How do I know if my Washington ESD unemployment was approved?
I submitted my unemployment application through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm not sure how to tell if it was actually approved. I got some automated emails but they don't really say much. My account on the secure portal shows some information but I can't figure out what it all means. Do they send you a letter? An email? How long does it usually take to find out if your claim was approved or denied?

You should check your account on the secure Washington ESD website regularly. Once approved, you'll see your weekly benefit amount listed and you'll be able to file your first weekly claim. They also send a determination letter in the mail, but that can take a while to arrive.

•Thanks! I see some numbers in my account but wasn't sure what they meant. I'll look for that weekly benefit amount.

•The determination letter is super important - it tells you exactly how much you'll get per week and how long your benefits will last. Keep an eye out for it!

Usually takes 2-3 weeks to get fully processed. If there are any issues with your application, it might go into adjudication which can take longer. You'll know if that happens because your account will show 'adjudication in progress' or something similar.

•Oh no, I hope mine doesn't go into adjudication! That sounds scary. What causes that to happen?

Melissa Lin
•Don't worry, it's not always bad. Could be something simple like they need to verify your work history or the reason you left your job. Just means they need more information.

Check your account dashboard - there should be a section that shows your benefit amount and effective dates if you're approved. Also look for any correspondence in your secure messages.

•I see a weekly benefit amount listed but no effective dates. Does that mean I'm approved?

Malik Robinson
•Usually yes, if you see a weekly benefit amount that's a good sign. The effective dates might take a day or two to populate.

You should get a determination letter either by mail or in your online account. Mine took about 2 weeks to show up.

•Haven't gotten anything in the mail yet. Should I be worried it's taking this long?

•Not necessarily, Washington ESD is pretty backed up right now. I'd give it another week before calling.

I had the same confusion when I first applied. Here's what to look for: Log into your Washington ESD account and go to the 'Claim Summary' section. If you're approved, you'll see your weekly benefit amount, your claim balance, and effective dates. You should also receive a monetary determination notice either in your secure inbox or by mail within 10-14 business days.

•Thank you! I found the claim summary and I do see a weekly amount. Still no determination notice though.

•That's normal - the online account updates faster than the mail. If you see the benefit amount, you're likely approved.

I was in the same boat last month - super confusing trying to figure out if I was approved. I kept calling Washington ESD but could never get through. Then someone told me about this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a human at Washington ESD. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. I used it to get through and confirm my approval status in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold.

GalaxyGlider
•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

Freya Andersen
•It's worth it when you need answers fast. Way cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day.

•I've heard of Claimyr too - my coworker used it when his claim got stuck in adjudication. Said it saved him weeks of waiting.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. How much does it cost?

•I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it for me since I was getting nowhere with regular calling. Much better than spending my whole day redialing.

•Hmm, seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to the unemployment office. But I guess if it works...

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing!! i've been trying to figure this out for weeks. why can't they just send a simple email that says yes or no???

Malik Robinson
•I know it's frustrating but they do send determination letters. Check your secure messages online first before waiting for mail.

Check your account every morning! That's when they usually update stuff. Also make sure you're looking at the right section - there's a lot of confusing tabs and pages on that website.

Just a heads up - even if you're approved, your first payment might be delayed if there are any issues with your job separation. I was approved but didn't get paid for 3 weeks because they had to verify why I left my last job.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•Oh no, how did you find out there was an issue? I left my job voluntarily but it was because of a medical condition.

Chloe Harris
•They sent me a fact-finding questionnaire. If you left for medical reasons you should be fine, just make sure you have documentation if they ask.

The system is so backed up right now, everything takes forever. I waited almost a month to hear back about my claim. Don't panic if it takes longer than they say it will.

Sunny Wang
•A whole month?! That's terrifying. How did you survive financially during that time?

•It was rough, not gonna lie. Had to borrow money from family. But they did approve it eventually and I got all the back pay.

Look for an email with the subject line about your claim determination. That's usually the first official notice you'll get. Then you can log into your account and see all the details.

For future reference, here are the key places to check your approval status: 1) Claim Summary page shows your weekly benefit amount and claim balance, 2) Correspondence section for your monetary determination letter, 3) Payment History to see if any payments have been processed. If you see a weekly benefit amount, you're almost certainly approved.

I'm dealing with this same issue right now. Applied 2 weeks ago, see a benefit amount online, but no determination letter yet. Starting to panic that something went wrong.

Once you're approved, you'll need to file weekly claims to actually get paid. Don't forget to do that! The first one is usually available the Sunday after your claim gets approved.
0 coins
Sunny Wang
•How do I file weekly claims? Is it on the same website?
0 coins
Rudy Cenizo
•Yes, same website. There will be a section for weekly claims once your account is fully set up. You have to do it every week to keep getting benefits.

•And don't be late with those weekly claims! They're pretty strict about the deadlines.

If you're really worried, you can try calling Washington ESD directly. Fair warning though - it's nearly impossible to get through during normal hours. I must have called 200 times before giving up.

Sunny Wang
•200 times?! That's insane. There has to be a better way.

•Actually, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier might be worth trying if you really need to talk to someone. I used it when I had an adjudication issue and it actually got me through to an agent.

Pro tip: Set up text alerts in your Washington ESD account. They'll send you notifications when important documents are available or when payments are processed. Saved me from constantly checking the website.

GalaxyGlider
•How do you set that up? I don't see that option anywhere.

Sean Flanagan
•It's under Account Settings, then Notification Preferences. Super easy to set up.

Make sure you keep filing weekly claims even if you're not sure about your approval status. Better to be safe than sorry. You can always check with them later if there are any issues.

•Wait, can I file weekly claims before I know if I'm approved? I don't want to mess anything up.

•You might not be able to file until you're approved. Check your account - if the weekly claim option is there, you should be good to go.

The whole process is so confusing and stressful. I wish they would just send a clear email that says 'APPROVED' or 'DENIED' instead of making us guess from all these different screens and codes.

The Washington ESD system is such a mess. I've been approved for 2 months and I STILL haven't received my determination letter in the mail. Thank god for the online account or I'd have no clue what's going on.

Malik Robinson
•That's really unusual. You might want to call and ask them to resend it, or check if your address is correct in the system.

Speaking of getting through on the phone - that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier is a lifesaver for this exact situation. Instead of spending your whole day redialing Washington ESD, they handle the calling for you and patch you through when they reach someone. Worth every penny when you need quick answers about your claim status.

•Is that legitimate? Sounds like it could be a scam.

Another thing to watch for - make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval confirmation. I made the mistake of not filing for 2 weeks thinking I wasn't approved yet, and it messed up my payment schedule.

I never got a determination letter either and I've been collecting for months. As long as you're getting paid and can see your benefit info online, I wouldn't worry about it.

Quick question - is there a difference between being approved and being eligible? I see both terms used on the website and I'm not sure if they mean the same thing.
0 coins
Malik Robinson
•Good question. Eligible means you meet the basic requirements to file. Approved means your claim has been processed and you can receive benefits. You can be eligible but still have your claim denied for other reasons.
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•Ah that makes sense. So I want to see that I'm both eligible AND approved. Thanks for clarifying!

The determination letter will also tell you important stuff like how long your benefits last and what your job search requirements are. Don't ignore it when it comes - even if you already know you're approved from checking online.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•What kind of job search requirements? I haven't seen anything about that yet.
0 coins

•Usually you have to apply for a certain number of jobs each week and keep a log. The exact requirements depend on your situation and will be in your determination letter.

For what it's worth, Washington ESD has gotten a lot better about updating their online system quickly. A few years ago you had to wait for everything by mail. Now most of the important info shows up online within days.

Bottom line for OP - if you see a weekly benefit amount in your claim summary, you're almost certainly approved. The determination letter is just the official paperwork catching up. Keep filing your weekly claims and the money should start showing up soon.
