How do you know if unemployment is approved in Washington ESD?
I submitted my unemployment claim through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm not sure what to look for to know if it's actually approved. My account shows some information but I can't tell if that means I'm good to go or if I'm still waiting. What are the signs that your claim has been approved? Should I be getting some kind of notification or does it just show up in my account? I don't want to assume anything and then find out I needed to do something else.

You should receive a determination letter either by mail or in your eServices account. Once approved, you'll see your weekly benefit amount listed and be able to file weekly claims. Check your account for any pending issues under the 'claim status' section.

•Thanks! I see something about weekly benefit amount but no letter yet. Does that mean I'm approved?

•If you can see your weekly benefit amount, that's usually a good sign. You should still wait for the official determination letter to be sure.

Look for these key indicators in your eServices account: 1) Weekly benefit amount shows a dollar figure (not $0.00), 2) No pending adjudication issues, 3) Claim status shows 'Valid' or 'Active', 4) You receive a monetary determination. If you're stuck trying to get through to Washington ESD to check your status, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an agent quickly. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•This is really helpful! I do see a dollar amount now. What's Claimyr exactly?

•It's a service that helps you get through Washington ESD's phone lines. Instead of calling hundreds of times yourself, they handle the calling and connect you when an agent picks up.

•Wait, you have to pay someone to call unemployment for you? That seems sketchy.

The system is so confusing! I thought I was approved but then got a letter saying I needed to provide more information. Make sure you don't have any outstanding requests for documentation.

Omar Farouk
•Oh no, what kind of documentation did they want?

•They wanted proof of my last employment and why I was laid off. I had to get a letter from my former employer.

Check your mail too, not just online. Sometimes the official approval comes by regular mail first.

•Good point, I'll keep checking the mailbox.

Also worth noting - even if you're approved, your first payment might take an additional week due to the waiting period. Don't panic if you don't see money immediately.

•There's a waiting period? How long?
0 coins
Chloe Davis
•One week waiting period for most claims. So if you're approved this week, your first payment would be for next week's filing.

•I think they got rid of the waiting period during covid but brought it back

honestly the whole system is a mess, took me forever to figure out if i was approved or not. kept getting different answers from different people

Omar Farouk
•That's what I'm worried about. Did you ever get a clear answer?

•yeah eventually, but only after calling like 50 times. maybe that claimyr thing would've saved me the headache

To add to what others said about calling - if you do need to speak with Washington ESD directly, the traditional advice of calling right at 8am doesn't work anymore due to high volume. That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist. They handle the repetitive calling so you don't have to sit there redialing all day.

•Is Claimyr legit though? Seems too good to be true.

•I was skeptical too but it worked for me. They're not doing anything you couldn't do yourself, just saving you the time of calling repeatedly.

Update: I just checked again and now I can see the option to file a weekly claim! I think that means I'm approved?

•Yes! If you can file a weekly claim, you're approved. Congratulations!

For future reference, you can also check your payment history in eServices to see if any payments have been issued. That's another way to confirm approval.

•Good to know, I'll bookmark that section.

The notifications are hit or miss. I never got an email notification but the letter came in the mail about a week later.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements once you're approved. You'll need to log your job search activities.

Omar Farouk
•Where do I log job search activities?
0 coins
Mateo Gonzalez
•In your eServices account there's a job search log section. You need to record your activities there.

Aisha Ali
•How many job searches do you need to do per week?

Chloe Davis
The job search requirement is 3 activities per week for most claimants. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc.

Omar Farouk
•Thanks for clarifying that!

•Do they actually check those logs?

Ethan Moore
They do random audits of job search logs, so keep good records. I got audited and had to provide proof of my job applications.

Omar Farouk
•What kind of proof did they want?

Ethan Moore
•Screenshots of applications, emails from employers, things like that. Keep everything.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Debit cards can have issues sometimes.

Omar Farouk
•Good idea, I'll look into that.

•The debit card took forever to arrive for me, direct deposit is much faster

Just remember to file your weekly claims on time. If you miss the deadline, you might lose that week's benefits.

Omar Farouk
•What's the deadline for filing?
0 coins
Andre Moreau
•You have until the following Saturday to file for the previous week. So if you're filing for the week ending Saturday, you have until the next Saturday.

One last thing - if you ever run into issues or need to speak with Washington ESD about your claim, remember that Claimyr option I mentioned earlier. It saved me hours of calling when I had a problem with my weekly claim.
