How do I know if I got accepted for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm not sure what to look for to know if I've been approved. My claim shows as 'under review' when I log into my account but there's no clear status like 'approved' or 'denied'. I've been filing my weekly claims just in case but haven't received any payments yet. What signs should I be watching for to know if my claim got accepted? Do they send an email or letter when it's approved?

You'll get a monetary determination letter in the mail and also in your eServices account. That's the official notice that tells you your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you qualify for. Usually takes 1-2 weeks after filing.

•Thanks! I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet but I'll keep checking my eServices account. Should I be worried if it's been 10 days?

•10 days is still normal processing time, especially if they need to verify your wages with your employer. Don't worry yet.

Check your 'Notices and Letters' section in your Washington ESD account online. That's where they post the monetary determination first before mailing it. Also look for any 'fact finding' questionnaires - if they send you one of those, it means they need more info before deciding.

•I see one questionnaire about why I left my job - is that what you mean? I filled it out last week.

Mateo Hernandez
•Yes exactly! That's part of the eligibility determination process. Once they review your answers, they'll make a decision on your claim.

•Those fact finding questionnaires are super important. Make sure you answered everything honestly and completely or it could delay your claim even more.

I was in a similar situation last month and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check my status. The phone lines are always busy. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to an actual ESD agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and I got my questions answered the same day.

•That sounds too good to be true - does it actually work? I've been trying to call for days with no luck.

Ethan Taylor
•Yeah I was skeptical too but it really does work. They handle all the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

•Never heard of this before but anything is better than sitting on hold for hours. Might give it a try if my claim doesn't get resolved soon.

The key things to watch for: 1) Monetary determination letter with your benefit amount, 2) No disqualification notices, 3) Your claim status changes from 'under review' to 'active'. If you see any red flags like 'adjudication in progress' that usually means there's an issue they're investigating.

•What kind of issues cause adjudication? Should I be worried if I see that?
0 coins
Aisha Khan
•Common reasons are questions about why you left your job, availability for work, or wage discrepancies. Not necessarily bad but it does mean longer wait times.

•Adjudication can take WEEKS. I've been waiting 3 weeks now with no updates. This system is broken.

make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you havent been approved yet!! if you dont file them you lose those weeks forever

•Good point - I have been filing them. They show as 'filed' but no payments yet. That's normal right?

AstroAdventurer
•yeah totally normal. once you get approved they'll pay you retroactively for all the weeks you filed

Also check if you need to complete any job search requirements. Even if your claim gets approved, you might need to register with WorkSource or start logging job searches depending on your situation.

•I haven't gotten any instructions about job searching yet. When do those requirements usually kick in?
0 coins
NebulaNova
•Usually after your first payment, but check your determination letter when you get it. It'll spell out all the requirements.

•The job search requirements are in your handbook too. You should have gotten that when you first applied.

The whole system is a mess right now. I've been waiting 3 weeks just to hear ANYTHING about my claim status. No letters, no emails, nothing. And good luck getting through on the phone - I've called 200+ times this week alone.

•Wow that's frustrating! Have you tried going through your state representative or anything like that?

Carmen Lopez
•I contacted my state rep but haven't heard back yet. Might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Definitely worth trying Claimyr if you're that stuck. I used it when I was in a similar boat and it really helped cut through the phone wait times.

Don't panic if it takes a while. I thought my claim was denied because I didn't hear anything for 2 weeks, but then I got the determination letter and everything was fine. The processing times are just really slow right now.

Nia Jackson
•That's reassuring to hear. I was starting to think something went wrong with my application.

•Yeah I went through the same anxiety. As long as you're not getting disqualification notices, you're probably fine.

Quick question - did you quit your job or get laid off? If you quit, there might be additional delays while they determine if you had good cause.
0 coins
Nia Jackson
•I got laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that makes it more straightforward.
0 coins
Andre Dupont
•Yeah layoffs are usually processed faster than voluntary quits. You should be fine.

The Washington ESD website has a section that explains all the different claim statuses. Might be worth checking that out while you wait. It helped me understand what 'under review' actually means.

Nia Jackson
•I'll look for that section. The website is pretty confusing to navigate though.

Zoe Papanikolaou
•Yeah the website isn't the most user-friendly. Try searching for 'claim status' or look in the FAQ section.

I'm in the same boat - filed 8 days ago and still waiting. At least I'm not the only one! This thread is making me feel less anxious about it.

One more thing - make sure your contact information is up to date in your account. Sometimes they try to reach people and can't get through, which delays everything.

•Good tip! I just double-checked and everything looks correct.

The monetary determination is really the key document. It will show your weekly benefit amount (WBA) and the total amount you can collect. Keep filing those weekly claims in the meantime!

•Will do! Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone. I feel much better about the situation now.

Just got my determination letter today after 12 days of waiting. Hang in there - it'll come! And yes, definitely keep filing those weekly claims like everyone said.

•Congrats! That gives me hope. Did you get any notification when it was posted to your account?

•I got an email saying I had a new message in my eServices account, then I logged in and saw the determination letter there.

Whatever you do, don't miss any of your weekly claim deadlines while you're waiting. I made that mistake and lost 2 weeks of benefits that I couldn't get back.

Nia Jackson
•Oh no! Good warning. I've been setting calendar reminders to make sure I don't forget.

•Smart! The deadlines are strict so those reminders are a good idea.

I used Claimyr too when I couldn't get through to ESD. It's legit and saved me so much time. Got connected to an agent within hours instead of days of calling.

•That's the second recommendation for Claimyr. Definitely keeping that in mind if I need to call about my claim.

The waiting is the worst part! But once you get that determination letter, you'll know exactly where you stand. Sounds like you're doing everything right.

Check your bank account too - sometimes the payment shows up before you get the official letter. Happened to me last year.
0 coins
Nia Jackson
•Really? I'll keep an eye on that. I have direct deposit set up so hopefully that speeds things up.

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•Direct deposit definitely helps. Usually payments show up within 1-2 business days once they're processed.

The key is patience unfortunately. I know it's stressful waiting but 10 days is still within normal processing time, especially if they're verifying wages with your employer.

Nia Jackson
•You're right, I need to be more patient. This thread has been super helpful in understanding what's normal vs. what's a red flag.

Make sure you're checking both email and your eServices account regularly. They usually notify you multiple ways when there's an update to your claim.
