How to know if you got accepted for unemployment benefits in Washington
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm getting really anxious about whether it was approved or not. I've been checking my account on the website every day but the status just says 'claim under review' and doesn't give me any real information. I tried calling but can never get through to anyone. How am I supposed to know if my claim got accepted? Will they send me something in the mail or email? I really need to know because my last paycheck runs out next week and I'm starting to panic about bills.

You should get a determination letter either by mail or through your online account. Usually takes 1-3 weeks depending on if there are any issues with your claim. Check your secure messages in your Washington ESD account - that's where they post most notifications now.

•I've been checking secure messages but there's nothing there yet. Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

•10 days isn't unusual, especially if they need to verify your employment history or wages. The determination will tell you if you're approved, your weekly benefit amount, and when you can start filing weekly claims.

same thing happened to me, took forever to hear anything back from them. the waiting is the worst part honestly

•How long did it take for you to get an answer?

If you're getting really anxious about the status and can't get through by calling, I'd suggest trying Claimyr. It's a service that helps you actually reach Washington ESD agents on the phone. I used it when my claim was stuck in adjudication and it saved me weeks of trying to call myself. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before, is it legit? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it's real, check out claimyr.com. They basically handle the calling for you so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Worth it when you need answers fast.

•I was skeptical too but honestly anything beats trying to call Washington ESD yourself. Those phone lines are impossible.

The Washington ESD system is so frustrating! I waited almost a month before I heard anything and then they needed more information. Make sure you have all your employment history ready in case they ask for it.

•What kind of information did they need from you?

•They wanted pay stubs from my last job and verification of my last day worked. Had to submit it through the website and then wait another week.

Look for the monetary determination letter - that's what tells you if you're approved and how much your weekly benefit will be. It should show up in your secure messages or get mailed to you. Don't panic yet, 10 days is still within normal processing time.

•What's the difference between that and the regular determination letter?

•The monetary determination shows your wage history and benefit amount. The eligibility determination tells you if you qualify. You need both to be approved.

just keep checking every day, they'll update it eventually. took me 2 weeks but then everything was fine

•That's reassuring, thanks. I guess I just need to be more patient.

Also make sure you're ready to file your first weekly claim as soon as you get approved. You have to do it every week to keep getting benefits, and you can usually file for the week you applied even if it gets approved later.

•Do I need to wait for the approval letter before filing weekly claims?

CosmosCaptain
•You can file once your claim is processed, but you won't get paid until it's approved. The system will let you know when you can start filing.

•This is confusing - I thought you had to wait for everything to be approved first?

If you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, seriously consider using Claimyr. I know I mentioned it before but when you're waiting on benefits you can't afford to waste time trying to get through on your own.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•I'd rather pay a little to actually reach someone than waste days calling for free and getting nowhere. Check their website for current pricing.

•I hope so, I'm just really stressed about money right now.

Washington ESD is notorious for taking forever and then asking for more documentation at the last minute. Make sure you have everything ready - W2s, pay stubs, separation notice from your employer.

•I uploaded everything when I applied. Should I upload it again?

Diego Mendoza
•No don't upload duplicates, that might confuse things. Just wait to see what they ask for.

I went through this same anxiety last year. The not knowing is terrible but in most cases if you qualify for unemployment and filled out everything correctly, you'll get approved. Just takes time for them to process everything.

•That makes me feel a little better. I think I filled everything out right but you never know.

•If there are any issues they'll contact you before denying the claim. No news is usually good news with Washington ESD.

One thing to watch for - if your claim goes into adjudication that can add several more weeks to the process. That happens when they need to investigate something about your separation from work or eligibility.

Ravi Choudhury
•How would I know if it's in adjudication?
0 coins
Anastasia Romanov
•It would show that status on your claim summary page. If you see 'adjudication in progress' that means they're investigating something.

•Mine was in adjudication for 6 weeks! Turned out my employer contested the claim but I eventually won.

honestly the whole system needs to be fixed, it shouldn't take this long to find out if you can get help when you're unemployed

•I totally agree, the stress of not knowing makes everything worse.

If you haven't gotten any determination letters by the 3-week mark, that's when I'd definitely recommend trying to contact them directly. Either through Claimyr like others mentioned or keep trying the phone lines early in the morning.

•Good to know there's a timeline. I'll give it another week before I start really worrying.

Make sure you're checking both your online account AND your physical mailbox. Sometimes they send important stuff by regular mail even if you signed up for electronic delivery.

Last suggestion - if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD directly, Claimyr has helped a lot of people get through when the regular phone lines are jammed. Sometimes talking to an actual person is the only way to get real answers about your claim status.

•I'm definitely going to look into that if I don't hear something soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

The waiting game with unemployment is awful but try not to stress too much. Most people do get approved if they legitimately qualify. Washington ESD is just slow, not necessarily rejecting claims.

•That's really helpful to hear. I needed that reassurance today.

One more tip - once you do get approved, make sure you understand the job search requirements. You'll need to log your job search activities each week when you file your weekly claim. Better to be prepared ahead of time.
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•I haven't even thought about that yet. What kind of job search activities do they want to see?
0 coins
Anastasia Romanov
•Applications, networking contacts, job fairs, interviews - basically anything that shows you're actively looking for work. Keep good records.

Good luck with everything! The first claim is always the most stressful because you don't know what to expect. It gets easier once you know how the system works.
