unpaid, then you start receiving payments for subsequent weeks.

0 coins

That's correct. The waiting week is served during your first week of unemployment, and you won't receive payment for that week unless you have a qualifying separation like a layoff.

0 coins

another thing that slowed mine down was they couldn't verify my identity at first. had to send in copies of my driver's license and social security card. apparently lots of people are having this issue

0 coins

Did they ask you for those documents or did you have to figure out that's what they needed?

0 coins

they sent me a letter asking for identity verification documents but it took like 2 weeks to get the letter

0 coins

If you're getting anxious about the wait time, I'd recommend using that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier to get through to Washington ESD and check on your claim status. At least then you'll know if there are any issues or if everything is processing normally.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely considering that. Better than wondering what's going on.

0 coins

I might try that too. Been trying to call Washington ESD for days with no luck.

0 coins

took me 3 weeks exactly from filing to getting my first payment. no issues or complications though, just a standard layoff situation

0 coins

That gives me hope! Mine was also a layoff so maybe it'll be similar timing.

0 coins

The real problem is there's no transparency in the process. They don't tell you where your claim is in the queue or what they're actually doing with it. You just have to sit there and wait like a mushroom - kept in the dark.

0 coins

I agree the communication could be better. A simple status update system would help reduce anxiety for claimants.

0 coins

Some states have better tracking systems. Washington ESD could definitely improve their online portal.

0 coins

It's worth noting that Washington ESD processes claims in the order they receive them, so filing early in the week (Monday-Tuesday) might get you processed slightly faster than filing on Friday.

0 coins

Interesting, I didn't know that. I filed on a Wednesday so hopefully that's not too bad.

0 coins

makes sense... government offices probably clear their workload early in the week

0 coins

Update: just got a letter from Washington ESD asking for more information about my separation from my last job. So looks like my claim is going to take longer than the basic 3-4 weeks.

0 coins

What kind of information are they asking for? I'm worried I might get the same request.

0 coins

They want details about my last day of work and whether I was offered any other positions before being laid off. Pretty standard stuff but still adds time to the process.

0 coins

For anyone still waiting, remember that you can check your claim status online 24/7 through your Washington ESD account. Look for any pending issues or required actions that might be holding up your claim.

0 coins

I've been checking daily but it just says 'under review' with no other details. Wish it was more specific.

0 coins

same here... very vague status updates

0 coins

The best advice I can give is to be patient but persistent. Keep filing your weekly claims, respond quickly to any requests for information, and don't hesitate to contact Washington ESD if you haven't heard anything after 4-5 weeks.

0 coins

Good advice. I'll try to be patient for now but will definitely follow up if it goes much longer.

0 coins

And if you can't get through to them by phone, definitely consider using Claimyr to help with that. Much less stressful than trying to call repeatedly.

0 coins

honestly the hardest part is just the waiting and not knowing. once you get approved and start receiving payments it's pretty straightforward

0 coins

Looking forward to getting to that point! Thanks everyone for all the helpful information.

0 coins

yeah this thread has been really helpful for managing expectations

0 coins

Final thought: while waiting for approval, make sure you're actively job searching and keeping records of your search activities. Washington ESD requires proof of job search efforts, and having good documentation from the start will help if they ask for it later.

0 coins

Good reminder. I've been applying to jobs but haven't been keeping detailed records. Should probably start doing that.

0 coins

Yes, keep a log of where you applied, when you applied, and what type of positions. Makes it much easier when you need to report your job search activities.

0 coins

Bottom line: expect 3-6 weeks for approval depending on your situation. Could be faster, could be slower. The system is what it is - slow but it eventually works for most people.

0 coins

That seems like a reasonable expectation. Thanks for the reality check.
