How do you know if you get approved for unemployment benefits in Washington?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 5 days ago and I'm getting anxious about whether I'll be approved. The online portal just shows my claim is being processed but doesn't give any timeline or indication of what to expect. I've never filed for unemployment before so I'm not sure what the approval process looks like. Do they send you an email notification? Does the status change on the SecureAccess Washington site? How long does Washington ESD usually take to let you know if you're approved or denied? I really need to know so I can plan my finances accordingly.

You'll get a determination letter either by mail or through your eServices account, usually within 1-2 weeks of filing. The letter will tell you if you're approved, your weekly benefit amount, and when to start filing weekly claims. If approved, you should also see your monetary determination showing your base period wages.

•Thanks! Should I be checking my eServices account daily or will they email me when there's an update?

•I'd check every few days. They don't always send email notifications so logging into eServices is more reliable.

it took me like 3 weeks to hear anything back and even then i had to call to find out what was going on with my claim

•Oh no, that's longer than I was hoping. Did you eventually get approved?

Zara Rashid
•yeah but only after calling like 50 times to get through to someone

The approval notification process has actually gotten better recently. You'll receive a monetary determination letter first if you qualify based on your work history. This shows your weekly benefit amount. Then you get an eligibility determination about whether you meet all the requirements. Both should arrive within 10 business days typically.

•What happens if there are issues with my eligibility? Do they tell you what needs to be fixed?

Luca Romano
•Yes, if there are issues they'll send you a fact-finding questionnaire or request additional documentation. You'll have a deadline to respond.

I had such a hard time reaching Washington ESD when my claim was stuck in limbo for weeks. Finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which actually got me through to a real person within minutes instead of hours of busy signals. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Turned out my claim just needed one simple verification but nobody could tell me that until I actually spoke to an agent.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service before. How much does it cost?

•They focus on getting you connected rather than charging big fees. Worth checking out if you end up needing to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•Wait this sounds too good to be true, is this legit?

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS A JOKE! I waited 6 weeks for approval and when I finally got through they told me I was missing ONE piece of documentation that they never told me about. Meanwhile I'm behind on rent and utilities. This system is designed to make people give up.

•I feel your frustration. What documentation were you missing? Maybe that will help others avoid the same issue.

•They wanted additional proof of my separation reason even though I had already uploaded my termination letter. Apparently wasn't detailed enough for them.

For anyone waiting to hear back - you can also check if your claim is in adjudication by looking at the status on your homepage. If it says 'Adjudication in Progress' that means they're reviewing something specific about your claim and it might take longer than the standard timeframe.

Anastasia Fedorov
•Mine doesn't say adjudication, just 'processing' - is that better or worse?

Aisha Khan
•Processing is normal for new claims. Adjudication usually means there's a specific issue they need to investigate further.

can someone explain what all these different letters mean? i got like 3 different things in the mail and im confused about which one is the actual approval

Luca Romano
•You likely got: 1) Monetary determination (shows your benefit amount), 2) Eligibility determination (approved/denied), and 3) Handbook with instructions. The eligibility determination is your actual approval or denial.

•ok that makes sense, thanks. the eligibility one says approved so i think im good

Just went through this process last month. Pro tip: even if you're approved, you still need to file your weekly claims every week or you won't get paid. Don't make the mistake I did of thinking approval meant automatic payments.

Anastasia Fedorov
•Good to know! Do the weekly claims start right away or do you wait for some kind of waiting period?
0 coins
Ethan Taylor
•There's usually a one-week waiting period for the first claim, but you still need to file that first week - you just won't get paid for it.

Also worth mentioning - if you're denied, you have 30 days to appeal the decision. The denial letter will include instructions on how to request an appeal hearing. Don't just accept a denial if you think it's wrong.

Anastasia Fedorov
•How do you know if a denial is worth appealing? Are there common reasons people get wrongly denied?
0 coins
Sean Doyle
•Common appeal-worthy denials include incorrect separation reason, wages not properly credited, or Washington ESD not considering all relevant information. If you have documentation that contradicts their decision, definitely appeal.

This whole process gave me so much anxiety too. I kept refreshing my account multiple times a day waiting for an update. In hindsight I wish I had just been patient - it all worked out in the end and the waiting didn't change anything.

•That's exactly what I'm doing right now! Good to know I'm not the only one who gets anxious about this stuff.

speaking of calling washington esd - has anyone tried that claimyr thing mentioned earlier? i might need to call about my job search requirements but the phone lines are always jammed

•Yeah that's actually how I found out about it too. Super helpful when you actually need to speak to a human instead of getting busy signals for hours.

Quick question - if you get approved, do they backdate the payments to when you first became unemployed or just from when you filed the claim?

Luca Romano
•Benefits are effective from the Sunday of the week you filed your claim, not from when you became unemployed. That's why it's important to file as soon as possible after job loss.

AstroAdventurer
•Ah that makes sense. Glad I filed right away then!

I remember being in your exact situation. The uncertainty is the worst part. Once you get that first determination letter, whether it's approval or denial, at least you know where you stand and can plan accordingly.

Anastasia Fedorov
•Exactly! I just want to know either way so I can figure out my next steps.

Make sure you're checking both your physical mailbox and your eServices messages. Sometimes they send things one way and not the other, and you don't want to miss important deadlines because you were only checking one place.

•Good point, I'll make sure to check both regularly.

The whole system would be so much less stressful if they just sent email notifications for major updates. Having to constantly log in to check status is frustrating when you're already dealing with job loss stress.

•Agreed! Even just a simple 'your claim status has been updated' email would help so much.

Has anyone here ever been approved and then had their benefits stopped later? I'm worried about that happening even if I do get approved initially.
0 coins
Luca Romano
•Benefits can be stopped if you don't meet ongoing requirements like job search or if Washington ESD discovers new information. As long as you follow all the rules and report accurately, you should be fine.

Liam Fitzgerald
•That's reassuring, thank you. I'll make sure to stay on top of all the requirements.

One thing that helped my peace of mind was calling the claims center just to confirm they had received my application and that there weren't any obvious issues. Even though I couldn't get detailed info, at least I knew it was in the system.

Anastasia Fedorov
•That's smart! Though I hear it's really hard to get through on the phone.

•It is tough, but sometimes just that basic confirmation is worth the wait if you can get through.

For what it's worth, Washington ESD has gotten better about processing times compared to during the pandemic. Most straightforward claims do get processed within the 1-2 week timeframe they advertise now.

Anastasia Fedorov
•That's encouraging to hear! Hopefully mine falls into that straightforward category.

definitely try claimyr if you need to talk to someone at washington esd. i was skeptical at first but it actually worked when i needed to get through about my pending claim. saved me probably hours of calling and getting busy signals

The waiting is definitely the hardest part. Try to stay busy with job searching and other productive activities while you wait. The determination will come when it comes, and stressing about it won't make it happen faster.

•You're absolutely right. I should focus on things I can control rather than obsessing over the claim status. Thanks for the reminder!
