I worked in HR for years and had to explain this to new employees all the time. Many people don't realize they're contributing until they see it on their first paystub. It's good that you're asking questions and understanding your deductions!
Just want to add that if you ever have questions about your specific deductions or contribution amounts, your HR department should be able to explain the breakdown. Every employer handles payroll slightly differently.
The amount you get also depends on when you apply. They look at different base periods depending on when you file, so timing can matter if you had varying income throughout the year.
If you end up having issues with your claim or questions about your benefit amount, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my weekly benefit amount being calculated wrong. Much easier than spending all day calling.
The other thing to keep in mind is that even after your claim is approved, there can be a delay before you actually receive payment. My claim was approved on a Tuesday but I didn't get the direct deposit until the following Monday.
I know this doesn't help with your immediate anxiety, but Washington ESD has actually improved a lot since the pandemic. Back in 2020-2021 people were waiting months just to get someone on the phone. The current wait times are much more reasonable in comparison.
One more thing - if you're eligible for severance or other benefits from your employer, ask HR about the timing. Sometimes they can structure the payments to minimize the impact on your unemployment benefits.
Just want to echo what others said about applying ASAP. I waited a week thinking I needed to 'settle in' to being unemployed first, and I basically lost a week of benefits. You can always file and then deal with any complications later.

The unemployment system in Washington is actually pretty good compared to other states I've lived in. The online portal works most of the time and payments are reliable.

•Agreed. My brother in Florida had a nightmare experience with their unemployment system.

•That's reassuring to hear. I was worried about dealing with a bunch of bureaucratic hassles.

One thing to watch out for - if you move to another state while collecting Washington unemployment, you need to notify them right away. Interstate claims can get complicated.
