How do you know your Washington ESD unemployment is approved?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious waiting to hear back from Washington ESD. I've been checking my account on SecureAccess Washington daily but the status just says 'processing' and I can't tell if that's good or bad. What signs should I be looking for to know if my claim got approved? Do they send an email, letter, or do I just have to keep checking the website? I'm worried I might miss something important or that there's a problem I don't know about.

You'll get a determination letter either by mail or in your online eServices account. Usually takes 2-3 weeks for a decision. The status will change from 'processing' to either 'approved' or it will show if there are any issues. Don't panic yet - 10 days is still pretty normal timing.

•Thanks, that helps. Should I be doing anything while I wait or just sit tight?

•Just keep filing your weekly claims even while it's processing. That way you don't lose any weeks if you get approved.

Check your eServices account under 'Correspondence' - that's where they post official letters. Also look for any 'To Do' items that might need your attention. Sometimes they need additional info before they can approve.

•I don't see any To Do items right now, so hopefully that's a good sign?

•Yeah that's good! Usually means they have everything they need to make a decision.

I had the same anxiety last year. Here's what to watch for: 1) Status changes from processing to active/approved 2) You'll see a monetary determination showing your weekly benefit amount 3) They'll send a determination letter explaining the decision. If approved, you can start getting paid for the weeks you've been filing.

•This is really helpful! About how long after approval did you start seeing payments?

•First payment took about a week after approval, then regular payments came every Tuesday after filing weekly claims.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you actually reach an ESD agent on the phone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made it so much easier than trying to call myself and getting busy signals.

•Is this like a paid service? Seems sketchy to pay someone to make a phone call for you.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They handle the waiting and callbacks so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Worth it when you really need to talk to someone at ESD.

ugh the waiting is the WORST part!! I'm going through the same thing right now and constantly refreshing my account like that's gonna make them decide faster lol

•Right?? I probably check it like 5 times a day even though I know nothing's changed

•Same here! It's like watching a pot of water - never boils when you're staring at it

One thing people don't realize - even if your claim is approved, you might not see payments right away if there are any work search requirements or waiting periods. Make sure you're doing your job searches and logging them properly from day one.

•Wait, I need to be doing job searches already? Even before my claim is approved?

Carmen Reyes
•Yes! You need to be actively searching and keeping a log. Washington ESD can ask for proof of your job search activities for any week you claim benefits.

•This is important - I got dinged for not having proper job search records even though my claim was approved

Another thing to check - make sure your direct deposit info is set up correctly in your account. Nothing worse than getting approved and then having payment delays because of banking issues.

•Good point, I should double-check that. Where do I find the direct deposit settings?

•In your eServices account, go to 'Payment Options' and verify your bank info is correct

I've been through this process twice and honestly the hardest part is just being patient. Washington ESD moves at their own pace and there's not much you can do to speed it up. Just keep filing your weekly claims and wait for that determination letter.

•Yeah patience is definitely not my strong suit right now with bills piling up

•I totally get it. The financial stress while waiting is real. Hang in there though, most claims do get approved eventually.

Watch out for adjudication too - that's when they need to investigate something about your claim. If that happens, it can add several more weeks to the process. Hopefully you won't have to deal with that.

•How would I know if my claim goes into adjudication? Would they tell me?

•Your status would change to show 'adjudication in progress' and they might send you paperwork to fill out

•Adjudication is a nightmare - mine took 6 weeks and they barely communicated what was happening

Pro tip: screenshot everything in your account regularly. I had issues where things disappeared from my account and having screenshots helped when I had to call in.

•That's actually really smart advice. I'll start doing that today.

•Yes! I learned this the hard way. Keep records of everything - claim dates, weekly filings, correspondence, everything.

Also remember that even after approval, you still need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. It's not automatic - you have to certify each week that you're still unemployed and eligible.

•How often do I need to file these weekly claims? Every Sunday?

Ava Rodriguez
•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. Most people do it Sunday or Monday. Don't wait too long or you might miss the filing deadline.

The determination letter will have all the details you need - your weekly benefit amount, how long you can collect, any special conditions, etc. That's really the document that tells you everything about your approved claim.

•Is this letter available online or do they only mail it?

Miguel Ortiz
•Both usually - you'll get a copy in your eServices correspondence and they'll mail a physical copy too

Don't stress too much about the processing time. I know it's easier said than done when you need the money, but Washington ESD is pretty good about eventually getting to everyone's claims. Just make sure you keep filing those weekly claims!

•Thanks for the encouragement. The waiting is definitely the hardest part of this whole process.

•Hang in there! Most people I know got approved within 2-3 weeks. You're probably close to hearing something.

Quick update on that Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - I actually used them again this week to check on a different issue and got through to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling all day myself. Really worth it if you end up needing to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for unemployment

•I'd rather not discuss pricing in the forum, but for me it was worth it to get answers quickly instead of spending days trying to get through on my own

The key thing is not to panic if it takes the full 2-3 weeks or even a bit longer. Washington ESD has been pretty backlogged lately and they're working through claims as fast as they can. Your 10 days is still well within normal processing time.

StarSurfer
•That's reassuring to hear. I was starting to worry that something was wrong since some people seem to hear back faster.

•Every claim is different - some are straightforward and others need more review. Doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with yours.

Make sure you're checking both your regular email and any spam folders for messages from Washington ESD. Sometimes their emails end up in spam and people miss important notifications.

•Good call, I'll check my spam folder now. I've been so focused on checking the website I forgot about email.

Paolo Conti
•Yeah I almost missed an important adjudication notice because it went to spam. Now I check both every day.

Bottom line - if you don't have any 'To Do' items showing up and your status is still processing, you're probably fine. Most claims that are going to have problems show warning signs pretty early in the process.

•That makes me feel a lot better. I haven't seen any red flags so hopefully it's just a matter of waiting a bit longer.

•Exactly. No news is usually good news with Washington ESD claims. Just keep doing what you're doing and wait for that determination letter.
