How do I know if I got approved for unemployment benefits in Washington?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm not sure how to tell if it was approved. My account on the website shows some information but I can't figure out what it all means. Do they send you an email or letter? I've been checking my account daily but the status just says 'processed' which doesn't really tell me if I'm approved or denied. How long does it usually take to find out and where exactly do I look to see if I got approved?

Check your account under 'Your Claim' section. If approved, you'll see your weekly benefit amount listed and it will show your next filing date. You should also receive a determination letter in the mail within 7-10 business days explaining your eligibility.

•Thanks! I see a dollar amount under benefit amount but no determination letter yet. Does that mean I'm approved?

•Yes, if you see a weekly benefit amount that usually means you're approved. The letter will come with all the details about your claim.

You'll get a monetary determination in the mail that shows your benefit amount and how long your claim lasts. Mine took about 2 weeks to arrive but I could see my benefit amount online before that.

•Good to know! I was worried something was wrong since I hadn't gotten anything in the mail yet.

I had trouble figuring this out too when I first applied. Washington ESD doesn't make it very clear on their website. If you're having trouble reaching them by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me hours of calling.

•How much does that cost? I've been trying to call for days but can never get through.

•It's worth it when you need to talk to someone quickly. Way better than spending all day redialing the same number.

Look for three things in your account: 1) Weekly benefit amount showing a dollar figure 2) Claim balance showing total benefits available 3) Next filing date. If all three are there, you're approved.

•Perfect, I have all three of those! Thank you for the clear explanation.

•This is exactly what I needed to know too. Been checking my account obsessively but wasn't sure what to look for.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing, took me forever to figure out where everything was located

•Right? They really need to redesign that interface. Half the time I can't find what I'm looking for.

Also check your messages in the system - they sometimes send notifications there about your claim status. And make sure you file your first weekly claim on time once you're approved, even if you haven't received the letter yet.

•When should I file my first weekly claim? Is it right away or do I wait?

Darren Brooks
•File as soon as your 'next filing date' appears in your account. Don't wait for the letter if you can see your benefit amount online.

I'm in the same boat! Filed 8 days ago and keep refreshing my account page. At least now I know what to look for instead of just staring at 'processed' status.

•The processed status just means they received your application. The real info is in the claim details section.

One thing that confused me was the difference between being approved and actually getting paid. Even if you're approved you still have to serve a waiting period for your first payment in Washington.

Cynthia Love
•Wait, there's a waiting period? How long is that?

Kara Yoshida
•One week waiting period before you get your first payment. So your second weekly claim is when you'd see money deposited.

The determination letter will have all the important info - your weekly amount, how many weeks you can claim, and your job search requirements. Keep that letter safe!

•yeah definitely keep that letter, you might need it later if any issues come up

If you need to talk to Washington ESD about your claim status and can't get through on the phone, definitely try Claimyr. I used it last month when I had questions about my determination and got connected to an agent in minutes instead of calling all day.

•I might have to try that. Been calling the regular number for three days straight with no luck.

Check under the 'Payment Information' tab too - that's where you'll eventually see your payment history once benefits start coming through.

•Good tip! I see that section but it's empty right now. Probably because I haven't filed any weekly claims yet.

Just remember that even if you're approved, you have to keep filing weekly claims and doing your job search activities. The approval is just the first step.

•How many job contacts do you need per week in Washington? I keep seeing different numbers.

Rosie Harper
•It's 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking events, career fairs, etc. Keep good records in WorkSource.

Sometimes there can be delays if they need to verify your employment history or if there are issues with your separation from your last job. If it's taking longer than expected, that might be why.

•That makes sense. My last employer was kind of disorganized so maybe they're having trouble verifying things.

Pro tip: sign up for direct deposit if you haven't already. Much faster than waiting for checks in the mail.

•Where do you set that up? In your account settings?

•Yes, under payment preferences. You'll need your routing and account numbers.

I was approved but then got a letter saying I had to do a phone interview. Anyone else have that happen? Kinda freaking out about it.

•That's normal if there are questions about why you left your job or other eligibility issues. Just be honest and have your documentation ready.

•If you can't get through for your phone interview, Claimyr can help with that too. Sometimes those interview appointments are hard to connect for.

Make sure you understand all the requirements before you start collecting. There's a lot of rules about reporting work and income that can trip you up later.

•This is so important. I know someone who had to pay back benefits because they didn't report part-time work correctly.

The whole process is stressful but once you figure out the system it gets easier. Just stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements.

Washington ESD really needs to improve their communication. Half the stress comes from not knowing what's happening with your claim.

•totally agree, the uncertainty is the worst part of the whole process

Keep checking both your online account and your mailbox. Some notifications come electronically, others still come as physical mail.

•Will do! I've been mostly just checking online but I'll keep an eye on the mail too.

Good luck with your claim! The waiting and uncertainty is tough but sounds like you're on the right track if you're seeing benefit amounts in your account.
