How will I know if I'm approved for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm anxiously waiting to hear back. I keep checking my account but it just says 'claim under review'. How exactly does Washington ESD notify you when your claim gets approved or denied? Do they send an email, letter, or do I just need to keep checking online? I'm worried I might miss something important. Also, if I get approved, when would I expect to see my first payment?

Washington ESD will send you a determination letter in the mail - that's the official notification. You'll also see status updates in your SecureAccess Washington account. The letter will clearly state if you're approved or denied and include payment information if approved.

•Thanks! How long does the mail usually take? I'm checking my mailbox every day now.

•Usually takes 3-5 business days after they make the decision. Keep checking your online account too - sometimes the status updates there first.

10 days is pretty normal for the initial review. Mine took almost 2 weeks before I heard anything. You'll get a letter in the mail with all the details about your weekly benefit amount and when payments start.

•That's somewhat reassuring. I was starting to think something went wrong with my application.

If you're having trouble getting through to check on your claim status, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me actually reach a Washington ESD agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped when I was stuck waiting for weeks with no updates.

•Interesting, I haven't heard of that service before. Is it legitimate?

•Yeah, it's legit. They basically help you get through the phone queue so you can actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of getting disconnected or waiting hours.

•I was skeptical at first too but it actually worked. Got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of the usual 3+ hour wait times.

ugh i've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing!! this is ridiculous, i need to pay my rent. how is this system so broken???

•3 weeks might mean your claim went into adjudication. That happens when they need to verify employment information or investigate something. Did you receive any requests for additional documentation?

•no nothing at all. just says pending review or whatever. this is so frustrating

Check your account early in the morning around 6-7 AM. That's when Washington ESD usually updates their system overnight. I found my approval showed up online before the letter arrived.

•Good tip! I'll start checking first thing in the morning.

•This is true! I saw my status change at like 6:30 AM on a Tuesday. Got the letter 3 days later.

Just to be clear - once you're approved, you'll need to file weekly claims to actually receive payments. The approval just means you're eligible. You still need to certify each week that you're looking for work and available.

Manny Lark
•Right, I remember reading about that. Do the weekly claims start immediately after approval?

Rita Jacobs
•You'll be able to file for any weeks since your claim started, including the waiting week. But yes, you need to file weekly going forward to keep getting paid.

My experience was different - they called me! Got a call from a Washington ESD adjudicator who had questions about my separation. Scared me at first but it was just to clarify a few things. Got approved 2 days later.

•Wow, I didn't know they sometimes call. Did they leave a voicemail first or just call randomly?

•They left a voicemail asking me to call back within 48 hours. Made sure to call right away since I'd heard horror stories about missing their calls.

Also keep in mind that if you worked for multiple employers in the past 18 months, Washington ESD needs to verify information with all of them. That can delay the process if any employer is slow to respond.

•I only had one employer so hopefully that speeds things up.

The determination letter will have EVERYTHING you need to know - your weekly benefit amount, how long you can collect, any special requirements, and when payments start. Keep that letter safe!

•Will do! I'm hoping to see it in my mailbox soon.

•Yeah definitely save it. I needed to reference mine multiple times for different things.

If you get denied don't panic - you have 30 days to file an appeal. The letter will explain exactly why you were denied and what you can do about it.

•Hopefully I won't need that information, but good to know just in case.

I was in the same boat last month - constantly refreshing the website. Using Claimyr to actually talk to someone really helped ease my anxiety. The agent was able to tell me exactly where my claim stood in the process.

•That does sound helpful. The not knowing is the worst part.

•Same here! I was going crazy not knowing what was happening. Worth it just for peace of mind.

Quick question - did you make sure to register with WorkSource? That's required for UI benefits and can delay your claim if you haven't done it yet.

Manny Lark
•Yes, I registered right after filing my claim. Got the confirmation email and everything.

Caesar Grant
•Perfect! That was going to be my next suggestion if you hadn't.

The waiting is the absolute worst part. I checked my account probably 10 times a day when I first filed. Try to stay busy and check maybe once in the morning - the status won't change throughout the day anyway.

•You're right, I need to stop obsessing over it. Easier said than done though!

Just remember that even if approved, there's typically a one-week waiting period before you receive your first payment. So don't expect money immediately even after approval.

•Good to know! I was wondering about the timing of actual payments.

Rita Jacobs
•Right, and you can file for that waiting week but won't get paid for it unless you exhaust all your other benefits later.

When I got my approval letter it came with a debit card in the same envelope. That's how they send payments now unless you specifically request direct deposit.
0 coins
Manny Lark
•Oh interesting! I was wondering how payments work. Is direct deposit better?

Pedro Sawyer
•I prefer direct deposit - no fees and money shows up faster. You can set it up in your account once you're approved.

Pro tip: sign up for text alerts in your SecureAccess Washington account. They'll text you when there are updates to your claim status. Really helpful so you don't have to keep checking manually.

•Great suggestion! I didn't even know that was an option. Going to set that up right now.

Update: I ended up using Claimyr again yesterday to check on a different issue and the agent told me they're currently running about 10-14 days on initial claim reviews. So your timing sounds about right.

•That's actually really helpful to know! Makes me feel better about the timeline.

Make sure you're prepared to start your job search activities as soon as you're approved. You'll need to log your work search efforts for each week you claim benefits.
0 coins
Manny Lark
•Yes, I've been keeping track already just in case. Better to be prepared.

Rita Jacobs
•Smart move! You need 3 job search activities per week in Washington.

Hang in there! I know the waiting is stressful but 10 days really isn't that long in Washington ESD time. You should hear something soon.

One more thing - if you have any issues with your claim or need to make changes, don't wait. Contact them as soon as possible because delays can affect your benefits.

•Good advice! I'll definitely reach out if anything seems off.

•Exactly why I used Claimyr when I had questions - much faster than trying to get through on my own.
