How do I know if my unemployment claim was approved - Washington ESD status confusion
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm not sure how to tell if it's been approved or not. My SecureAccess Washington account shows some information but I'm honestly confused about what it all means. There's a section that says 'claim status' but it just shows dates and dollar amounts that don't make much sense to me. I've been filing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to but I haven't received any payments yet. Is there a specific place I should be looking to see if my claim is actually approved? I'm starting to worry something went wrong with my application.

Check your Washington ESD account under the 'Payment History' section. If your claim is approved, you'll see payment amounts listed there even if they haven't been deposited yet. Also look for any correspondence in your account - they usually send a determination letter when your claim is processed.

•I looked there but it's mostly empty except for $0.00 entries. Does that mean it's still processing?

Carmen Reyes
•Those zero entries usually mean your weekly claims are being held pending the initial determination. Keep filing though!

You should get a monetary determination letter in your online account that tells you your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for. That's how you know it's approved. Mine took about 2 weeks to show up.

•I don't see any letters in my account yet. Should I be worried it's taking this long?

•Not necessarily, they're pretty backlogged right now. 10 days isn't too unusual.

I had the same problem trying to figure out my claim status! I couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really made the whole process less stressful.

•How much does something like that cost?

•It was worth it for me just to get actual answers instead of guessing about my claim status. Much better than calling hundreds of times.

Check your account dashboard for the claim status - it should say either 'Active' or show if there are any issues pending. If it says 'Adjudication in Progress' that means they're still reviewing something about your claim.

•It just says 'Filed' under status. Does that mean approved or still processing?
0 coins
Mei Wong
•Filed usually means they received it but haven't finished processing. You should get a determination letter in the mail within 2-3 weeks.

same thing happened to me - took forever to figure out what was going on with my claim status

•How long did it take for you to get confirmation? I'm already stressed about bills piling up.

•like 2.5 weeks before I got the letter saying I was approved. then another week for first payment

The key things to look for: 1) Monetary determination letter showing your weekly benefit amount 2) No disqualification notices 3) Payment history showing actual dollar amounts (not zeros) 4) Claim balance showing total available benefits. If you see all of these, your claim is approved and processing.

•This is super helpful! I only see some of these things so maybe I'm still in the initial review phase.

•Yeah the monetary determination is the big one. Without that letter you're still waiting for approval.

The key indicator is receiving your monetary determination letter from Washington ESD. This official document will clearly state whether your claim is approved and show your weekly benefit amount. Until you receive this letter, your claim is still being processed. The online status can be confusing - 'Filed' means received, 'Active' means approved, and 'Adjudication' means under review for some issue.

•Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll watch for that letter in the mail.

•What if you never get the letter? I've been waiting 3 weeks and nothing in my mailbox

•If you don't receive the determination letter within 3 weeks, you should contact Washington ESD directly to check on your claim status. Sometimes mail gets delayed or lost.

ugh this is so confusing!! I'm in the same boat and have no idea what's happening with my claim. The Washington ESD website is terrible and gives you no real information about where you stand.

Amara Adeyemi
•I know right? Why can't they just have a simple status page that says APPROVED or PENDING or DENIED?

Mei Chen
•The system is outdated but once you know what to look for it's not too bad. The monetary determination really is the key document.

I had the same confusion and ended up using Claimyr to actually get through to someone at Washington ESD. Turns out my claim was approved but there was a small issue with my work history verification that was holding up payments. The rep explained everything clearly and got it sorted out. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not calling Washington ESD over and over. Plus you get actual answers instead of guessing what your claim status means.

•I was skeptical too but it's legit. They just help you get through the phone system faster. Still talk to real Washington ESD agents.

Check if there's an 'adjudication' status anywhere in your account. If there is, that means they need to review something about your claim before approving it. Could be work separation issues, eligibility questions, etc.
0 coins
StarSurfer
•I don't see anything that says adjudication specifically. Is that good or bad?
0 coins
Giovanni Gallo
•That's probably good - means your claim doesn't have any obvious red flags that need special review.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS DELIBERATELY CONFUSING! They don't want you to know if you're approved because then you might actually collect benefits. I swear they make it as hard as possible on purpose!!
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•ok but like, that doesn't help answer the question tho
0 coins
Dylan Wright
•The answer is you basically have to wait for the letter or call them. There's no easy way to know online which is ridiculous in 2025.

The waiting is the worst part! I remember checking my account like 20 times a day waiting for that determination letter to show up. Just keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't been approved yet.

•Yeah I've been checking constantly too. Good to know I should keep filing the weekly claims though.

•Definitely keep filing! If you miss weeks while waiting for approval you can lose those benefits permanently.

I was in your exact situation last month. Turns out my claim was approved but I didn't realize it because I was looking in the wrong place. The monetary determination was buried in the correspondence section, not where I expected it.
0 coins
StarSurfer
•Which section exactly? I want to make sure I'm checking everywhere.

•Log into your SecureAccess Washington account, go to unemployment services, then look for 'View Correspondence' or 'Messages'. That's where official letters show up.

Has anyone tried calling them? I know the lines are busy but maybe worth a shot to get a straight answer about claim status.

•I've tried calling probably 50 times over the past two weeks. Either busy signal or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour. It's really frustrating.

Also look for any correspondence in your online account under 'Messages' or 'Documents'. Sometimes they post updates there before mailing the physical letter.

•yeah mine showed up in messages like 3 days before I got the letter in mail

What about the payment history section? Mine shows $0 for all weeks even though I've been filing. Does that mean I'm not approved?
0 coins

•Zero payments usually means either your claim isn't approved yet or there's an issue preventing payment. Check if there are any 'alerts' or 'to-do' items in your account.

Amara Eze
•No alerts that I can see. Just the weekly claims showing as 'submitted' but no money.

Make sure you're checking both your Washington ESD account AND your SecureAccess Washington login. Sometimes information shows up in one place before the other. I learned this the hard way.

•Wait, those are different accounts? I thought SecureAccess Washington WAS the Washington ESD account.

•SecureAccess Washington is the login portal, but once you're logged in you access Washington ESD services through it. Just make sure you're going all the way into the unemployment section.

Sometimes the determination letter gets sent to an old address if you moved recently. Make sure Washington ESD has your current mailing address updated in your profile.

•Yes! This happened to my neighbor - all her mail was going to her old apartment for weeks

The system will also send you a debit card in the mail once your claim is approved, even before your first payment. So if you get a ReliaCard in the mail that's a good sign your claim went through.
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
•Oh that's good to know! I haven't gotten any mail yet so probably still waiting for approval.

•Yeah the debit card usually comes pretty quickly after approval. Keep an eye on your mailbox.

Another thing to check - if you quit your job or were fired, your claim might be under adjudication while they verify the reason for separation with your employer. That can add several weeks to the approval process.

Jamal Anderson
•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that's straightforward. Got all the paperwork from HR.

Wait, am I supposed to keep filing weekly claims even if I don't know if I'm approved yet? I've been waiting to file until I get confirmation.
0 coins
Liam McGuire
•Yes, you should continue filing weekly claims while your initial claim is being processed. If you don't file weekly, you could lose benefits for those weeks even if your claim gets approved.
0 coins
Paolo Longo
•Oh no! I've missed like 2 weeks of filings. Can I go back and file for those weeks?

•You might be able to file for missed weeks, but there could be complications. Contact Washington ESD as soon as possible to explain the situation.

One more thing - make sure you're doing your job search requirements if they apply to your situation. Sometimes claims get held up because people don't realize they need to be actively searching for work.

Another thing to check - make sure you completed your job search registration with WorkSource if that was required. Sometimes claims get held up because people miss that step.

I'm dealing with the same uncertainty right now. Filed 2 weeks ago and still no clear indication if I'm approved. The whole system could really use better communication about where claims stand in the process.
0 coins
Paolo Conti
•Agreed! They should have like a progress bar or something showing where your claim is in the review process.

Quick update process check: Did you get an initial email confirmation when you first submitted your claim? That's usually the first sign everything went through properly on their end.
