How do I know if my unemployment claim was approved - Washington ESD status check
I submitted my initial unemployment claim about 10 days ago and I'm not sure how to tell if it got approved or not. I can log into my account on the Washington ESD website but the status just says 'processed' which doesn't really tell me much. I haven't gotten any mail yet either. Should I have received some kind of confirmation by now? I'm worried something went wrong with my application.

When you log into your account, look for a section called 'Claim Summary' or 'Payment Information.' If your claim was approved, you should see your weekly benefit amount listed there. Also check if there's a link to file your first weekly claim - that's usually a good sign it went through.

•I see the claim summary but it just shows $0 for weekly benefit amount. Does that mean I was denied?

•Not necessarily - it might still be processing. Check if there are any pending issues or if it says 'adjudication in progress' anywhere on your account.

You should get a determination letter in the mail within 2-3 weeks that tells you if you're approved and what your weekly benefit amount is. The online account sometimes takes longer to update properly.

•It's been 10 days so I guess I need to wait a bit longer. Thanks for the timeline info.

I had the same confusion when I filed. The Washington ESD system is pretty confusing about claim status. If you're really worried about it, you could try calling them but good luck getting through. I spent hours on hold last month trying to check on my claim status.

•Yeah I tried calling yesterday and got hung up on after being on hold for 45 minutes. So frustrating.

•Actually, I just discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They basically call for you and get you connected. I used it last week and got through in like 20 minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

The system is SO confusing! I filed 3 weeks ago and still don't know what's happening. My account shows 'processed' too but I haven't received any letters. Should I be panicking at this point??

•Don't panic yet. 3 weeks isn't unusual, especially if there are any issues that need to be resolved. Have you checked for any pending adjudication issues in your account?

•How do I check for adjudication issues? I don't see anything obvious in my account.

•Look for a section called 'Pending Issues' or 'Adjudication Status' - it might be under a different tab in your account dashboard.

Ugh the Washington ESD website is terrible. Half the time it doesn't even load properly and when it does the information is confusing. Why can't they just send a simple email saying 'approved' or 'denied'?

•Right?? It's 2025 and they're still using a system that looks like it was built in 1995.

•The whole system needs an overhaul but I doubt that's happening anytime soon.

For what it's worth, when I got approved last year, I got the determination letter in the mail before my online account even updated. So don't rely solely on the website.

•That's good to know. I'll keep checking my mail then.

If your claim gets approved, you should also be able to see when your first weekly claim filing date is. That's usually listed somewhere in your account once everything is processed.

•I don't see any weekly claim filing dates yet. Guess I'm still waiting for approval.

•Yeah, the weekly claim option only shows up after your initial claim is approved.

Just went through this same thing. My claim was approved but it took almost 3 weeks to get the letter. The online account was useless - it never really showed clear status until after I got the paper letter.

•That makes me feel better. I was starting to think something was wrong with my application.

•Yeah don't stress too much. The system is just slow and confusing, but most claims do eventually get processed.

Pro tip: if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, I recently found out about Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Is it expensive? I'm already stressed about money while waiting for my claim to be approved.

•It's pretty reasonable considering how much time it saves you. Check their website at claimyr.com for details.

Same boat here. Filed 2 weeks ago and still no determination letter. The waiting is the worst part!

•Right? I keep checking my mailbox multiple times a day like it's going to magically appear.

When I filed, I got confused because the account showed 'processed' but I wasn't getting any weekly benefit amounts. Turns out I had to wait for the determination letter AND then file my first weekly claim before any money showed up.

Giovanni Gallo
•So the weekly claims don't start automatically once you're approved?
0 coins
Paolo Conti
•Nope, you have to actively file them every week. The system will tell you when your first filing date is once you're approved.

I'm dealing with the same thing. Filed 12 days ago and still nothing. Starting to wonder if I should call them but everyone says it's impossible to get through.

•Don't waste your time calling directly. Use Claimyr instead - they have a system that gets you through to Washington ESD agents without the usual hold time nightmare. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked.

Amina Sow
•Really? How does that work exactly?

•They basically call Washington ESD for you using some kind of automated system and then connect you when they get through to a real person. There's a demo video on their site that explains it better than I can.

The determination letter is definitely the official confirmation. Everything else is just confusing website nonsense until you get that letter in the mail.

•Okay I'll stop obsessing over the website status and just wait for the letter then.

been there! the anxiety while waiting for approval is real. hang in there, most claims do get approved eventually if you meet the basic requirements.

•Thanks, I needed to hear that. I've been spiraling a bit about it.

Just to add to what others have said - if there ARE any issues with your claim, Washington ESD will send you a separate letter asking for additional information. No news is usually good news in that regard.
0 coins
Giovanni Gallo
•That's reassuring. I haven't gotten any requests for additional info so hopefully that's a good sign.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. The 2-3 week timeline is pretty standard for Washington ESD, especially if there are no complications with your work history or reason for separation.

Giovanni Gallo
•I was laid off due to company downsizing so hopefully that's straightforward enough.
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•Yeah, layoffs are usually processed pretty quickly compared to other separation reasons. You should be fine.

For future reference, once you do get approved, make sure to file your weekly claims on time every week. Missing even one week can cause delays in your payments.

Giovanni Gallo
•Good to know. How do I know when to file the weekly claims?
0 coins
Emma Thompson
•The determination letter will tell you your filing schedule. Usually it's the same day every week.

UPDATE: I just got my determination letter today! Approved for $547 per week. The website still shows confusing status but the letter has all the clear information. Hang in there OP, yours should come soon!

•Congrats! That gives me hope. How long did it take from when you filed to getting the letter?

•It was exactly 16 days from when I submitted my initial claim to getting the determination letter.

The Washington ESD system really needs better communication. It shouldn't be this stressful to figure out if your claim was approved or not.

Giovanni Gallo
•Totally agree. A simple status update system would make this so much less anxiety-inducing.
