How do I know if I get unemployment benefits approved by Washington ESD?
I submitted my unemployment application through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm getting really anxious about whether I'll actually get approved. My employer laid me off due to downsizing and I worked there for 2 years full-time. I've been checking my account on the ESD site every day but it just says 'claim under review' and doesn't give me any real information. How long does it usually take to find out if you're approved? And where exactly do I look to see my benefit amount? I'm worried I filled something out wrong or they need more information from me.

The typical processing time for Washington ESD is usually 2-3 weeks for straightforward claims like yours. Since you were laid off and worked full-time for 2 years, you should qualify. You'll get a determination letter either by mail or in your eServices account under 'Letters and Documents.' Your weekly benefit amount will also show up there once approved.

•Thanks! I haven't gotten any letters yet but I'll keep checking. Should I be worried that it's been 10 days already?

•10 days is still normal, especially if they're verifying employment. Don't worry unless you hit the 3-week mark without any communication.

You can also check your 'Claim Summary' page - it should show your weekly benefit amount once it's calculated. Mine took about 12 days and then boom, everything showed up at once.

•I've been checking that page too but it's still blank. Good to know 12 days is normal though!

If Washington ESD needs more info they'll usually send you a fact-finding questionnaire or ask for documents. The fact that you haven't gotten one of those is actually a good sign. Also make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - you can backdate but it's easier to just file them.

•Wait, I'm supposed to file weekly claims before I'm approved? I thought I had to wait for the determination first.

•Nope, you should file weekly claims starting the week after you apply. You won't get paid until approved but you need to establish those claim weeks.

ugh I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days to check on my similar situation and I can NEVER get through. The phone just rings and rings or I get a busy signal. Anyone know the best time to call?

•Mornings right when they open at 8am are usually best, but honestly the phone system is swamped. I had better luck using the online messaging system.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual Washington ESD agent. They basically handle the calling for you and connect you when they reach someone. Saved me hours of frustration - you can check it out at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

The determination letter is what you're waiting for. It'll have your weekly benefit amount and tell you if you're approved or denied. For a layoff situation like yours you should be fine assuming you made enough wages in your base period.

•What's the base period? I see that term everywhere but don't really understand it.

Jackie Martinez
•It's the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. So if you filed in January 2025, they'd look at your wages from October 2023 through September 2024.

just went through this same thing last month - took exactly 2 weeks and 3 days to get my determination. was approved for $467/week. the waiting is the worst part but hang in there

Bruno Simmons
•That's a decent amount! How do they calculate what you get?
0 coins
Lia Quinn
•it's based on your highest earning quarter in the base period, then they use a formula. mine was about 60% of what I was making weekly

Make sure you're also registering with WorkSource WA if you haven't already. It's required for most claims and they check that you're doing job searches.

Bruno Simmons
•Oh no, I haven't done that yet. Is that going to delay my claim?

•It shouldn't delay your initial approval but you'll need it for ongoing eligibility. Better to do it sooner rather than later.

The ESD system is SO confusing. I got my determination but then had to wait another week for the payment to actually show up in my account. And don't even get me started on the job search requirements...

•What are the job search requirements? I keep seeing references to that but haven't found clear info.

•You have to do 3 job search activities per week and log them. Activities include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc.

For anyone struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone like that other person mentioned - I used Claimyr recently and it was a game changer. They basically wait on hold for you and call you back when they get an agent on the line. Way better than spending your whole day redialing.

•How much does something like that cost? Sounds too good to be true.

•It's actually pretty reasonable for what you get. The stress relief alone was worth it for me. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

Your situation sounds exactly like mine was - layoff, good work history, no issues. I got approved in 13 days and my first payment came 3 days after that. The hardest part is just waiting and not knowing.

Bruno Simmons
•That's really encouraging to hear! Did you get any kind of notification when it was approved or did you just have to keep checking?

•I got an email notification that I had a new letter in my account, then when I logged in the determination was there along with my benefit amount.

Don't forget that even after you're approved, your first payment might be delayed by the waiting week. Washington ESD makes you serve one unpaid week before benefits start.

Bruno Simmons
•Wait, so even if I'm approved I don't get paid for the first week? That seems unfair.
0 coins
Issac Nightingale
•Yeah it's frustrating but that's how it works. The waiting week is basically a penalty-free week that doesn't count toward your benefit total.

I'm in week 3 of waiting and getting really stressed about bills. At what point should I be worried that something's wrong with my claim?

•If you haven't heard anything by week 4, definitely try to contact them. Most claims are processed within 21 business days unless there's an issue.

•This is exactly when I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD. I was at the 3-week mark and getting panicked about what was happening with my claim. Turned out they just needed one more piece of employment verification but hadn't notified me properly.

The determination letter will also tell you how long your benefits will last. Usually 26 weeks unless there are special circumstances or extensions available.

Bruno Simmons
•26 weeks should be enough time to find something new. Hopefully the job market cooperates!

Pro tip: once you're approved, set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Checks can take forever to arrive and sometimes get lost in the mail.

•Good advice! I think I set that up when I first applied but I'll double-check.

been checking this thread because I'm in the same boat - filed 8 days ago and anxiously waiting. at least I know I'm not alone in this limbo period

•Solidarity! It's weirdly comforting to know other people are going through the same waiting game.

Just remember that once you start getting benefits, you'll need to file every week by the deadline (usually Sunday) or you'll miss that week's payment. Set up a reminder on your phone.

Bruno Simmons
•Good point! I'll definitely set up a reminder. Missing a week's payment would be terrible.

The Washington ESD website also has a 'Claim Status' page that updates throughout the process. It's not super detailed but it'll show if your claim is pending, approved, or if there are any issues.

Bruno Simmons
•I've been checking that obsessively! Still just says 'pending' but good to know that's where updates will show up.

OP, based on what you've described (layoff, 2 years employment, no issues), you should definitely be approved. The process just takes time and Washington ESD doesn't give much feedback while they're processing. Hang in there!

Bruno Simmons
•Thanks for the reassurance! This thread has been so helpful. I feel much better about the wait now.

One more thing - make sure your contact info is up to date in your account. Sometimes Washington ESD tries to reach people and can't get through, which can delay the process.

•Just checked and everything looks current. Thanks for thinking of that detail!
