How long to get unemployment approved through Washington ESD?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything back. My claim status just says 'under review' but doesn't give me any timeframe. I'm starting to get worried because my savings are running low and I need to know when I can expect my first payment. Has anyone recently gone through the approval process? How long did it actually take from filing to getting approved and receiving benefits?

It really depends on your situation. If everything is straightforward with no complications, Washington ESD typically processes claims within 2-3 weeks. But if there are any issues that need verification or if your claim goes into adjudication, it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

•What kind of issues would cause delays? I think I filled everything out correctly but now I'm second-guessing myself.

•Common things that slow it down are issues with your separation reason, wage verification problems, or if you worked for multiple employers. Sometimes they need additional documentation from your former employer too.

I filed in early December and it took exactly 3 weeks to get approved. But I had a pretty clear-cut layoff situation with no complications. The hardest part was actually getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions about the process.

•Yeah I've been trying to call but can never get through. Did you have any luck reaching them?

•Barely. I must have called 50+ times over several days. Eventually I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

UGH the waiting is the worst part! I'm going on week 4 and still nothing. My claim went into adjudication because there was some confusion about whether I quit or was laid off. Apparently my employer reported it differently than what I put on my application.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. How do you even fix something like that?

•You have to provide documentation and sometimes they schedule a phone interview. It's a mess and takes forever. I wish I had known to be more careful about how I described my separation.

•If there's a discrepancy between what you reported and what your employer reported, Washington ESD will investigate. Make sure you have any emails, texts, or documentation about your separation to support your version of events.

Mine took 2.5 weeks but I think I got lucky. My friend's claim has been pending for over a month because of some wage verification issue. The system is so backed up right now.

•A month?? That's terrifying. How is anyone supposed to pay bills during that time?

Callum Savage
•Right? The system is broken. My friend had to borrow money from family just to survive while waiting.

Here's what typically happens with Washington ESD processing times: Simple claims with clear layoffs usually take 2-3 weeks. Claims requiring adjudication (separation issues, wage disputes, etc.) take 4-8 weeks. If you need to provide additional documentation, add another 1-2 weeks. The key is making sure your initial application is as accurate and complete as possible.

•Is there any way to check if my claim needs additional documentation? I don't want to just sit here waiting if there's something I need to do.

•Log into your Washington ESD account regularly and check for any alerts or requests for information. They'll also send letters to your mailing address if they need anything from you.

I've been waiting 5 weeks now and I'm about to lose my mind. Every time I try to call Washington ESD I either get a busy signal or sit on hold for hours just to get disconnected. This is ridiculous.

•Seriously, try that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. It was the only way I could actually reach a human being at Washington ESD. Worth every penny to not waste entire days trying to get through.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion.

The processing times have definitely gotten worse lately. I work with a lot of people who file for unemployment and I'm seeing 3-4 week waits even for straightforward cases. If your claim goes into adjudication, you're looking at 6+ weeks minimum.

•Why has it gotten worse? Are they understaffed or something?

•Combination of higher claim volumes and staffing issues. They're processing more claims than they have in years but haven't scaled up their workforce accordingly.

UPDATE: Finally got through to someone at Washington ESD after using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out there was an issue with my wage verification that I never would have known about if I hadn't called. They needed a pay stub from my last employer which I was able to provide right away. Wish I had called weeks ago instead of just waiting around!

•Oh wow, so there WAS something you needed to do but they never told you? That's so frustrating.

•Exactly! The system showed 'under review' but there was actually a specific document they were waiting for. No way I would have figured that out without talking to an actual person.

•This is exactly why calling is so important, even though it's a pain. The online system doesn't always show you the full picture of what's happening with your claim.

2-3 weeks if you're LUCKY. Mine took 5 weeks and that was with no complications. The whole system is a joke honestly.

•5 weeks with no issues?? That's way longer than what everyone else is saying.

•Yeah I don't know what happened. Maybe it got lost in the shuffle or something. By the time I got approved I was already behind on rent.

One thing that can help speed things up is making sure you file your weekly claims even while your initial claim is still pending. Some people think they need to wait until they're approved, but you should start filing weekly claims right away or you might lose out on benefits for those weeks.

Khalil Urso
•Wait really? I thought I had to wait until I was approved before filing weekly claims.
0 coins
Myles Regis
•Nope, you should file weekly claims starting the week after you submit your initial application. That way if you get approved, you'll get paid for all those weeks retroactively.

Landon Flounder
•This is correct. You need to file weekly claims continuously starting from your first week of unemployment, even during the approval process. Missing weekly claim filings can result in losing benefits for those weeks permanently.

•Same boat here. The waiting and not knowing is the worst part.

•yeah exactly, wish they would at least give you some kind of update or timeline

For anyone still waiting, here are some things you can do: 1) Check your Washington ESD account online daily for any alerts or requests for information, 2) Make sure you're filing weekly claims every week, 3) Keep all documentation related to your employment and separation, 4) If you haven't heard anything after 3 weeks, try calling to check on the status. The sooner you can identify and resolve any issues, the sooner you'll get approved.

•Good advice but calling is basically impossible. That's why services like Claimyr exist - they actually help you get through to a real person instead of wasting hours on hold.

Just want to add that once you do get approved, the first payment usually comes within a few days. So there's light at the end of the tunnel, even though the initial approval process feels like it takes forever.

Khalil Urso
•That's good to know at least. Hopefully I'll be in that position soon.

•Hang in there! The waiting sucks but most people do eventually get approved if they're eligible.

My claim was approved in exactly 2 weeks but I think that's because I had all my documentation ready and my separation was very clear-cut (company-wide layoffs). If there's any ambiguity about why you left your job, it's going to take longer.

Khalil Urso
•I was laid off too so hopefully that helps speed things up. Did you have to provide any additional documentation during the process?

Cass Green
•No, everything went smoothly. I think having the layoff notice from my employer helped a lot.

Bottom line is that Washington ESD is supposed to process claims within 21 days, but that's more of a goal than a guarantee. In reality, you should expect 3-4 weeks minimum, and potentially much longer if there are any complications with your claim.

Khalil Urso
•Ok so I shouldn't panic yet since I'm only at 10 days. I'll give it another week or two before I really start worrying.
0 coins
Aliyah Debovski
•Exactly. 10 days is still pretty early in the process. But definitely keep checking your account and filing weekly claims in the meantime.
