How to know if you were approved for Washington ESD unemployment - checking claim status?
I submitted my initial unemployment application through Washington ESD three days ago and I'm getting anxious about whether it was approved or not. I can log into my account but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for to know if my claim went through. The status just says 'processing' but doesn't give me any real information. Is there a specific place in the system where it will tell me if I got approved? How long does it usually take to find out? I really need to know because I have bills coming due and I'm trying to figure out if I should start looking for temporary work or wait for benefits.

Check your 'Claim Summary' page in your Washington ESD account. When you're approved, it will show your weekly benefit amount and the effective date of your claim. You should also receive a determination letter either by mail or in your eServices inbox.

•Thanks! I see the Claim Summary but it still just shows 'pending determination.' How long did yours take?

•Mine took about 5 business days for a straightforward claim. If there are any issues like job separation questions, it could go to adjudication which takes longer.

The determination letter is key - that's your official approval. But honestly, trying to get through to Washington ESD by phone to check status is nearly impossible with their call volume.

•So true about the phone situation. I spent hours trying to call them last month.

•Actually, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents when you can't reach them yourself. They have a system that calls for you and connects you when an agent is available. There's a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to check on my claim status.

•That sounds interesting but is it legit? I don't want to give my info to some random service.

Look for these specific indicators of approval in your Washington ESD account: 1) Weekly benefit amount listed (not $0), 2) Claim balance shown, 3) Next payable week date displayed, 4) Status changes from 'pending' to 'active'. The determination letter will also explicitly state if you're monetarily eligible and any work search requirements.

•This is super helpful! I'll check for these specific things. What does it mean if it shows a weekly benefit amount but still says pending?

Adriana Cohn
•That usually means you're monetarily eligible but they might still be reviewing your job separation or other eligibility factors. The monetary determination comes first.

•Yeah I had this exact situation - showed my benefit amount but stayed pending for another week while they verified my last employer info.

UGH the Washington ESD system is so confusing! Why can't they just send a simple email that says APPROVED or DENIED instead of making us hunt through all these different pages and decode what everything means???

•I feel you! The whole system seems designed to confuse people. Even when you do get approved, figuring out when you'll actually get paid is another mystery.

•The system is definitely not user-friendly, but once you know what to look for it gets easier to navigate.

Pro tip: set up text alerts in your account settings. Washington ESD will send you notifications when there are updates to your claim, including when you're approved. Also check your eServices inbox regularly - sometimes important notices only show up there.

Sofia Peña
•Good idea about the text alerts! I didn't even know that was an option. Where do you find that in the settings?

Brandon Parker
•Go to 'Account Settings' then 'Communication Preferences' - you can choose email and/or text notifications for different types of updates.

Just wanted to add that even after approval, your first payment might be delayed by the waiting week. Don't panic if you don't see money right away even with an approved claim.

Sofia Peña
•Waiting week? What's that about?
0 coins
Chloe Zhang
•Washington has a one-week waiting period before benefits start. So even if approved, your first payable week might not result in payment. It's confusing but normal.

Adriana Cohn
•Actually, the waiting week was suspended during COVID and I believe it's still suspended. You should get paid for your first eligible week now.

Another thing to watch for - if your claim goes to adjudication, you'll see that status in your account. That means they need additional information before making a decision, and it can take several weeks to resolve.

•What triggers adjudication? I'm worried mine might go there.

Sophia Carter
•Common reasons include job separation issues (if you quit or were fired), discrepancies in your work history, or if your former employer contests the claim.

Brandon Parker
•If you do end up in adjudication and need to speak with someone at Washington ESD about it, definitely consider using Claimyr. Adjudication questions really need to be handled by talking to an actual person, and their service makes that so much easier than trying to call yourself.

I'm in the same boat - filed 4 days ago and still showing processing. This waiting is killing me! At least now I know what to look for in my account.

•Right? The anxiety is real when you're depending on this money. Hopefully we both hear something soon.

•Hang in there both of you. The waiting is the worst part but most claims do get approved if you meet the basic requirements.

One more thing - make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. You can't get paid for weeks you don't claim, even retroactively.
0 coins
Sofia Peña
•Wait, I can file weekly claims before being approved? I thought I had to wait.
0 coins
Aaron Boston
•Yes! You should file for every week you're unemployed, starting with your first week. The system will hold those claims until your initial claim is approved.

Adriana Cohn
•This is crucial advice. I've seen people lose weeks of benefits because they didn't realize they needed to keep filing weekly claims during the approval process.

Does anyone know if there's a difference between the determination letter and the approval? I got some letter about monetary eligibility but I'm still confused about my status.
0 coins
Adriana Cohn
•The monetary determination letter tells you if you earned enough wages to qualify for benefits and what your weekly amount would be. You might still need a separate determination about your job separation before you're fully approved.
0 coins
Kristian Bishop
•That makes sense! So I might get multiple letters before everything is finalized?
0 coins
Aaron Boston
•Exactly. Monetary eligibility first, then job separation determination if needed, then ongoing eligibility as you file weekly claims.

Why does everything with Washington ESD have to be so complicated? Other states seem to have much clearer systems. This whole process is unnecessarily stressful.

•Tell me about it. When you're already stressed about being unemployed, the last thing you need is a confusing bureaucratic maze to navigate.

•I hear you but honestly once you get through the initial approval process, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward. It's just that first part that's confusing.

For anyone still struggling to get answers about their claim status, I really recommend checking out Claimyr. When I was in limbo waiting for approval and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD, they got me connected to an agent who could explain exactly what was happening with my claim. Worth every penny for the peace of mind.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already tight on money.

•I totally understand being budget-conscious right now. The value for me was avoiding weeks of uncertainty and stress. Check out their site at claimyr.com to see if it makes sense for your situation.

Just to add a success story - I filed last month and got my approval notification through text after 6 days. The determination letter showed up in my eServices inbox the same day. Once approved, my first payment came within 3 business days of filing my weekly claim.

Sofia Peña
•That's encouraging! What did the text notification say exactly?

Kaitlyn Otto
•It was something like 'Washington ESD: Your unemployment claim has been processed. Check your eServices account for details.' Pretty simple but it let me know to check my account.

I keep refreshing my account like every hour hoping to see a change in status. This is driving me crazy! How do you all stay sane during this waiting period?
0 coins
Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•I'm doing the same thing! It's become an obsession at this point.
0 coins
Aaron Boston
•Try to check just once a day, maybe in the morning. Constantly refreshing won't make it go faster and will just increase your anxiety.

•I distracted myself by organizing all my job search materials and updating my resume. Staying productive helped with the waiting anxiety.

Quick question - if you're approved, does the weekly benefit amount show up immediately or does that take additional time? I see some numbers in my account but I'm not sure if they're real or just placeholders.
0 coins
Adriana Cohn
•The weekly benefit amount should appear as soon as you're monetarily approved. If you see a specific dollar amount (not $0), that's likely your actual benefit amount.

Ellie Kim
•Thanks! It's showing $287 so I guess that's probably my real amount then.

Does anyone know if Washington ESD sends approval notifications on weekends or just business days? I filed on a Friday and I'm wondering if I might hear something over the weekend.
0 coins
Aaron Boston
•In my experience, most determinations are processed during business days. Weekend updates are rare but not impossible.

Kaitlyn Otto
•I got my notification on a Saturday actually, so it can happen. But weekdays are more common for sure.

This thread has been super helpful! I was getting worried because it's been 5 days with no word, but it sounds like that's pretty normal. Going to check for those specific approval indicators mentioned earlier.

Sofia Peña
•Same here! I feel much better knowing what to look for and that other people are in the same situation.

•Glad this was helpful. Remember, no news is usually good news with Washington ESD - if there were major issues, you'd typically hear about them quickly.

One last tip - screenshot everything once you're approved! Save images of your determination letter, benefit amount, claim balance, etc. It's good to have records in case there are any system glitches later.
