How do you know if you are approved for unemployment in Washington?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD's website about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'pending' and I haven't received any letters or emails yet. For those who have been through this process - how exactly do you find out if your claim got approved? Do they send something in the mail, email you, or do you just check your account online? I'm worried I might miss something important since I really need these benefits to start coming through.

Washington ESD will send you a determination letter in the mail within 2-3 weeks usually. You'll also get an email notification when your claim status changes in your SecureAccess Washington account. The letter will tell you your weekly benefit amount and when you can start filing weekly claims.

•Thanks! Should I be checking my account daily or is once a week enough?

•I'd check every few days just to stay on top of it. Sometimes they need additional info and you want to respond quickly.

Been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing!! This is ridiculous, I can't even get through on the phone to ask what's taking so long. Anyone else dealing with these crazy delays?

•Same here, filed almost a month ago and radio silence. The wait times to speak to someone are insane.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that before, is it legit? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it's real, they basically help you get connected to an actual person at Washington ESD instead of getting stuck in phone tree hell.

Check your online account first thing every morning. That's where you'll see status changes before you get any mail. Look for 'Approved' or 'Weekly Claim Available' - that means you're good to go. If it says 'Under Review' or 'Adjudication' that means they need more time to decide.

•What does adjudication mean exactly? Is that bad?

Malik Thomas
•Adjudication just means they're reviewing your case more carefully, usually because of something in your work history or how you became unemployed. It can take 4-6 weeks unfortunately.

•Mine was in adjudication for 7 weeks! Thought I'd never see a penny.

You'll know you're approved when you can file your first weekly claim. Until then, just keep checking your account. The waiting is the worst part honestly.

•How do you file weekly claims? Is there a separate form?

•Once approved, you'll see a 'File Weekly Claim' link in your account. You have to do it every week to keep getting paid.

I got my determination letter before I saw anything change online. Washington ESD's website isn't always updated right away. The letter will have all the details including your weekly benefit amount and effective date.

•Good to know, I'll watch for both then. Thanks!

•Same experience here - got the letter 2 days before my online account updated.

If you don't hear anything after 3 weeks, definitely call them. Sometimes applications get stuck for weird reasons and you need to nudge them along. Don't just wait indefinitely.

•What number should I call? The main line is always busy.

•The claims center number is usually your best bet, but yeah the wait times are brutal. Sometimes I call right when they open at 8am.

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when I had an issue. Worked way better than trying to call myself. They got me connected in like 20 minutes.

Update - finally got my determination letter today! Approved for $487/week. The waiting was killing me but it all worked out. Hang in there everyone!

•Congrats! That gives me hope. How long did it take total from when you filed?

•About 3 and a half weeks from filing to getting the letter. Felt like forever though.

Pro tip: set up text alerts in your account settings so you get notified immediately when your status changes. Saved me from checking obsessively every day.

Oliver Weber
•Didn't know you could do that! Where do you find those settings?

Freya Larsen
•In your profile section, look for notification preferences. You can get texts for status changes, payments, etc.

Just remember that even if you're approved, your first payment might be delayed by a week due to Washington's waiting week requirement. Don't panic if money doesn't show up immediately.

•Waiting week? What's that about?

•It's a one-week period where you file a claim but don't get paid. It's just how the system works, everyone has to do it.

•Yeah that waiting week caught me off guard too. At least you still get the money eventually.

The determination letter is the official word. Everything else is just status updates. Once you have that letter in hand, you know exactly where you stand and what your next steps are.

•Makes sense. I'll keep watching my mailbox then.

•And if you get denied, don't give up! You can appeal the decision. I won my appeal after getting initially denied.

Been through this process twice now. First time took 2 weeks, second time took 5 weeks. There's really no predicting it, but you will eventually hear back. The system works, it's just slow.

•Good to hear from someone with experience. What made the second time take longer?

•Had to go through adjudication because my employer contested the claim. Added extra review time but I still got approved in the end.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD by phone, I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that they really helped me when I was stuck in limbo. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get answers about your claim status.

•How much does something like that cost though?

Emma Wilson
•It's pretty reasonable compared to the stress and time saved. Way better than spending whole days trying to get through on your own.

•Might try that if I don't hear back soon. This waiting is driving me crazy.

Also check your spam folder for emails from Washington ESD! Mine ended up there and I almost missed important notifications about my claim.

Oliver Weber
•Oh wow good point, I should check that too.

•Same thing happened to me. Now I check spam daily during the application process.

The whole process is stressful but try to stay patient. I drove myself crazy checking my account 10 times a day. Once I relaxed and just checked once daily, it was easier to deal with.

•Easier said than done when you need the money! But I'll try to chill out a bit.

•I totally get it, bills don't wait. Just know that checking more often doesn't make it go faster.

Don't forget you can also call your local WorkSource office if you can't reach the main Washington ESD line. They sometimes have more availability and can check on your claim status.

•That's a good backup option, thanks for the tip!

•WorkSource helped me figure out why my claim was delayed. Good suggestion.

Bottom line - you'll get multiple notifications when approved: email, letter, and your online account will update. Hard to miss once it happens. Just gotta wait it out unfortunately.
