How will I know if I'm approved for unemployment - waiting for Washington ESD response
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious about whether it was approved or not. I've been checking my account on SecureAccess Washington every day but the status just says 'claim under review.' I haven't received any letters in the mail yet either. For those who have been through this process before, how exactly does Washington ESD notify you when your claim is approved? Will I get an email, a letter, or do I just have to keep checking online? I'm worried I might miss something important.

Washington ESD will send you a determination letter in the mail - that's the official notification of whether you're approved or denied. It usually takes 1-3 weeks from when you file. You should also see the status change in your online account when they make a decision.

•Thanks! Should I be worried that it's been 10 days already? I'm starting to panic about bills coming due.

•10 days is still normal, especially if there are any issues they need to verify with your previous employer. The determination letter will explain everything.

You'll get multiple notifications actually. First the determination letter by mail telling you if you're approved and your weekly benefit amount. Then if approved, you'll get instructions on how to file your weekly claims. Check both your online account and mailbox regularly.

•What if I moved recently? I updated my address in the system but I'm worried the letter might go to my old place.

•You can call Washington ESD to confirm they have your current address on file. Better to be safe than miss important mail.

•Good luck getting through on the phone though - I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my own claim issues and can never get past the busy signal.

I had success using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them the normal way. It's a service that helps you connect with an actual agent - saved me hours of calling. You can check it out at claimyr.com, they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before - does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it worked for me when I needed to check on my adjudication status. Way better than spending my whole day redialing the same number.

•That might be helpful if I need to call about my address change. Thanks for sharing!

The determination letter is key but also watch your online account dashboard. When I was approved, my account showed my weekly benefit amount and allowed me to file my first weekly claim. That was actually how I knew before the letter arrived.

•What section of the account should I be looking at specifically? I see a bunch of different tabs and links.

•Look for 'Weekly Claims' or 'File Weekly Claim' - when that becomes available, it usually means you're approved.

ugh the waiting is the worst part! i filed 3 weeks ago and STILL haven't heard anything back from washington esd... starting to think they lost my application or something

•3 weeks is getting long - you might want to call and check if there are any issues with your claim. Sometimes they need additional documentation.

•i've tried calling like 50 times but always get the busy signal... this system is broken

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it's designed for situations like this when you can't get through normally.

Also keep in mind that if you're approved, you'll need to start filing weekly claims right away to actually receive benefits. The approval just means you're eligible - you still have to certify each week that you're unemployed and looking for work.

•How soon after approval do I need to file the first weekly claim? Is there a deadline?
0 coins
Gianni Serpent
•You should file for each week you want benefits, starting with the week you became unemployed. Don't wait too long or you might miss out on weeks you're entitled to.

Just a heads up - even if you're approved initially, Washington ESD can always review your claim later. I got approved and then 6 weeks later they started an adjudication process because my former employer contested it. So don't assume approval means you're in the clear forever.

•Oh great, something else to worry about! What happened with your case?

•It worked out fine in the end but took another month to resolve. Just saying to be prepared for possible complications down the road.

The determination letter will also tell you your appeal rights if you're denied. Make sure to read the whole thing carefully - it has important dates and requirements.

•Yes! And if you disagree with their decision, you only have 30 days to appeal, so don't delay.

•Hopefully I won't need to worry about appeals - keeping my fingers crossed for approval!

I'm in the same boat as you - filed 2 weeks ago and checking my account obsessively. The uncertainty is killing me! At least we're not alone in this waiting game.

Pro tip: take a screenshot of your claim confirmation when you first filed. I forgot my confirmation number and it made things more complicated when I had to call Washington ESD later.

•Good advice! I think I still have the email confirmation saved somewhere.

•Also write down the date you filed and your last day of work - you'll need those details for weekly claims.

The whole Washington ESD system is so slow and outdated. Other states notify people way faster than this. But hang in there - you'll eventually get your answer.

•Yeah the technology feels like it's from 2005. But at least it usually works eventually.

If you're approved, make sure to set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting benefits by check takes way longer than electronic deposit.

Miranda Singer
•I think I set that up when I filed but I should double-check. Thanks for the reminder!

•You can update your payment method in your online account anytime. Direct deposit is definitely the way to go.

Keep filing those weekly claims even while you're waiting for the determination! If you're approved retroactively, you'll want to have already claimed all the weeks you were unemployed.

•Wait, I can file weekly claims before I'm officially approved? I thought I had to wait for the approval letter.

•You should be able to file weekly claims as soon as your initial claim is processed, even if the determination isn't final yet. Check your online account.

•Actually, I think you need to wait for approval before filing weekly claims. Don't want to give wrong information here.

Document everything! Save all emails, take screenshots of your account, keep records of your job search activities. If any issues come up later, you'll be glad you have the paperwork.

Miranda Singer
•Good point - I should start keeping better records now before I forget the details.

The waiting really is the hardest part. I remember checking my account multiple times a day when I first filed. Try to stay busy with job applications and don't let the anxiety consume you.

•You're right, I should focus on job searching instead of obsessively checking my claim status. Easier said than done though!

•Job searching while waiting for unemployment approval is like a double stress situation. But staying productive definitely helps with the anxiety.

One more thing - if you're approved, make sure you understand the job search requirements. You'll need to log your job search activities each week when you file your weekly claim.

Miranda Singer
•How many job applications do I need to do each week? I've been applying to maybe 2-3 jobs.

Isabella Russo
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week in Washington, but double-check the requirements when you get your determination letter.

Claimyr has been a lifesaver for me with Washington ESD issues. Used it twice now when I couldn't get through on my own. Definitely recommend it if you need to speak with someone urgently about your claim status.

I'm in a similar situation - filed my claim about 8 days ago and constantly refreshing my SecureAccess account hoping for an update! Reading through everyone's experiences here is really helpful. It sounds like 10 days is still within the normal timeframe, so I'm trying to be patient. The hardest part is not knowing if there are any issues with my application or if it's just taking the standard processing time. I've been keeping busy with job applications like someone mentioned, which does help with the anxiety a bit. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences - it's reassuring to know we're all going through this together!
