How long does it take Washington ESD unemployment to process my claim?
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything back. The website just says 'claim under review' but doesn't give any timeframe. I'm starting to get worried because I need to know if I'm approved so I can budget properly. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to process new claims? I haven't had any red flags or anything complicated in my work history.

It really depends on your specific situation. For straightforward claims with no issues, Washington ESD usually processes them within 2-3 weeks. However, if there are any complications like job separation issues, multiple employers, or they need additional documentation, it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

•That's longer than I hoped but at least gives me a realistic timeline. I was laid off from a single employer so hopefully it's straightforward.

•2-3 weeks is optimistic these days. Mine took almost a month and that was with zero complications.

The processing time has definitely gotten longer since COVID. Washington ESD is still catching up with the backlog even though things have improved from 2020-2021. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination - you can't get paid for weeks you don't claim.

•Oh good point! I wasn't sure if I should file weekly claims before getting approved. I'll start doing that this week.

•Yes definitely file those weekly claims! I made that mistake and lost out on two weeks of benefits because I thought I had to wait.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status (which most people are), I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real person. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Interesting, never heard of that. How much does it cost?

•They focus on the value of actually reaching someone rather than the cost. For me it was worth it just to get a real status update instead of guessing.

•I'm skeptical of third-party services but honestly if it works... Washington ESD phone system is a nightmare.

Something else to keep in mind - if your claim goes into adjudication (which happens when there are questions about your eligibility), that adds significant time. Adjudication can take anywhere from 3-8 weeks depending on the complexity of the issue and Washington ESD's current workload.

•How would I know if my claim is in adjudication? Does it show up differently on the website?

Abigail Spencer
•Yes, if you log into your account it should show 'Adjudication in Progress' or something similar. You might also receive a fact-finding questionnaire in the mail or through your online account.

been waiting 3 weeks myself and getting really anxious about it. keep checking the website multiple times a day but nothing changes

•I know it's stressful but try not to check obsessively. Washington ESD typically updates claims overnight so checking once in the morning is usually sufficient.

•easier said than done when bills are piling up but you're probably right

The whole system is so slow! I filed in December and didn't get my first payment until mid-January. And that was without any complications - just the normal processing time. It's ridiculous that people have to wait so long when they're already in financial stress.

•Completely agree. They expect us to have months of savings while they take their sweet time processing claims.

•I understand the frustration, but Washington ESD has to verify employment history, wages, and reason for separation for each claim. It's a complex process even when it goes smoothly.

Pro tip: if you haven't already, make sure all your employer information is accurate on your application. I had to resubmit mine because I mixed up some dates and it delayed everything by another two weeks.

•Good point. I double-checked everything but now I'm second-guessing myself. Is there a way to verify what information they have on file?

•You can see some of it in your online account under claim details, but for complete verification you'd need to call Washington ESD.

Just want to add that even after your claim is approved, there can still be delays in receiving your first payment. The processing time is just for the initial determination - payment processing is separate and can take another 3-5 business days.

•So even after approval I'm looking at almost another week before seeing money? This is going to be tight.

•Unfortunately yes, but once you're in the system and filing weekly claims regularly, payments are much faster - usually 1-2 days after filing.

Has anyone tried that Claimyr thing mentioned earlier? I'm at the point where I'm willing to try anything to get through to Washington ESD. Been calling for days with no luck.

•Yeah I used it and it worked well. Got connected to an agent within about 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call for weeks on my own.

•I tried it last week and was pleasantly surprised. The agent was able to tell me exactly where my claim stood and what was holding it up.

The wait is definitely frustrating. I'm on week 4 of waiting and starting to panic about rent. At least I know I'm not alone in this situation reading everyone's experiences here.

•Hang in there. If you get approved, you'll receive back pay for all the weeks you were eligible, so the wait doesn't mean lost money, just delayed money.

•That's somewhat reassuring, thank you. Just wish the whole process was more transparent about timing.

One thing I learned - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, that can significantly increase processing time. Washington ESD has to request wage information from other states and that adds weeks to the process.

•Thankfully I've only worked in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

•Wish I had known that before filing. I worked in Oregon for 6 months last year and it's definitely complicating things.

My advice is to be patient but proactive. Keep filing weekly claims, respond immediately to any requests for information, and don't hesitate to call if something seems wrong. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, even with Washington ESD.

•Good advice. I'll try to stay on top of everything without driving myself crazy checking constantly.

•Exactly. Be persistent but reasonable. Washington ESD agents are people too and they respond better to polite persistence than angry demands.

For what it's worth, once the system works it really does work well. I've been filing weekly claims for 3 months now and payments come like clockwork every Wednesday. The initial wait is awful but it gets better.

•That's encouraging to hear. Looking forward to being in that routine phase rather than this waiting phase.

Just checked and I'm now at 16 days since filing. Starting to wonder if I should call or wait it out a bit longer. Don't want to be a pest but also don't want to let something slip through the cracks.

•16 days is still within normal range. I'd give it another week before calling, unless you see something specific that looks wrong in your online account.

•Or try that Claimyr service if you want peace of mind. Sometimes just knowing exactly where you stand makes the wait more bearable.

Bottom line - Washington ESD processing times are unfortunately long right now, but most claims do eventually get processed. Keep filing weekly claims, respond to any requests promptly, and try to be patient. The system isn't perfect but it does work eventually.
