How do I know if I get approved for unemployment - Washington ESD notification process?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious about whether it was approved or not. I haven't received any mail yet and when I log into my account it just shows my claim is pending. How will I know if Washington ESD approved my claim? Do they send an email, letter, or do I just check online? I'm worried I might miss something important.

You'll get a determination letter in the mail within 2-3 weeks of filing. It'll tell you if you're approved and what your weekly benefit amount is. You should also see updates in your SecureAccess Washington account.

•Thanks! Should I be worried that it's been 10 days with no letter yet?

Norah Quay
•No, 10 days is normal. They say up to 21 days for a decision, sometimes longer if there are issues with your claim.

Check your online account regularly. Mine showed approved status before I got the letter in the mail. Look for the 'Monetary Determination' section.

•Where exactly do I look for that? I'm logged in but don't see anything called Monetary Determination.

•Go to 'View and Maintain Account Information' then look for 'Payment Information' or 'Benefit Information'. It might be under different menu names.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Was way easier than calling myself and getting hung up on constantly.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work to get through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah, worked for me. I was able to talk to someone about my claim status instead of just guessing from the online portal.

•I used claimyr.com too when I couldn't figure out why my claim was taking so long. They got me connected to someone who explained the whole process.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. I remember checking my account like 10 times a day when I first filed. You'll get a 'Monetary Determination' letter that shows your weekly benefit amount if approved, or an 'Eligibility Determination' if there are issues.

•What kind of issues would cause them to deny the claim?

•Usually stuff like not earning enough in your base period, being fired for misconduct, or quitting without good cause. They investigate all that stuff.

Make sure you're still filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval! A lot of people don't realize you have to do that from the beginning.

•Wait, I have to file weekly claims before I'm even approved??

Bethany Groves
•Yes! You have to file for every week you want to claim benefits, even while your initial claim is pending. Don't miss any weeks or you'll lose those benefits.

•This is super important - you can't go back and claim weeks you missed filing for.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing, i never know where to look for anything. why cant they just send a simple email when your approved?

Leo McDonald
•I think they're worried about fraud if they send benefit info by email. But I agree the website is terrible to navigate.

•makes sense i guess but still annoying

If your claim goes into adjudication (they need to investigate something), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Mine took 7 weeks because they had to verify my job separation.

Kelsey Chin
•How do you know if it's in adjudication? Does it say that somewhere?

Rebecca Johnston
•Yeah, it'll show 'Adjudication in Progress' or something similar in your account. They might also send you forms to fill out.

Pro tip: sign up for text alerts in your account if you haven't already. They'll send you updates when there are changes to your claim status.

•Where do I find that option? I don't remember seeing it when I set up my account.

•Should be under account settings or preferences. It's easy to miss but super helpful for staying updated.

I'm going through the same thing right now. Filed 2 weeks ago and nothing yet. The uncertainty is killing me because I need to know if I should be looking for other income sources.

•Exactly! I'm in the same boat. Bills don't stop coming just because Washington ESD is taking their time.

•I feel you both. It's stressful not knowing. Just keep filing those weekly claims and hopefully you'll hear something soon.

When I got approved, I received like 3 different letters over a week. One was the monetary determination showing my benefit amount, another was about job search requirements, and one about fraud penalties. Don't panic if you get multiple letters - it's normal.

•Good to know! I would probably freak out if I got multiple official letters in a row.

•Yeah I thought I was in trouble at first lol. But they're just covering all their bases with the paperwork.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely horrible. I spent hours trying to get through when I had questions about my claim. That Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually sounds pretty useful.

Jessica Nolan
•Yeah, that's exactly why I started using it. The regular phone lines are basically useless with how busy they always are.

•Might have to check out that claimyr.com site if I run into issues. Getting hung up on constantly is so frustrating.

Once you're approved, you'll also get a debit card in the mail for your benefits. That usually comes a few days after the approval letters.

Kelsey Chin
•Is that automatic or do I need to request it?
0 coins
Grant Vikers
•It's automatic. Washington ESD sends it to everyone unless you specifically opt for direct deposit instead.

Been waiting 3 weeks for mine and still nothing. Starting to think something went wrong with my application.

Norah Quay
•3 weeks is getting to the longer side but not unheard of. Have you tried calling to check on the status?

Giovanni Martello
•Tried calling but could never get through. Maybe I should try that Claimyr thing people keep mentioning.

Just remember that even if you get approved, you still have to meet all the ongoing requirements like job searching and filing weekly claims. The approval is just the first step.

Kelsey Chin
•Yeah I've been reading about the job search requirements. Seems like a lot of hoops to jump through.

Savannah Weiner
•It is, but it's worth it if you need the income support. Just stay on top of all the requirements and you'll be fine.

The worst part is not knowing if you did something wrong on the application. I kept second-guessing every answer I gave when I was waiting for my decision.

Kelsey Chin
•That's exactly how I feel right now! Like maybe I should have answered something differently.

•I'm sure you did fine. They'll contact you if they need clarification on anything.

Check your spam folder too! I almost missed an important email from Washington ESD because it got filtered into spam.

Kelsey Chin
•Good thinking! I hadn't checked there. Going to look now.

Libby Hassan
•Yeah, sometimes their emails get flagged as spam for some reason. Always worth checking just in case.

If you end up getting denied, don't panic. You have 30 days to appeal the decision and they'll review your case again. Sometimes it's just a matter of providing additional documentation.
0 coins
Kelsey Chin
•That's somewhat reassuring. I hope it doesn't come to that but good to know there's a process.
0 coins
Hunter Hampton
•Yeah, appeals are pretty common. The initial review is sometimes rushed so the appeal process can catch things they missed.

Hang in there! The waiting is tough but most people do get approved if they meet the basic requirements. Just keep filing those weekly claims and checking your account regularly.

•Thanks for the encouragement! This whole process is more stressful than I expected.

•I totally get it. It's a lot when you're already dealing with being unemployed. But you'll get through it.
