Reading through all this makes me realize how lucky I was that my union rep walked me through the unemployment filing process the day I got laid off. Everyone should have that kind of support.
Final thought for anyone else in this situation - there's also a phone service I heard about that helps people reach Washington ESD agents when the lines are jammed. Think it was Claimyr or something like that. Might be worth checking out if you run into phone trouble.
I had to use Claimyr twice last year when I had issues with my claim. Once for an adjudication question and once when my payments stopped randomly. Both times they got me through to someone who could actually help instead of just reading me the website info.
honestly just run. any employer who doesnt know basic payroll tax rules is going to cause you headaches. not worth the stress
Final thought on this - you could also contact Washington state Department of Revenue if you suspect the employer isn't properly registered or paying required taxes. They take tax evasion seriously and it protects other potential employees too.
The key thing is just getting started. The longer you wait, the more benefits you potentially lose since they don't backdate to when you became unemployed, only to when you applied.
Last tip - keep a notebook or folder with all your unemployment stuff. You'll get a lot of paperwork and it helps to stay organized.

Always happy to help people navigate the unemployment system. It's confusing enough without having to figure it out alone.
