How do I know if I'm approved for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm not sure what to look for to know if I got approved. My account just shows some basic info but nothing that clearly says approved or denied. I've been doing the weekly claims like it told me to but I haven't gotten any money yet. Should I have received some kind of approval letter by now? What am I supposed to be looking for in my account to know my status?

Check your account under 'Claim Status' - it should show either 'Valid' or 'Disqualified'. If it says Valid, you're approved. Also look for any correspondence in your eServices account inbox.

•I see 'Claim Status: Valid' but still no payments. Is that normal?

•Yes, first payment usually takes 2-3 weeks after approval. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time.

You should get a determination letter either by mail or in your online account. Mine took about 2 weeks to show up.

•I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet. Should I be worried?

•Not necessarily. Check your correspondence section online first - they send most things electronically now.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an agent quickly. They have a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Saved me hours of calling.

•How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call for days.

•They basically handle the calling process for you and connect you when an agent becomes available. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

•Sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?

Freya Christensen
•No catch, just a service fee. But honestly worth it if you need to talk to someone quickly about your claim status.

Look for your weekly benefit amount listed somewhere in your account. If there's a dollar amount showing, you're probably approved. Mine showed $420/week when I got approved.

•I see $385/week listed. Does that mean I'm good to go?

Chloe Robinson
•Yep! That's your weekly benefit amount. You should start seeing deposits once you complete a few weekly claims.

The system is so confusing honestly. I was approved but it took forever to figure it out because they don't make it obvious at all.

•Right? Why can't they just have a big green checkmark that says APPROVED or something?

•Because Washington ESD makes everything unnecessarily complicated. Same reason their phone system hangs up on you constantly.

Also make sure you're meeting the job search requirements. Even if you're approved, you need to log job contacts or your payments will stop.

Isabella Costa
•How many job contacts do I need to log each week?
0 coins
StarSurfer
•Usually 3 per week, but check your individual requirements in your account. Some people have different numbers based on their situation.

•Thanks, I'll double check that section.

Been waiting 3 weeks for my determination letter. This whole system is broken.

•Same here. It's ridiculous how long everything takes.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Got through to an agent in like 20 minutes and they explained my whole claim status over the phone.

Pro tip: if your claim shows 'under review' or 'pending adjudication' that means they need more info from you or your employer. Not approved yet.

Isabella Costa
•Mine doesn't say any of that, just shows the Valid status and benefit amount.

•Then you're good! Just keep filing weekly and the money should start coming.

Check if there's a 'waiting week' notice too. Sometimes you're approved but have to serve a waiting week before payments start.

Isabella Costa
•What's a waiting week?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
•It's like a penalty week where you don't get paid even though you're approved. Usually only applies in certain situations.

StarSurfer
•Washington eliminated the waiting week a few years ago for most regular unemployment claims.

I got a text message when mine was approved. Did you sign up for text notifications?

Isabella Costa
•I don't think so. How do I set that up?

•Should be in your account settings somewhere. Makes it way easier to track updates.

The whole Washington ESD system is a joke. Half the time you can't even log in to check your status.

•Tell me about it. Website crashes constantly.

•Try logging in early morning or late evening. Less traffic.

Look for any disqualification notices too. Sometimes you think you're approved but there's actually an issue that needs to be resolved.

Isabella Costa
•Where would I find those?
0 coins
Luca Russo
•In your correspondence/inbox section. They'll send notices there about any problems with your claim.

If you quit your job or got fired, there might be additional review needed even if your initial claim looks approved.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that's straightforward.

•Layoffs are usually pretty simple. You should be fine if that's the case.

Seriously though, if you're still confused about your status after checking all this stuff, just call them. Or use that Claimyr service I mentioned - they'll get you through to someone who can explain everything clearly.

•How much does Claimyr cost?

•Check their website at claimyr.com for current pricing. Worth it if you value your time and sanity.

Also make sure your direct deposit info is set up correctly. Even if you're approved, you won't get paid if the bank info is wrong.

Isabella Costa
•Good point, I should double check that.

•Yeah, I know someone who waited weeks for payment and it turned out their routing number was wrong.

The determination letter will have all the details - benefit amount, how long benefits last, any special conditions. That's really what you need to look for.

Isabella Costa
•Still haven't gotten that letter. Should I be concerned?

•If it's been more than 2-3 weeks and you don't see it online, definitely call them.

Check your spam folder too! My approval letter went to spam for some reason.

Bottom line: Valid claim status + weekly benefit amount showing = you're approved. Everything else is just details.

Isabella Costa
•That's helpful, thanks. I think I'm overthinking this.

•Most people do! The system makes it way more confusing than it needs to be.

Just went through this myself last month. Took about 2.5 weeks from filing to first payment hitting my account. Hang in there!

•That gives me hope. I'm at about the 1.5 week mark now.

•You're right on track then. Should see something soon.

If all else fails and you can't figure it out from the website, that Claimyr thing really does work. My sister used it when she couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD and got her questions answered same day.

•I might have to try that if I don't see a payment by next week.

•The video demo on their site shows exactly how it works if you want to see before trying it.

Isabella, based on what you've described, it sounds like you're approved! The key indicators are: 1) Your claim status shows "Valid" 2) You can see your weekly benefit amount ($385) 3) You're able to file weekly claims without issues. The fact that you haven't received payment yet is totally normal - first payments typically take 2-3 weeks after approval. Since you filed 10 days ago and can see your benefit amount, you should expect your first payment within the next week or so. Just make sure to keep filing your weekly claims on time and check that your direct deposit info is correct. The Washington ESD system definitely doesn't make it obvious when you're approved, but you've got all the right signs!

•This is really reassuring, thank you! I was getting worried that something was wrong since I hadn't heard anything definitive. It's good to know that having the "Valid" status and benefit amount visible means I'm actually approved. I'll keep filing weekly and wait for that first payment. Appreciate everyone's help in this thread!
