How long does it take for unemployment to get approved in Washington ESD?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'pending' and I haven't received any correspondence about whether it's been approved or not. I'm getting really anxious because I need to know if I should keep looking for work or if I can rely on these benefits. Does anyone know the typical timeline for Washington ESD to approve unemployment claims? I've never filed before so I don't know what's normal.

From what I've seen, it usually takes Washington ESD about 2-3 weeks to process initial claims if there are no complications. The 'pending' status is normal - they're just verifying your employment history and eligibility. You should keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

•Thanks! Should I be worried that it's been 10 days already? I haven't gotten any requests for additional information or anything.

•No, 10 days is still within the normal timeframe. If they needed more info they would have contacted you by now.

Mine took exactly 3 weeks last year. Washington ESD is pretty backed up most of the time. Just keep filing your weekly claims and checking your account on SecureAccess Washington.

•Did you get any notification when yours was approved or did you just have to keep checking?

•I got an email notification and then could see the payment details in my account the next day.

The timeline really depends on your specific situation. If you had multiple employers or there are any questions about why you left your job, it could go into adjudication which takes much longer - sometimes 4-6 weeks or more.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that's straightforward enough.

•That should be pretty clear cut. Layoffs are usually processed faster than voluntary quits or terminations.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was super helpful when I needed to talk to someone about my pending claim.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay to talk to Washington ESD.

•I was frustrated with the phone system too, but it was worth it to actually get answers about my claim instead of just waiting and wondering.

•I might look into that if I don't hear anything by next week. The uncertainty is killing me.

Washington ESD's processing times are a joke. I've been waiting 5 weeks for mine to get approved and every time I call they just say 'it's still being reviewed.' Meanwhile my bills keep piling up.

•5 weeks?! That's ridiculous. Have you tried contacting your state representative or something?

•I'm starting to think about it. This is supposed to be a safety net but it's more like bureaucratic torture.

Just went through this process myself. Filed on a Monday and got approved exactly 18 days later. The key is to make sure you file your weekly claims every week even while it's pending - that way you get back pay for those weeks once approved.

•Good to know! I've been filing weekly but wasn't sure if that was necessary while pending.

•Definitely keep filing. You won't get paid for weeks you don't file claims for, even if your initial claim gets approved.

The worst part is not knowing if there's a problem or if it's just normal processing time. Washington ESD could really improve their communication about where claims stand in the process.

•Agreed! Even just a status update like 'under review - estimated completion in X days' would help so much.

•Yes! The uncertainty is almost worse than not having the money yet.

I work in HR and from what I understand, Washington ESD has to verify employment with all your recent employers before approving benefits. If any of those employers are slow to respond, it can delay the whole process.

•Oh interesting, I didn't know they had to verify with employers. My last company was pretty good about paperwork so hopefully that's not an issue.

•Usually larger companies respond quickly, but smaller businesses sometimes take their time getting back to Washington ESD.

Mine got approved in 2 weeks exactly, but I think I got lucky. A friend of mine waited almost 6 weeks because there was some confusion about her start date at her last job.

•6 weeks sounds brutal. Did she have to provide additional documentation or anything?

•Yeah, she had to get a letter from HR clarifying her employment dates. Once she submitted that it was approved within a few days.

Pro tip: check your Washington ESD account every morning around 8am. That's when they seem to update claim statuses most often. I noticed my approval showed up first thing in the morning.

•Thanks for the tip! I've been checking randomly throughout the day.

•I noticed the same thing! Early morning updates seem to be when they post most changes.

Don't stress too much about the 10 days. I've filed unemployment twice and both times it took right around 3 weeks. Washington ESD is slow but they do eventually get through all the claims.

•That's reassuring to hear from someone who's been through it multiple times.

•Yeah, the first time I was panicking just like you. Now I know to just be patient and keep filing weekly.

If you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually works. I used it last month when my claim was taking forever and got through to an agent who could see exactly where my claim was in the process.

•What kind of information were they able to give you that you couldn't see online?

Liam Duke
•They could see internal notes about what was holding up my claim and gave me a realistic timeline. Way better than just guessing from the online portal.

2-3 weeks is pretty standard but I've seen it take longer during busy periods. Summer and around holidays seem to slow things down at Washington ESD.

Drew Hathaway
•That makes sense. I filed in late February so hopefully it's not a particularly busy time.

•February should be fine. December and January are usually the worst months for processing delays.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims! My cousin made that mistake thinking she'd wait until her initial claim was approved and lost out on 3 weeks of benefits.

Drew Hathaway
•Oh wow, that's terrible! I've been filing weekly but good to know how important it is.

•Yeah, Washington ESD won't pay you retroactively for weeks you didn't file claims, even if your initial claim was pending.

The waiting is definitely the hardest part. Try to stay busy with job searching and other activities so you're not constantly checking your account status.

Drew Hathaway
•Good advice. I probably check it 5 times a day which isn't helping my anxiety.

Khalid Howes
•I did the same thing! Maybe limit yourself to checking once a day at most.

Just to add another data point - mine took exactly 17 days from filing to approval. Straightforward layoff situation, no complications. Keep your chin up, you're probably close!

•17 days gives me hope! I'm at day 10 so maybe just another week or so.
