How long does it take to get my Washington ESD unemployment benefits approved?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious about when I'll actually see money. My account shows the claim is being processed but there's no timeline given. I've never filed for unemployment before so I have no idea what's normal. Should I be worried that it's taking this long? I have bills due next week and I'm starting to panic. Does anyone know the typical timeframe for Washington ESD to approve a new claim?

The standard processing time for Washington ESD is usually 2-3 weeks for a straightforward claim. Since you filed 10 days ago, you're still within the normal window. The key factors that affect timing are whether your claim needs adjudication (if there are any eligibility questions) and how quickly your former employer responds to their notice.

•Thank you, that's reassuring. My former employer was pretty responsive when I left so hopefully they'll respond quickly to Washington ESD too.

•Yeah but even if the employer responds fast, Washington ESD can still take forever to actually process everything. I've been waiting 4 weeks now.

Check your account daily for any correspondence or requests for additional information. Sometimes Washington ESD will ask for documents and if you don't respond within the timeframe, it delays everything significantly. Also make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial approval.

•I have been filing weekly claims and checking every day. No requests for additional info so far.

•Good advice about the weekly claims - I made that mistake my first time filing and it cost me two weeks of benefits.

I was in your exact situation last month - filed and then sat waiting with no updates. After 3 weeks of calling Washington ESD constantly and never getting through, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real person at the unemployment office. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Honestly saved my sanity because I was about to lose my apartment.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•I know it sounds sketchy but it actually worked. They don't require any personal info upfront and the value was worth it for me when I was desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•I'm skeptical of any service that claims they can get you through to Washington ESD faster. Seems like a scam to prey on desperate people.

Don't panic yet! I know the waiting is horrible but 10 days is actually pretty normal. My claim took exactly 14 days to get approved and I received my first payment 3 days after that. The worst part is the uncertainty but Washington ESD is generally pretty good about processing claims within their stated timeframes.

•14 days total sounds reasonable. I guess I just need to be patient a few more days.

•you're lucky yours only took 14 days mine has been in adjudication for over a month

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 6 WEEKS for my claim to be processed and every time I call they just say 'we're experiencing high call volume' and hang up on me. This is peoples LIVES we're talking about not some bureaucratic game. How are we supposed to pay rent and buy food while they take their sweet time???

•I understand your frustration, but 6 weeks usually means there's an adjudication issue that needs to be resolved. Have you checked for any correspondence in your account?

•Of course I've checked! There's nothing there! The system just says 'claim under review' with no explanation whatsoever.

•Same here - 5 weeks and counting. At this point I'm wondering if I should just give up and find any job I can get.

For what it's worth, I had a similar timeline - filed on a Monday, got approved the following Friday (so about 11 business days). The payment showed up in my bank account 2 days later. I think Washington ESD has gotten better at processing claims compared to the chaos during COVID times.

•That timeline gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

•Just waited and made sure to file my weekly claims on time. I think being consistent with the weekly filing helps show you're serious about the process.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it really depends on your specific situation. If you were laid off due to company downsizing with clear documentation, it should be straightforward. But if there are any questions about your separation reason, it can take much longer for adjudication.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so hopefully that's straightforward enough. My employer said they would cooperate with the unemployment process.

•Budget cuts should be easy to verify. I was in a similar situation and got approved in 12 days.

Try calling Washington ESD first thing in the morning right when they open. I've had better luck getting through around 8 AM compared to later in the day. Though honestly even then it's hit or miss.

•I've tried calling several times but always get the busy message. I'll try the 8 AM approach tomorrow.

•I must have called 200 times before I gave up. The phone system is useless - they need to hire more staff.

Just wanted to add that I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked for me too. I was skeptical at first but after weeks of not being able to reach Washington ESD, I was desperate. Got connected to an adjudicator who explained exactly what was holding up my claim.

•OK now I'm curious about this Claimyr thing since two people have mentioned it. Did they ask for your Social Security number or other sensitive info?

Miguel Ramos
•No, they don't need your personal info. They just help you get through the phone queue. You still talk directly to the Washington ESD representative yourself.

I'm a little confused about something - do I need to keep filing weekly claims while waiting for initial approval? I've been doing it but I'm not sure if it matters since I haven't been approved yet.

•Yes, absolutely keep filing your weekly claims! If you don't file them, you won't get paid for those weeks even after your claim is approved. It's one of the most important things to remember.

•Thank you! I'll make sure to keep filing them then. The system is so confusing for first-timers.

The timing also depends on what day of the week you filed. I've heard that claims filed on Mondays get processed faster because they have the full week to work on them, but I'm not sure if that's actually true or just a rumor.

•I filed on a Wednesday and got approved in 10 days, so I don't think the day of the week matters that much.

•Good to know! I was worried because I filed on a Friday and thought maybe that would slow things down.

hang in there OP! the waiting is the worst part but most people do get approved eventually. just make sure you're doing everything right on your end (filing weekly claims, responding to any requests) and try not to stress too much about things outside your control

•Thanks for the encouragement. The waiting really is the hardest part when you have bills to pay.

I went through this same anxiety when I first filed. What helped me was setting up automatic bill payments for just the essentials and contacting my other creditors to explain the situation. Most are understanding if you're proactive about communicating.

•That's smart advice. I should probably call my landlord and let them know what's going on just in case.

Paolo Longo
•Definitely do that. Most landlords would rather work with you than deal with eviction proceedings.

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered that Claimyr service too and it's legit. Got me through to someone at the unemployment office in under 30 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. Worth checking out their demo video if you're at your wit's end.

The other thing to keep in mind is that even after your claim is approved, there can be a delay before you actually receive payment. My claim was approved on a Tuesday but I didn't get the direct deposit until the following Monday.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Good point. I set up direct deposit when I filed so hopefully that will speed things up once I'm approved.

•Direct deposit is definitely faster than waiting for a check in the mail. Smart move.

I know this doesn't help with your immediate anxiety, but Washington ESD has actually improved a lot since the pandemic. Back in 2020-2021 people were waiting months just to get someone on the phone. The current wait times are much more reasonable in comparison.

•That's true - I remember hearing horror stories during COVID about people waiting 6+ months for benefits. At least now it's usually just a few weeks.

•Yeah the system was completely overwhelmed back then. Things are definitely more stable now.
