How do you know if you get unemployment approved in Washington?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD about 2 weeks ago and I'm starting to panic because I have no idea if it's going to be approved or not. The website just shows my claim is 'under review' but doesn't give me any timeline or indication of what's happening. I've never filed for unemployment before so I don't know what to expect. How long does it usually take to find out if your claim gets approved? Will they send me something in the mail or will it just show up online? I'm really stressed about this because I need to know if I should be looking for temporary work or if benefits are coming.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process initial claims. You'll get a determination letter either by mail or through your SecureAccess Washington account. Check your online account daily - that's usually where you'll see updates first. If approved, you'll also get instructions on filing your weekly claims.

•Thanks! Should I be doing anything while I wait or just sit tight?

•Keep looking for work and document your job search activities. Even if your claim is approved, you'll need to show you're actively seeking employment to continue receiving benefits.

•Same here - the phone system is impossible. I've been trying to call for days just to get a status update.

•If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an agent. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling.

You'll know your claim is approved when you can file your first weekly claim. That's the real confirmation. The determination letter will come but being able to file weekly claims means you're in the system and approved.

•How do I know when I can file my first weekly claim? Will they email me or something?

•You'll get instructions in your determination letter and you can also check your online account. Usually you can start filing weekly claims the Sunday after your claim is approved.

Just went through this last month. Here's what happened with my timeline: Filed initial claim on a Tuesday, got determination letter the following Wednesday (so about 8 days). Was approved for $487/week. The letter came in the mail first, then I saw it in my online account the next day. Once approved, I could file my first weekly claim that Sunday.

•That's really helpful to know! Did you have any issues with your claim or was it pretty straightforward?

Yuki Watanabe
•Mine was straightforward - laid off due to company downsizing with proper documentation. If you were fired or quit, it might take longer because they need to investigate.

The determination letter will tell you everything - your weekly benefit amount, how long you can collect, and what you need to do to keep getting benefits. Don't panic if it takes a few weeks, Washington ESD has been backed up lately.

•What if they deny my claim? Can I appeal?
0 coins
Carmen Sanchez
•Yes, you have 30 days from the determination date to file an appeal if you're denied. The letter will include appeal instructions.

•I feel you. Been 3 weeks for me too and I'm starting to stress about bills.

•Seriously try Claimyr if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked to get me through to an agent who could check my claim status.

Here are the typical approval indicators to watch for: 1) You receive a monetary determination letter showing your weekly benefit amount, 2) Your online account shows 'Claim Established' instead of 'Under Review', 3) You can access the weekly claim filing section, 4) You may receive a debit card in the mail for benefit payments.

•This is super helpful! I'll keep checking my account for these signs. How often should I check?

Mateo Gonzalez
•I'd check daily, but don't obsess over it. Updates usually happen during business hours Monday-Friday.

been approved for 6 months now and honestly the hardest part was that initial waiting period not knowing anything. once you're in the system its pretty smooth sailing as long as you file your weekly claims on time

MoonlightSonata
•That's reassuring to hear! How strict are they about filing weekly claims on time?
0 coins
Andre Dupont
•Pretty strict - you have a specific window each week (usually Sunday-Saturday) to file. Miss it and you might lose that week's benefits.

One thing to remember - even if you're approved, your first payment might be delayed by the waiting week. Washington ESD has a one-week unpaid waiting period for most claims.

MoonlightSonata
•Wait, so even if approved I don't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Ethan Campbell
•Correct - the first week you're eligible is your waiting week. You'll file a claim for it but won't receive payment unless you exhaust all other benefits.

The anxiety is real while waiting! I kept refreshing my account every hour until I got my determination letter. For me it was exactly 10 business days from filing to approval.

MoonlightSonata
•10 business days sounds reasonable. I'm at about 14 calendar days now so hopefully soon!

•Hang in there! The waiting is definitely the hardest part but once you get that approval letter it's such a relief.

What if there are issues with your claim? Mine has been stuck in 'adjudication' for over a month and I have no idea what that means or how long it will take.
0 coins
Mateo Gonzalez
•Adjudication means they're investigating something about your claim - could be reason for job separation, wages, or work search requirements. These take longer, sometimes 4-6 weeks.

Aisha Mohammed
•If you're stuck in adjudication, that's exactly when you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Claimyr helped me get through when I had adjudication issues - they can actually explain what's holding up your claim.

Pro tip: sign up for text alerts in your Washington ESD account. They'll text you when there are updates to your claim status. Saved me from constantly checking the website.

•I didn't know they had text alerts! Where do I find that option?

•Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for notification preferences. You can set up alerts for claim updates, payment notifications, etc.

•Awesome news! See, the waiting does eventually end. Now you can start filing your weekly claims.

Remember that approval doesn't mean automatic payments. You still need to file weekly claims every week, complete work search activities, and report any income. Miss any of these requirements and your benefits can be suspended.

MoonlightSonata
•How many work search activities do I need to do each week?
0 coins
Carmen Sanchez
•Currently it's 3 work search activities per week. Keep detailed records of your job search - employer names, dates, positions applied for, etc.

The whole process is so stressful when you're waiting. Just remember that most people do get approved if they were laid off through no fault of their own. Keep your documentation organized and be patient.

•Thanks for the encouragement. The waiting is definitely the hardest part but hearing everyone's experiences helps a lot.

If you get approved, make sure you understand your payment schedule. Benefits are typically paid 1-2 business days after you file your weekly claim, but can take longer for first payments.
0 coins
MoonlightSonata
•Do the payments go to a debit card or direct deposit?
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Washington ESD automatically sends a debit card but you can switch to direct deposit once you receive it. Direct deposit is usually faster.

One more thing - if you're approved, your benefit year lasts 52 weeks from when you filed, not from when you were approved. So even if there's a delay in processing, you don't lose time off your benefit year.
0 coins
MoonlightSonata
•That's good to know! I was worried that the processing delay would eat into my benefit time.
0 coins
Yuki Watanabe
•Nope, your benefit year starts from your initial filing date regardless of processing delays.

Just be prepared that if you have any complications (like working multiple jobs, being self-employed, or having separation issues), the process takes longer. Straightforward layoffs usually get processed faster.
0 coins
MoonlightSonata
•Mine should be straightforward - company layoffs due to budget cuts with proper notice.
0 coins
Liam O'Sullivan
•That sounds like it should process smoothly then. Those are usually the easiest claims for Washington ESD to approve.

Final thought - if you do run into any issues or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, don't waste hours on hold. I mentioned Claimyr earlier and honestly it was a game changer for getting actual help when I needed it. Worth checking out if you hit any roadblocks.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into any issues. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know the option exists.

Hang in there! The waiting period is nerve-wracking but most people who qualify do get approved. Just keep checking your account and watch for that determination letter. You'll know definitively once you receive it.
