How will I know if my Washington ESD unemployment claim was approved?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any letters or emails yet. For those who have been through this process before, how exactly does Washington ESD notify you when your claim gets approved? Do they send a letter, email, or does it just update in your online account? I'm worried I might miss something important since I really need these benefits to start coming in.

Washington ESD will notify you through multiple channels when your claim is approved. You'll get a determination letter in the mail (usually takes 7-10 business days) that explains your weekly benefit amount and effective date. Your online account will also update to show 'approved' status and you'll be able to file your first weekly claim. Make sure to check both your physical mailbox and your secure messages in the ESD portal.

•Thanks! Should I be checking my online account daily or just wait for the letter?

•I'd check online every few days since that usually updates first. The letter is your official documentation but the online system gives you faster notification.

mine took almost 3 weeks to get approved, dont panic if it takes longer than expected. the letter came first then my online account updated the next day

•Did you have any complications with your claim or was it just the normal processing time?

•no complications, just seemed like they were really backed up. this was back in march though so maybe its faster now

The approval process can definitely be nerve-wracking! When I was trying to get updates on my claim status, I kept calling the Washington ESD phone line but could never get through. That's actually when I discovered Claimyr - it's a service that helps you get connected to ESD agents without waiting on hold for hours. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me from the frustration of busy signals and dropped calls.

•Is that service legit? I've been hesitant to use third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legitimate - they just handle the calling part for you so you don't have to sit on hold. You still talk directly to the ESD agent once connected.

You'll know your claim is approved when you can successfully file your first weekly claim. That's really the definitive sign - if the system lets you complete a weekly claim filing, your initial application was approved. The determination letter will have all the details about your benefit amount and duration.

•This is helpful - I was wondering if I needed to wait for paperwork before filing weekly claims.

•Nope, once you can access the weekly claim filing in your account, you're good to go. Just make sure to file every week to avoid any payment delays.

UGH the waiting is the worst part!! I'm in the same boat - filed 8 days ago and nothing yet. Why does Washington ESD take so long to process these claims? People need money NOW not in 3 weeks!

•I feel you! The system is definitely not designed for people who need quick help.

•I know it's frustrating but they do have to verify employment history and wages with your previous employers. That takes time unfortunately.

Check your spam folder too! My approval email ended up there and I almost missed it. The subject line was something like 'Unemployment Insurance Claim Determination' from Washington State ESD.

•Good tip! I'll make sure to check spam. Did the email come before or after the letter?

•Email came about 2 days before the physical letter arrived. Saved me some anxiety!

also make sure your address is correct in your profile because if the letter gets returned to sender it can delay everything even more

•How do I double-check my address in the system?

•log into your esd account and go to personal information section, you can update it there if needed

One thing to watch for - if your claim gets denied instead of approved, you'll get a different type of letter explaining the reasons. Don't panic if that happens because you have appeal rights. But based on your description, sounds like a straightforward case that should go through fine.

•What are the most common reasons claims get denied? Just curious.

•Usually things like insufficient work history, being fired for misconduct, or not being available for work. Most people who file have valid claims though.

When I was waiting for my approval, I used Claimyr to actually call ESD and check on the status. The agent was able to tell me exactly where my claim was in the process and that it would be approved within a few days. Much better than just wondering and waiting! The peace of mind was worth it.

•That's a good idea - did they charge you to make the call?

•They have different options but it was pretty reasonable for not having to waste hours trying to get through myself.

Just wanted to add that you should also set up direct deposit in your account if you haven't already. Once approved, it's much faster than waiting for paper checks. You can do this even before approval.

Chloe Robinson
•Good thinking - I'll set that up today. Thanks for the reminder!

•Yes definitely do direct deposit! Paper checks can take an extra week to arrive.

I've been through this process twice now and both times the approval letter came exactly 14 days after I filed. Washington ESD seems pretty consistent with their timing once you know what to expect.

make sure you keep filing weekly claims even if you havent gotten approval yet!!! i made the mistake of waiting and then had to go back and file for all the weeks i missed

•Wait, I can file weekly claims before getting approved? The system will let me do that?

Diego Chavez
•Actually you typically can't file weekly claims until after approval. But you should file for the week you become unemployed even if approval is still pending.

The determination letter will also tell you if you have any job search requirements. In Washington you need to do job search activities each week you claim benefits, so make sure to read that section carefully.

•How many job searches do you need to do per week in Washington?

Andre Moreau
•I believe it's 3 job search activities per week, but the letter will spell out the exact requirements for your situation.

Pro tip: when you do get approved, screenshot or print out that first determination letter! You'll need to reference your weekly benefit amount and claim details frequently.

I just got my approval letter yesterday after 12 days of waiting. It was such a relief! The letter is pretty detailed - tells you your weekly amount, how long benefits last, and what you need to do each week. Hang in there, it's coming!

Chloe Robinson
•Congrats! That gives me hope that mine should be coming soon too.

•Yeah I think you're right in that timeframe. The waiting is definitely the hardest part.

If you're really anxious about the status, sometimes Claimyr can help you get through to ESD to check on things. I used them when I was worried my claim was stuck somewhere. The ESD agent was able to confirm everything was processing normally and gave me a realistic timeline. Sometimes just knowing what's happening helps with the stress.

•I might try that if I don't hear anything by next week. Thanks for the suggestion!

One more thing - make sure you're logging into the correct ESD website. There are some scam sites out there that look official. Always use esd.wa.gov for the real Washington ESD portal.

•Yes, I'm using the official .gov site. Good reminder though since I've seen some sketchy looking unemployment sites.

The whole process is just so stressful when you're already dealing with being unemployed. But once you get that approval letter, it's such a huge weight off your shoulders. You'll get through this!
