How to know if you got approved for unemployment - Washington ESD status check

I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm not sure how to tell if it was actually approved or not. I can log into my account but it just shows 'claim pending' and I haven't received any official letter or email yet. Do they send you something in the mail? Is there a way to check online? I'm supposed to file my first weekly claim this Sunday but I don't want to mess anything up if my initial claim isn't even approved yet. Has anyone been through this process recently?

You should get a determination letter in the mail within 1-2 weeks of filing your initial claim. It will clearly state whether you're approved or denied. You can also check your online account - if you see a monetary determination showing your weekly benefit amount, that means you're approved.

Thanks! I don't see any monetary determination yet, just the pending status. Guess I need to wait a bit longer.

Same here, filed 8 days ago and still waiting for that determination letter. Getting anxious about bills piling up.

If your claim is approved, you'll see several things: 1) A monetary determination showing your weekly benefit amount 2) A determination letter explaining your eligibility 3) The ability to file weekly claims. Until you get that monetary determination, don't file weekly claims - it could cause issues with your account.

This is super helpful! I was about to file my weekly claim this weekend but I'll wait until I see that monetary determination first.

Good advice. I made the mistake of filing weekly claims before getting approved and it delayed everything by another 3 weeks.

I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to check my status. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Got my questions answered in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours trying to call.

Interesting, never heard of that before. Did it actually work for you?

I've heard mixed things about third-party services. Isn't it better to just keep trying the regular phone number?

Trust me, I tried calling Washington ESD directly for weeks. This was way easier and I got actual answers about my claim status.

ugh the waiting is the worst part!! I filed 2 weeks ago and STILL haven't heard anything. How are we supposed to pay rent while waiting for them to make up their minds???

I know it's frustrating but the system is just overwhelmed. Hang in there, most claims do get processed eventually.

eventually isn't paying my bills though :

Check your online account dashboard - if you see a section for 'Weekly Claim Filing' that's usually a good sign your initial claim was approved. Also look for any correspondence in your secure messages.

I do see the weekly claim filing section but it won't let me actually file anything yet. Does that mean I'm approved?

0 coins

Luca Russo

•

Not necessarily - that section appears for everyone but you can't actually file until your monetary determination is complete.

My cousin works at Washington ESD and she told me they're running about 10-14 days behind on processing initial claims right now. So if you filed 10 days ago you're probably close to getting your determination.

That's reassuring to hear! I was starting to worry something went wrong with my application.

10-14 days? Mine took 3 weeks and I filed in perfect condition with all documents.

Don't panic if it takes longer than expected. I thought my claim was denied because it took so long but turns out they were just backed up. Got my approval letter on day 16.

Did you get any notifications before the letter arrived or did it just show up?

0 coins

The letter just showed up in my mailbox one day. But my online account updated the same day with the monetary determination.

Make sure you're checking both your physical mail AND your online secure messages. Sometimes they send stuff electronically first.

Good point, I've been mostly checking my email but not the secure messages in my account.

I remember being so stressed about this same thing! The key indicator is when you log in and see your Weekly Benefit Amount listed somewhere on the main page. That's when you know you're approved and can start filing weekly claims.

That makes sense. I'll keep checking for that weekly benefit amount to show up.

Yes exactly! Mine showed like $289/week when I got approved. Made it real clear I was good to go.

If you're really worried about it, you can try calling Washington ESD directly. Fair warning though - expect to be on hold for hours or get disconnected. I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it was honestly worth it just to get peace of mind about my claim status.

Yeah I've tried calling a few times but never got through. Might have to look into that service.

Same experience here. Regular phone lines are basically useless. Third-party services are becoming necessary just to get basic information.

Here's what happened with mine: Filed on a Tuesday, got a confirmation email same day, then nothing for 12 days. On day 13 my online account suddenly showed my weekly benefit amount and I got the determination letter 2 days later. So the online account updates before the mail.

This timeline is really helpful! Sounds like I'm right in that waiting period where things should update soon.

That's almost exactly what happened to me too. Day 12-13 seems to be when things start moving.

One thing to watch out for - if your claim goes into 'adjudication' status that means they need to review something and it will take longer. Hopefully yours stays as just 'pending' and processes normally.

What would cause it to go into adjudication? I'm pretty sure I filled everything out correctly.

0 coins

Could be anything - they might want to verify your employment dates or reason for separation. Don't stress about it unless it actually happens.

The determination letter is the official word. Everything else is just status updates. When that letter arrives saying you're approved and showing your benefit amount, THEN you know for sure you can start filing weekly claims.

Got it. I'll wait for that official letter before doing anything else. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

Smart move. Better to wait a few extra days than mess up your claim by filing too early.

Just wanted to add - when you do get approved, make sure to file your weekly claims on time every week. Missing even one week can cause problems later. Set a reminder on your phone or something.

Sean Flanagan

•

Will do! What day of the week are you supposed to file?

0 coins

Sofia Torres

•

You can file Sunday through Saturday for the previous week. I always do mine on Sunday morning to get it out of the way.

I was approved but never got the letter in the mail - it got lost somehow. But my online account showed everything clearly so I was able to start filing weekly claims without the physical letter. The online info is what really matters.

Good to know the online account is the main source of truth. I'll keep monitoring that closely.
